THE HISTORY OF BEECH BRANCH SCHOOL
By W. R. Conley
While sitting around one day I began to collect my thoughts of
the surrounding country, the people I once knew, and the scenes
of my childhood days. What I couldn't remember too well, I asked
a few of the older citizens to help me in bringing things I once
had a sketch of to date. While Flat Gap, KY was my post office, I
lived three miles from Flat Gap on a little tributary of Laurel
Creek known as Drakes Fork.
About one-and half miles from Flat Gap, KY, was a community
known as Beech Branch. This community was organized into a school
district known as Beech Branch School, District No. 27. The site
of the school house was secured from JESSE SPARKS, a land owner
of the community. The price of the land was $2.00 and was paid
August 13, 1889.
BILL PHILLIPS and NICHOLAS SPARKS cut the logs, hewed them out
and built the school in 1887 , When the old school house was
abandoned for a new location, ISOM SALYER was then in possession
of the land. The logs of the old school house were sold to the
Baptist Church and a house was erected on the point at Laurel
Hill. Later this house burned.
In 1913 a new school house was built a half mile farther down
the creek. HENDERSON WHEELER took the contract of building the
house for $100.00. FRED MEADE was then Supt. of Johnson County
Schools When this school house was abandoned and school children
transported to Flat Gap School, GEORGE BRANHAM bought it for $250.00.
The following pages were taken from the Trustees Record,
School District No. 27, now in possession of Charles Ross, Flat
Gap, KY.
