EARLY DEATH RECORDS OF
LYON COUNTY, KANSAS
1885 - 1891 In the late 1800's vital records in Kansas were kept on a county basis. {It was not required by the State
of Kansas until July 1911} The vital records, including deaths, for Lyon county were recorded in three
oversized books. While specific information was to be recorded, it did not always happen. In addition,
not all deaths were recorded as evidenced by comparing these records to the newspaper indices done
by Bob Hodge and cemetery burial records. The first volume contains deaths recorded in Lyon County between October 15, 1885 and November
16, 1891. The record for each person can contain the following information: Name, Date of Report,
Sex, Color, Age (years/months/days), Occupation, Date of Death (month, day, year), Time of Death,
Marital Status, Nationality, Where Born, Length of Residence, Place of Death, Cause of Death,
Complication, Duration of Complication, Duration of Disease, Place of Burial, Date of Burial,
Undertaker Name and Place of Business, Physician Name and Residence. The complete extract for all of these is in a publication, "Early Death Records of Lyon County, Kansas
