Mrs. Annie Wieder Peterson, 1869-1952
Back in the year 1872 a young couple named Mr. and Mrs. F. C. Weider left their homeland, Denmark, to make the then rather dangerous crossing of the Atlantic in order to establish a home in America. With them were two little daughters, Annie and Mary, one three years of age, the other younger. This personal history is a last tribute to the memory of the elder of the two. She was born in Maribo, Denmark, on June 17 in 1869. After arrival the parents immediately came westward to Clay Center, Kansas, which was the first home for about four years. Then they decided to engage in farming and moved to the Crooked Creek neighborhood where they lived the rest of their lives. Annie, who had begun her schooling in Clay Center, finished her education near the new home.
A friendship developed, later leading to the marriage of Embert Peterson and Annie Wieder on September 5 in 1886. They at once also began farming in the same community and a happy and congenial relationship thus began lasted for many years. Into this home the parents have welcomed ten children, eight daughters and two sons who have all lived to manhood and womanhood and could bear testimony to the love, devotion and cheerful fellowship that existed and was always evident in this family group,
During her life Mrs. Peterson served as daughter, sister, wife and mother in a very capable manner and of late years her grandchildren and great grand-children have brought her much happiness, but she has also undergone the experience of sorrow, which has been borne with fortitude as she has seen her parents, her husband, her two sons Walter and William, her daughter-in-law and her son-in-law precede her into the tomb. But since she became a widow in 1940 she has found life filled with a goodly measure of happiness and contentment as she has divided her time at the homes of her daughters where she was always welcome and lovingly cared for. For about the last year as her physical strength declined, she had lived with her daughter, Mrs. Ida Pickett, and it was there in Manhattan where her death occurred on Sunday, December 14, 1952, when she had reached the advanced age of 83 years, 5 months and 27 days.
Aside from her family interests she has also found time to engage in the various ladies' activities of the Alert Mission Church.
Hers was a busy and well filled carrying good will wherever she went and as she came to its close, The comforting and assurring resurrection promise as it came through the voice of the Redeemer can well be repeated at this time, "She shall live again."
Feeling the loss most keenly are the eight living daughters, Mrs. Ida Pickett, Manhattan, Mrs. Millie Blount, Pioneer, Ohio; Mrs. Mary Michaelsen, Omaha, Neb.; Mrs. Ruth Peterson, Randolph; Mrs. Esther Houck, Los Angeles, Calif.; Mrs. Ellen Jenkins, Manhattan; Mrs. Alice Norris, Leonardville; Mrs. Maude Leach, Randolph; 11 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Mary Lundberg of Omaha, Nebr., and Mrs. Sophia Flohr of Leonardville; two brothers, Will and Fred Weider, both of Leonardville. Many other relatives and numerous friends will remember her kind and considerate attitude as she associated with them in life.
Services were held in the Eshbaugh Chapel in Randolph by J. W. Chelander, a family friend for many years, and she was laid to rest in the family lot in the Crooked Creek cemetery. Rites were held at 2 p. m. Wednesday, December 17.(unknown newspaper)
