Greenwood Cemetery Neosho County, Kansas

The following is a bit of history on the Greenwood Cemetery from a book published by the
Chanute Historical society titled Cemeteries of Neosho County.

East of Chanute on K-39 3 miles, south 1 mile, west side.
The cemetery Corporation was formed 4 Oct 1879.
The plot was deeded to the Association by D.C. Newman 12 Dec 1881.
The first Trustees were: S E Beach, B F Boerstler, H Tomlinson, J M Splane and S Standfield.
The graves on the north side of the main road are in this original cemetery.
South of the main road is one grave, of Earl R. Standfield who deeded 10 acres to the cemetery.

The cemetery is on the west side of this country – gravel road. The old entrance has a cast iron entry that is marked as Greenwood Cemetery but is not usable and is grown over with trees and vines. The useable entrance is actually about a hundred feet south and can be easily missed. The cemetery is approx. ½ mile off the road to the west with only a grassy lane for an approach.
There are many graves only marked with a small pile of loose stones. This cemetery has been known locally since I was a young person as the Civil War Cemetery.
