Name: George Bell
Subject: John Donovan, 1850, Portlaw and River Suir
Surnames: DONOVAN, CONWAY
Query: John DONOVAN, possible father of Mary Donovan and grandfather of Patrick CONWAY(d. Jan 15, 1897)of Portlaw Co. Waterford owned a pub in Waterford in his later years (died at 95). Mary Donovan (d. Oct 2, 1848) was Patrick's mother, and she married John Conway, a cooper, in Waterford. Family tradition tells that Mary's father John Donovan owned at least an interest in a fleet of freighters that plied the Suir from Carrick-on-Suir to Cobh and back. Question is, is John the freighter owner the same man as John Donovan the publican? Note that Patrick Conway emigrated to Covington Kentucky (cooper of whiskey barrels) late 1850's and returned to Portlaw as a cooper (butter firkins) before the American Civil War. In his later years, he ran a pub in Portlaw that was then operated by two daughters, Mary and Brigid Conway until the 1930's.

Based on this info, obtained from an 1850 USA census, I guess that John emmigrated to the US sometime between 1802 (his estimated birth year) and 1830 (his estimated marriage year). Any certain townlands, villages, or parishes known to have been the homes of Cotterel families? Any other info?? Many thanks ed

I know he was in Canada at least by March 18, 1839 when his son Thomas Francis Commerford was born in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. He was married to Bridget, I believe Hawkins but not sure this is correct surname. Michael and Bridget's other children are: Elizabeth b. March 29, 1841, Ann (Nancy) b. October 26, 1842; Catherine b. November 4, 1846; and John b. abt. 1848 or 1849. I know about Thomas and his family but know nothing of his siblings or parents. They disappear after 1861. Thomas went to Stephenson County, Illinois and was married there in October 25, 1859. Can anyone help me?

Subject: KERR .. 4 Siblings, born 1795 to 1803, who are parents?
Surnames: KERR, HENDERSON
Query: Hello, Information on my KERR ancestors "fell in my lap" during the spring. Up until then we had only known the very basic information about our line of KERR man. We have since found out that four Kerr siblings migrated from Ireland to Canada around 1825. Three of them were married with children, and one married someone from Canada. They were: Mary Kerr, b.1795, Patrick Kerr, b.1797, Elizabeth Kerr, b.1801, John Kerr, b.1803. Both Mary and John had married into the Henderson family. Once settled in the Quebec Province, all four siblings had many children. We have now found out that we have "distant cousins" all over Canada. And, there were hundreds of both Kerr and Henderson families in Eastern Canada between 1800 and 1850. However, of all the people researching these families, no one can determine who the parents were of: Mary, Patrick, Elizabeth, and John. .. Recently we found a page in a booklet which stated that they had come from .. County Kenny. Obviously this is a typo. But, we don't know whether it was supposed to be .. County Kerry, or . County Kilkenny. ... We would appreciate receiving any information at all about this family.

Our family history indicates that Patrick was a Fenian while in Pottsville, and escaped with his wife and children (Mary, Michael, Anne, Margaret, Julia, and Patrick) in the middle of the night about 1861 to Ontario, Western Canada. His name is also seen in a list if immigrants who exchanged their 50 acre land grant ( given to colonial immigrants) for passage costs. This was paid for by The K&Q Company whose members were; James Taylor,Thomas Petit,John Baylor, Robert Powell & John Stone. No trace has been found of his parents or siblings. The name John for his fathers name was surmised by the naming of his first born son John as is the tradition of his time. Query: Can anyone give me more information on John Howlett who was definitely living at Russellstown House Inistioge by 1867. He was married to Catherine Browne d.c.1890. He died in 1895. They had at least six children. The first I have found was called James Joseph b c 1855 and became a Dominican, Brother Aiden. Two other sons, Michael and Martin, became priests. By the early years of this century a Daniel George Howlett of Russellstown House appears in a directory. Does anyone know anymore about this family or the address?

Query: John WHELAN b. 1824 in Ireland, Bridget RYAN b. 1834, m 1854 Oral history says migration during potato famine. Ended up in Montcalm County MI by 1860 census. Oldest child was 5 and listed as born in MI. Bridget and John listed as born in Ireland. I think they were county Kilkenny because my great grandfather named my grandfather Kenneth, and the fact that the Whelan's and Ryan's had a significant presence there. By 1860 the farm was worth 700 and personnel property worth 230. This leads me to believe that they left earlier in the famine rather than later. The children’s names were Anne, Patrick, Mary, John, James and Ellen. The next generation used the names Kieren, and Kenneth that I can find no ties to other lineages. I would even appreciate lineages that would exclude other Kilkenny WHELAN and RYAN lines.

Query: Completely new to Kilkenny research, and wondering whether anyone is connected to Thomas MOORE, b.1828 (?), Ballyheal, Kilkenny. At 18 he entered the employ of the East India Company as a soldier in the 1st Madras Fusiliers, and left immediately for India on a ship called the Kent out of Waterford. He married Jane Mary Agnes Parker, had several children, rose through the ranks to Quarter Master of the 102nd Regt of Foot, and died in the Isle of Wight in 1872. Does this make any connections with anyone else's Moores in Kilkenny? I have no information whatsoever about him or his family except for his year and place of birth as stated above, taken from the passenger list of the Kent. I gather that birth records of the 1820s are not in Dublin, and may not exist at all. Can a local historian or researcher please, please, tell me what my next step might be?? Yours gratefully,

Query: Catherine Doyle was born March 14, 1845. Some of my relatives mentioned Kilkenny County, Ireland At age 15 she was teaching a catechism class for her church. On their way home after class her students were often pelted with stones by soldiers. One day Katie accompanied her students after class, and her students were stoned again. "Spiritied" Katie Doyle picked up one of the stones, wrapped it in her apron and struck one of the soldiers across the back, injuring him. Back at home her family and friends, realizng her danger, secluded her until they could get her to Liverpool and on a boat to the United States. Thus the date of her migration to the States must be somewhere between 1860 when her age was 15 and 1865 when she married Thomas Egan. They were married at St. Mary's Romans Catholic Church in Sterling, Illinois.USA. The date of the marriage was June 4, 1865. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. John Daly and witnessed by John Durr and Bridget Kane. Catherine and Thomas Egan are my Great Great Grandparents. I am looking for any information on Catherine Doyle and her family in Ireland. Catherine (Katie) and her husband later moved and lived in Schuyler, Nebraska, (County of Colfax) USA. Thomas Egan was born December 25, 1844- Kilkenny? Any information on him would also be helpful.
