the Church of Ireland in Castleconor
The old Killanley burial ground, just a hundred yards from the Castleconnor Church of
Ireland. The ruins are of a church founded by a holy man named Ainly
over 800 years ago. There are both Catholic and Protestants in this
church, and a local priest told me that you can tell which is which
because they face different directions.
This is Nolan's castle in Enniscrone, Kilglass parish. Thomas Nolan
acquired it in the early 1600s from John Crofton, but two brothers named
MacDonnell sold it to Crofton in 1597. Earlier, Enniscrone was the
territory of the O'Caomhain sept (O'Kavanagh), whose overlords were the
O'Dowds, so it may originally have been an O'Caomhain stronghold.
This is the bridge over the River Easky. It was built in 1846 after a
flood wiped out the former wooden bridge. My grandfather migrated from
here in 1847, and his profession was stonemason. He surely worked on its
construction. The Easky, which rises in the Ox Mountains, is a famous
salmon stream. During the 1798 uprising, a skirmish was fought here
between local rebels and a militia unit marching from Sligo to Ballina
plundering and burning as it went.
