Campania, Italy

Regione Campnia Coat of Arms

So you think you want to adopt a comune in Campania?

To adopt a comune in Campania, you will need to know how to create web pages. Since I have created the web pages for Campania and its five provinces, I have a fairly uniform look to this Regione [yep, that is Italian for region].

NOTE: Just so you know, if you are going to adopt a comune in Campania, I am committed to you learning a little Italian along with that. You don't have to know it now. If you have Italian ancestors and do not speak or read Italian, you are about to have some fun! I'm truly committed to having fun when I do research. It should be either an interesting challenge or fun, don't you think?

Now, if I haven't scared you off yet, just know that creating web pages is not as difficult as you might think. There are many web sites on the internet that can teach you how to create web pages. There is also free software available for creating web pages. I will provide links to some of this information, but it will be up to you to decide if you'd like a little challenge. I am self-taught. You can be too. You do not have to create complicated web pages for people to view. I found that if you truly want to do this, you can do this.

Download.com has free and $$ soft ware. You may already have the ability to create web pages in your own computer and don't know it. Explore your computer to be sure.

The requirements sections below may seem like a lot, but it really isn't. Campania is a region in Italy and thus each comune becomes a member of the ItalyGenWeb. It is also then a member of the Mediterranean GenWeb Project and the WorldGenWeb Project. People visiting those sites can then find their way to your comune site.

REQUIREMENTS FOR COMUNES IN THE CAMPANIA REGION

Each comune entry page should have the following links and logos displayed on its site. It would be great to have them look uniform even though your comune site will be a different look and feel than the Region page or the Province pages. I would be very happy to see the below logos and setup at the bottom of those pages, but you are free to display these logos however you wish. This is how I have them displayed on my own pages:

THIS SITE IS AN INTEGRAL PART OF

Italy WorldGenWeb

Items to include on your comune site might include:

  • A short history of the Region, Province or Commune
  • Maps and Geography
  • Photos of the comune and surrounding area
  • Relevant weblinks
  • Emphasis on genealogical resources available for your area
  • Resource Addresses (Libraries, archives)
  • Society Addresses
  • Culture and Religious History
  • Links to relevant Query Boards
  • Mailing List
  • Reference Materials (census, deeds, biographics, etc)

You may want to look at the other pages in ItalyGenWeb to get a better idea of the items they have included in their sites.

The Latter Day Saints (LDS) have filmed many records of comunes in Italy. These are available to be ordered from your local Family History Center (FHC). Be sure to ask how a particular film or films can be left permanently on loan at your local FHC. You can check the LDS site to determine if records have been filmed for your comune of interest.

To determine if the comune of interest has been filmed, perform a search. Place the name of the comune in the box for Place, and the word "Italy" in the next box titled, "Part of (optional)." For example, Senerchia is located here.

Once you have these films in your local FHC, you can begin extracting vital records from the films and creating a database listing from those films for births, marriages and deaths that can be added to the comune sites. I have two assistants who are working with the records of Senerchia, Italy. They will soon be on the website for Senerchia.

MAILING LISTS

The Region of Campania and the five Provinces of Avellino, Benevento, Caserta, Napoli and Salerno all have mailing lists located on the Rootsweb servers. You will want to provide a link on your site to the Region of Campania and to the appropriate Province in which your comune resides. They are located at the following urls:

Region of Campania - http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/intl/ITA/ITA-CAMPANIA.html
Avellino Province - http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/intl/ITA/ITA-CAMPANIA-AVELLINO.html
Benevento Province - http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/intl/ITA/ITA-CAMPANIA-BENEVENTO.html
Caserta Province - http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/intl/ITA/ITA-CAMPANIA-CASERTA.html
Napoli Province - http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/intl/ITA/ITA-CAMPANIA-NAPOLI.html
 Salerno Province - http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/intl/ITA/ITA-CAMPANIA-SALERNO.html

MAILING LISTS FOR A COMUNE

Rootsweb does not have, nor will it create, mail lists for smaller communities than a province. I ran into this dilemma while attempting to set up a mail list for my family's ancestral comune of Senerchia. I still wanted a mail list for those who were researching their ancestors from just a smaller location, so I went to Yahoo Groups and set up a mail list for the comune of Senerchia. It has over 82 subscribers from all over the world who are researching their ancestors for this comune. This list has been very successful in linking individuals to other descendants from across oceans and around the world. The mail lists at Yahoo are very easy to create. If you do not want a list at Yahoo, I'm sure there are other sites at which you could set up a mail list for the comune of your choice.

I suggest placing your Yahoo mail lists at:

Family & Home > Genealogy > By Location > Countries > Italy
This is where my Senerchia mail list is located.

You could also place your Yahoo mailing list at

Family & Home > Genealogy > By Ethnic Origin > Italian

Once you create a mail list for the comune, you become the moderator of that mail list. You then set up the parameters for your list. It is all very simple. If I can do it, you can do it! If you know others who are researching in the comune you are setting up a mail list for, you can send them invitations to join the mail list. I am always on the look out for others having Senerchia ancestors and/or researching Senerchia. I send them invitations, which they can either accept or reject. They do not have to join just because you send them an invitation.

You can add photos to the mail list by creating albums. You can also upload scanned documents, create databases, add links to other sites (which should include your website for the comune, and maybe the province and/or region), create polls, promote the mail list, etc.

I hope you will check out this valuable tool.

NOW ON TO THE FUN INFORMATION!

If you have never created web pages before, please review some of these helpful links. My web browser is AOL. So I'm pretty good at understanding how to use the various functions of AOL and its FTP site. If you have questions about AOL and the FTP program, please let me know. Please review the following page first to see if it explains what you need to know about uploading websites to Rootsweb accounts. AOL and FTP program.
