Ballinafad Castle built around 1590 to control a strategic pass through the Curlew Mountains. Ballinafad Castle was built 1590-1610. It was taken by the Burkes and other Irish rebels in 1641 but was surrendered back to the English when the Cromwellians later swept Sligo.
Moygara Castle, the principal dwelling of the O'Gara chiefs. Moygara Castle was burned in 1581 by Scottish mercenaries employed by the governor of Connacht. Many O'Garas were killed by them.
