Pharmacists and Pharmacies
In the early years, most of the compounding and
dispensing was done by the local physician. The longest established
pharmacy in Newport was at Fourth and York Streets opposite the court house.
It had been there before the Civil War. The 1860 directory shows B
Tyler as owner. Pharmacists who followed were:

The second recorded pharmacy was at Sixth and
York Streets in Newport. In 1860 the owner was G H Stewart followed by:

In 1868 there was a pharmacy on lower Monmouth Street owned by Ed Boppart. It was in existence years before this. Later it was owned by Charles Keener on the northwest corner of Second and Monmouth.
