ITALIANS IN CHICAGO – ORAL HISTORY PROJECT 1979-1981
This is a list of the people who gave interviews for the Italians in Chicago Project of 1979-1981. The Italians in Chicago Project was a two-year program based at the University of Illinois at Chicago Circle, History Department, and funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities. The project's purpose was to document the Italian American experience in Chicago. Men and women from three generations were interviewed regarding such topics as work, leisure, neighborhoods, family life, religion, interethnic events, and other special events. The cassette tapes and transcripts of these interviews are located at the Florence Rosselli Library at the Italian Cultural Center in Stone Park, IL. A few cassettes and transcripts are missing from the library and have been marked as such below.
This list was compiled by Daniel E. Niemiec in November 2005 as an aid to genealogists who may be related to these families, or whose families came from these towns in Italy. Even though your family may not have been interviewed, you may find a family in this list whose experience was very similar to yours. Maybe they left the same town in Italy for the same reason, or maybe they lived in the same Chicago neighborhood.
The towns listed below are not necessarily the town of birth of the person listed – it may be their parents’ birthplace. If the same name is listed twice, then the parents came from two different towns. Some of the data is incomplete due to gaps in the source material. I have supplemented the information from the original transcripts with dates of death from the Social Security Death Index, though some could not be found, and further on-line lookups on the towns, provinces and regions that were inconclusive in the original interviews. Birthdates have been removed for people who are reasonably assumed to be living.
