Bullitt County was formed in 1797 from Jefferson and Nelson Counties. In 1824, a portion was taken to form Spencer County. It is located in the Western Knobs region of the state.

The elevation in the county ranges from 385 to 998 feet above sea level. In 2000 the county population was 61,236 in a land area of 299.08 square miles, an average of 204.7 people per square mile. Other major communities include; Mount Washington, Taylorsville, Lebanon Junction, Clermont, Brooks, Pioneer Village, Hillview and Zoneton. The county is bordered by Hardin, Jefferson, Spencer, Meade and Nelson Counties.
      The county seat, City of Shepherdsville, was founded in the late eighteenth century by Adam Shepherd on the Salt River. It was chartered in 1793. The Shepherdsville post office opened in 1806. The city population in 2000 was 8,334.  Zip Code 40165.
