This 19th century pub still retains its original facade and interior.
The Abbey Theatre (Dublin) used a replica for the set of
J.B.Keane's (The Field) both in Dublin and on its historic Russian tour.

Malta and of the Imperial Order of St. Vladimir.

number of years, also noted ballad writer and contributor to the "Sligo Champion" and T.D. Sullivan's "Weekly News." Gills of
Dublin published a collection of his poems in 1888, "Lays of South Sligo."
23. The Gore-Booths were a distinguished Anglo-Irish family and Lissadell was built in 1830 and is open to
the public during the summer months. In the massive kitchen is the old-fashioned range, the dumb-waiter
(a marvelous contraption for sending dishes upstairs), and in an alcove are great hooks to hang smoked
bacon and fish. Twenty-four tons of coal were burned each year to heat the fortress-like mansion. The
mural portraits of the family members and servants, and the family dog, in the dining room, were the work
of Count Markiewicz.
24. Poet William Butler Yeats, a life-long admirer of aristocratic values (and a bit of a snob) loved the big
houses of the gentry and visited Lissadell on at least one occasion as a houseguest. It was Yeats
grandfather who had been Rector of the church of St. Columba at Drumcliff. The beautiful swan handles
on the the porch doors of the church are a gift from the Yeats Society of Western Australia.
25. Yeats immortalized Lissadell, Eva and Constance, "Two girls in silk kimonos, both Beautiful, one a
gazelle," in his poem, "In Memory of Eva Gore-Booth and Con Markiewicz." Yeats is said to have taken a
dim view of what had become of Countess Constance Markiewicz, however, who fought in the Easter
Rising and was captured by the British as noted in the lines, "The older is condemned to death, Pardoned,
drags out lonely years Conspiring among the ignorant."
26. Sir David Gore-Booth recently resigned as British High Commissioner to India, a post his late father also
held.
27. Sir Edward Aloysius McTiernan (1892-1990) Attorney General of New South Wales. His father (Patrick) was born in Heapstown Co. Sligo.
