Pharmacists and Pharmacies

 

In the early years, most of the compounding and dispensing was done by the local physician.  The longest established pharmacy in Newport was at Fourth and York Streets opposite the court house.  It had been there before the Civil War.  The 1860 directory shows B Tyler as owner.  Pharmacists who followed were:
J R Yungblut
C Fechter
John Bartholomew
Clem Fennel-1916
Stanley Ulrey
R Quehl

The second recorded pharmacy was at Sixth and York Streets in Newport.  In 1860 the owner was G H Stewart followed by:
L P Stone
Ed Thesing-1890
Walter Dempsey
Robert Quehl
Dan Kavanaugh

In 1868 there was a pharmacy on lower Monmouth Street owned by Ed Boppart.  It was in existence years before this.  Later it was owned by Charles Keener on the northwest corner of Second and Monmouth.

Drug stores in 1867 Newport Directory were:
Adolph Boppart-108 Monmouth
P Stonel-York and Jefferson
J R Yungblut-York and Bellevue

1890's Pharmacies and pharmacists were:
Joseph G Feth-Apothecary Madison and Columbia-Newport
Kroegel's Drug Store-3d and Monmouth-Newport
J H Yungblut-druggist at Kroegel's
Henry Wertheimer
Louis Holzhauer
Al Gruele
Ed Theising
F W Specht-druggist
Otto Bange-druggist
Otto Breede-druggist
Dr. George E Platts-druggist in Bellevue
