Mr TRACEY and Ruth WANTLAND Family of Baltimore,

Mrs. Jean Belt found an interesting connection to the Tracey families in Baltimore in the will of John Thomas. The will was dated and proved Jan 1834 in Baltimore County. The will was very difficult to read and the language was poor. In his will, John left the following devisees:

The children of Ruth Wantland and Mr Tracey can apparently for found in the 12th and 18th wards of Baltimore City, along with records of some of the marriages of thse children. However checks for the Wantland family have not turned up much useful data to connect to the Traceys to find Ruth's husband or her family. The Wantland family, like the Traceys, seem to start out in St James Parish (Herring Creek Hundred) of Anne Arundel Co., and migrated north to Baltimore Co. The only Wantland appearing in the Baltimore Co., census from 1810 to 1850 is a Jesse Wantland in the 4th and 5th Districts of the County

1810 Census Mine Run Hundred: Jesse Wantling: 2 males 45 and up, 3 females under 10, 1 female 10-16, 1 female 16-26, 1 female 26-45. 1820 Census 5th district of Baltimore Co., Jesse Wantling: 1 male under 10, 1 male 45 and over, 2 females 10-16, 1 female 16 to 26, one female over 45. 1 engaged in agriculture.
1830 Census: 5th district of Baltimore Co. Jesse Wantland: 1 male age 60-70, 1 female age 50-60
1840 Census: 4th district of Baltimore Co Jesse Wantland: 1 male age 70-80, 1 female age 70-80 (listed on the same page is Ephraim Tracey)

Going back to 1790 census in the Mine Run Hundred is Isaac Wantland with 1 male over 16, two males under 16, and 2 females, and Thomas Wantland with 2 males over 16 and 3 females.

Thomas Wantland owned land in the northwest corner of Baltimore Co., MD around the same area as the various Tracey familes. Thomas Wantland received a comm. warrent for the tract of 11.5 acres called "The Wilderness" 4 Aug 1790, Surveyed 3 Aug 1790, and patented 6 Apr 1802. In the 1798 Federal Tax Assessment: Isaac Wantland is listed in the Mine Run and Upper Gunpowder Hundred with 100 acres, adjacent to Thomas Wantland who had 232+ acres.

According to a genealogy of the Cullison family in the Journal of the Maryland Genealogical Society Vol 35, #3, Elijah Cullison b. about 1775 in Baltimore (son of WIliam Cullison) married Margaret Wantland on 14 Apr 1807 in Baltimore Co., and moved to Coshocton Co., OH by 1820. Further data is provided noting that Thomas Wantland married Susanna Cullison, 20 Jan 1763, recorded in the St John's and St George's parish register. Thomas Wantland was listed in the 1783 tax assessment with 5 persons.

Other research so far found that Rachel M. Wantland, daughter of Thomas married John W. Hauptman, 12 Sept 1850 according to the 14 Sept 1850 Baltimore Sun.

Thus far I have not found other information on a Tracey-Wantland marriage or a Wantland Thomas marriage, except from the will that we know, Jemima Thomas married Mr. Wantland and her daughter Ruth married Mr. Tracey. Based on their children's birth dates, the Ruth Wantland to Mr Tracey marriage probably occured around 1800.
