MarriagesMarriage Records State law authorizes the issuance of certified copies of vital records. Uncertified copies or verifications are not provided to the public. State law also specifies that the initial $12.00 fee for a certified marriage certificate copy is a five-year record search fee – one certified copy is issued if the record is found and if not found, the fee is retained. You will receive either the certified copy or a letter explaining the search conducted and that no record was located. Marriage licenses were required beginning in 1867 at the County level, but they did not began being filed at the State level until May 1, 1913. The Office of Vital Statistics has six methods available for making a request for a death certificate: regular mail, priority mail, telephone, fax, internet, and walk-in customer service. Detailed instructions are available at the Kansas Department of Health & Environment. To inquire about marriage information and fees prior to May 1, 1913 contact: Atchison County Clerk
