RALPH PALACIOZ, DROWNING VICTIM, RITES ARE HELD
The Liturgy of the Resurrection was celebrated Monday afternoon at the St. James Catholic Church for Ralph Anthony Palacioz, 17, who drowned in a farm pond southeast of here Saturday night. Father Thomas Reilly conducted the services. Interment was in Calvary cemetery in rural Augusta. The Palacioz youth drowned when a canoe he and two other Augustans were riding in collapsed. The other two swam to shore, it was reported. Department of Safety officials said the Palacioz youth was clothed at the time of the mishap and apparently had trouble swimming when his clothes became wet. Department officers said the canoe was constructed with a “joint” in the center so that it could be “folded up” for easier transportation out of the water. The canoe collapsed at the jointed section, officers noted. The incident was reported to the Department of Safety at 9:28 Saturday night, and the local rescue squad recovered the youth’s body shortly before midnight. Authorities indicated that a number of youths were at the pond at the time of the accident, possibly having a party.
