The Daniel Family; Early Settlers of Campbell County
By Martha Pelfry from the family files at the Campbell County Historical Society
The first of the Daniel line in American that has been uncovered through research is Captain William Daniel, 1630-1698, in Middlesex County on Chesapeake Bay in Virginia. In 1672 a William Daniel received a land patent pf 115 acres in that county for transporting three immigrants. As there were only 83 families residing in Middlesex by 1668, it is rather likely that this is our line.
From 1674 until his will was proved on 3 Oct 1698, he is mentioned numerous times in Middlesex County records and in Christ Church parish records. He had a son James Daniel (1680-1740) who married Margaret Vivian (2 Apr 1684-1750). Their son, Charles Daniel (6 Mar 1709-1796) married Jane Mickelborough. Their son, Charles Daniel Jr. and his wife Sarah Tate Daniel and family of eleven children left Louisa County and about 1791 settled in Scott County Kentucky. From there they were in Grant and in 1795 they were in Campbell County. In September of 1796 he and his son, William Daniel were "duly sworn to Act as Viewers to mark out a road."
The Daniel family lands were in the Grant's Lick area of southern Campbell County, in the area of Phillips Creek, Plum Creek and the Licking River near Griffin's Ford. At one time, Charles owned the land where the salt mine at present day Grant's Lick, was located.
