First settled in 1716 Millbury was not incorporated until June 11, 1813.  Millbury gets it's name from it's long history as a "mill town".

Originally a part of the North parish of Sutton, residents found traveling from one part of town to the other difficult for town meetings. The residents of North Parish petitioned the Massachusetts General Court to split Sutton into two separate towns.

Around 1753, John Singletary built the S & D spinning mill which is now the oldest continuously operating mill in the United States.
