The
University of Kentucky Libraries, King Library Reprographics
Department does all the microfilming of newspapers for the State
of Kentucky and participated in the National Endowment for the Humanities
National Newspaper Microfilming project from 1987 - 1991. Due to
that project, they filmed back as far as 1787. They can make copies
of any of these reels for purchase. They have a computerized database
according to each county, which lists the City, title of the newspaper,
dates on the reel and the price. Anyone can request a list according
to which County they are interested in and we will get it out to them as
soon as possible. They are gradually getting these county lists online
and we will add the Southeast Kentucky County lists as they become available.
Those
interested can request a list of microfilm or place an order for microfilm
via e-mail or snail mail. The response time for the list is 24 hours.
For microfilm, response time depends on the number of reels ordered
1
- 50 reels 2-4 weeks
50
+ reels 6+ weeks
You will
be invoiced for your film order so you do not have to put down a deposit
or send money at the time you order. The price is calculated per
number of feet per reel. A full reel is 100 feet and the cost is
$27.00 (.27 per foot). Contact: Cheryl

This
database contains the full text of major articles gleaned from over 2,500
issues of The New York Herald, The Charleston Mercury and
The
Richmond Enquirer,published between
November 1, 1860 and April 15, 1865. The text begins with the events preceding
the outbreak of war at Fort Sumter, continues through the surrender at
Appomattox, and concludes with the assassination and funeral of Abraham
Lincoln. Included are descriptive news articles, eye-witness accounts and
official reports of battles and events, editorials, advertisements and
biographies. A great effort has been made also to include articles which
describe other than military concerns of the day. These include such topics
as travel, arts and leisure, geographical descriptions, sports and sporting,
social events, etc. Since the major events are described in detail by both
Union and Confederate papers, their opposing perspectives are readily available
for comparative evaluation.
