creating a database where most early Grant County Records can be found. Anyone

of the cemetery work in Grant County as you can see by my records listed here. Any
interesting articles or stories of early Grant County will be greatly appreciated.

Our Early History
-
Grant County was at one time a part of the county of Knox, but at the time of its organization was included within the limits of Delaware County.
-
The inconvenience to the settlers of transacting county business at Muncie became so great that in 1831 a petition was presented praying for the organization of a new county.
-
The County of Grant was approved February 10, 1831 by the General Assembly of the State of Indiana.
-
The county seat was located in May, 1831, and was named by the county commissioners in honor of the "Swamp Fox" of the Palmetto State, General Francis Marion.

The first term of commissioners' court was held in Grant County at the house of David Branson, Monday September 5, 1831, and continuing three days.

Jeremiah Sutton was elected president. Commissions of Jesse Vermilya, clerk, and Benjamin Berry, sheriff-elect were presented and received the oath of office.

David Branson was appointed county treasurer and Nathan Branson county agent.
