Blame it on Salt
The First 150 Years of an Unruly County and Some of its People


Clay County owes its beginning to salt. It was abundant along Goose 
Creek and was valuable beyond the imagination of modern generations. 
Salt brought to Goose Creek a unique mix of people who created a 
different sort of culture from other eastern Kentucky counties not to 
mention the rest of the state. When the educated, wealthy salt 
families fell out amongst themselves they had ready surrogates to 
fight their feuds -- the unruly Scotch Irish settlers who came to the 
area after the good land further west and north had been taken in the 
late 1790s. The feuds that resulted defined Kentucky's most 
troublesome county and made national headlines for decades. When the 
Civil War started the county's situation was likewise unique because 
of the large number of slaves employed in the salt works by the salt 
magnates. An example of the complications that arose over the war was 
the fact that famed Union Brig. General T. T. Garrard's father, Col. 
Daniel Garrard, was a strong supporter of the Confederacy. The county 
suffered greatly because of the war in ways not generally known to 
the public.

In exploring his genealogy the author came to realize he could not 
separate his family history from the history of Clay County. Several 
of the family members were here at the start in 1807 and contained 
slave owners, feuders and drinkers, but also educators and strivers 
for the public good -- a part of the complicated mix that makes Clay 
County unique in Kentucky history. The story of how and why these 
several families came to Goose Creek, Red Bird and the South Fork 
beginning in about 1798 is in large part the story of the county
itself.

WHEN THEY HANGED THE FIDDLER

When They Hanged the Fiddler, by: Jess Wilson, was first published in 1978.
It was reviewed, favorably, in the Kentucky Historical Society Register and in the Filson Club Quarterly.
Dr. Thomas Clark, Kentucky's most eminent historian, in the concluding paragraph of his introduction to the Fiddler, had this to say: "This book helps to root the human present into the soils of the human past. It lays bare the personal histories of families and their, all but interminable, interrelationships. For those still living on the land it gives a sense of pride and security of community, for those who have moved away, it helps to maintain links of kinship and association with the region and its past. ......."

The book has been out of print for some years. However, due to the many requests, the Author has prepared 150 hard bound facsimile copies, the fifth printing. When ordering, please include instructions for autographing.

THE SUGAR POND AND THE FRITTER TREE
The Sugar Pond and the Fritter Tree, was first published by Kentucky Imprints, Berea, Kentucky in 1981. These were sold out. However, due to the many requests, I have completed a Revised Second Printing. This new updated copy includes several stories that were not in the original book.

Remarks about the book in Jess' own words:

"When I was a lad, if someone moved away to seek their fortune in another place where the living was easier, it was often said of them that they had gone to seek the sugar pond and fritter tree. The title story in this book is about such a family. The other stories are retold stories from my childhood."
D. Warren Lambert, Ph.D., a professor at Berea College, sums the book up pretty well in a couple of paragraphs in his introduction, to quote:

It is unnecessary to argue whether the following pages of Jess Wilson's collected boyhood memories, old family yarns, and traditional Kentucky mountain humor and wisdom fall under the category of history, folk literature, or plain entertainment. They are a fortunate combination of all three, set in the background of that peculiar marriage of Elizabethan England to a fast growing America which was Appalachia in the first half of the twentieth century.
Much of this book of course, is just pure Jess Wilson, revealing that pleasurable combination of native wit with old-fashioned and eminently wholesome horse sense philosophy which has already endeared him to the readers of his other book When They Hanged The Fiddler.

Leftovers From It Happened Here, A 64 page paper-back book now in its eighth printing. This is an accumulation of articles written by Jess and published in the Rual Kentuckian Magazine, prior to 1983. A memorable collection that was not included in either of his other books.
