Obituary: DIED. BRADLEY. -- In Liberty Tp., Porter Co., Ind., Oct. 14, 1877, Mrs. Elizabeth M. Bradley, wife of James Bradley and sister of ex-sheriff R. P. Jones. Mrs. Bradley was born in Union county, O., August 18, 1834. She came to Porter county with her parents many years ago and has endured the hardships of a pioneer life. She became united in marriage to James Bradley June 3, 1853, by whom she has had five children -- three sons and two daughters. One son preceded her to the grave; all the rest are living. She made a profession of the Christian religion some eight years ago, and received baptism by the hand of Elder Ira Overturf. She died at the age of 45 years, 1 month and 26 days, in the full hope of eternal life beyond the grave. She leaves an aged mother, four children, brothers and sisters, and numerous relatives and friends to mourn their loss, but we trust their loss is her eternal gain. The funeral services were attended at the house, and an address delivered to a large and sympathizing congregation, by the writer. LORISON GATES. October 16, 1877.

Obituary: Obituary 1: DEATH OF THEODORE S. BULL -- Died at his residence in Liberty tp., Porter county, Ind., March 30, 1891. Mr. Theodore S. Bull, aged 62 years and 10 days. Mr. Bull was born in Cayuga co., N.Y., on the 20th of March, 1829. He came to Indiana in 1850, since which time he has been a resident of Porter county and one of its most highly respected citizens. He was married to Ann M. Mason on the 20th of September, 1855. Ten children were born to this union - seven of whom, with the mother, still survive the father. Mr. Bull accepted Christ as his Savior and became identified with the Christian Church in 1867. During the past winter he again renewed his vows to his Maker, took up the duties of Christian living and by his earnest zeal he has robbed this dread blow of its bitterness, to the dear ones upon whom it falls so heavily, and tempered this intense sorrow with the sweet assurance of a reunion where sorrow is unknown. || Obituary 2: Theodore Bull, a prominent citizen and bee man of this county for many years, died at his home Monday morning after a fews hours illness. The funeral services conducted by J. H. O. Smith were held Wednesday at 11 o'clock, at the Phares school house. || Obituary 3: Theodore Bull, Sr. a well-known pioneer farmer of this county, living between Chesterton and Valparaiso died Monday very suddenly. He had been well up to the night before his death, and was in Valparaiso Saturday. On his return home, he took sick, and soon died. His heart was affected, which rendered the attack of grip so fatal. Mr. Bull was a dealer in bees and honey, and had a wide reputation as an apiarist. || Obituary 4: NORTH-WEST CENTER, April 6th, -- Theodore S. Bull, well-known throughout this county, died suddenly last Monday morning. The deceased was an old resident of this county, universally esteemed for his unbending integrity, his general affability in manner, studious habits and general intelligence. In his special line of work (the apiary) he was a recognized authority, and we are informed, was a valued contributor to several of the journals devoted to bees and bee-keeping. Notwithstanding the difficulties of locomotion, a large and thoughtful concourse followed him to the grave. The remains were interred at the Kimball cemetery.

Obituary: Obituary 1: From the DAILY VIDETTE of Monday, Dec. 24th inst. Died, at 6:30 o'clock this morning, at residence near Commercial Hall, Mrs. Dolly Bullock, sister of Mrs. Harry Kimball, at an advanced age. Her funeral will take place to-morrow and her remains will be laid in the Kimball Cemetery. || Obituary 2: OBITUARY. Passed to a higher life at the residence of Geo. Rawson in Valparriso, Mrs. Dolly Bullock, aged 80 years, 4 months and 23 days, mother of Mrs. Geo. Rawson and sister of Harry Kimball, of this county. She was born in V. T. and at the age of 16 was married to Daniel Bullock, lost her husband in Huron co., O., in March, 1854, since which time she has been a widow. She was the mother of 13 children, 7 boys and 6 girls. Of these only 1 son and 2 daughters survive. The son lives in the far west. None but the two daughters, Mrs. Rawson and Mrs. Wm. Williams, were present to witness the burial scene. To sum up her obituary in a few words, she was a woman whose life was thickly strewn with cares, full of sorrows and acquainted with grief, yet amid all she has well borne afflictions, and with an ever willing hand and loving heart contributed largely to the comfort and happiness of those around her. For the past several years she has been a firm believer in the communion of departed spirits, which she professed to richly enjoy. In her last moments she folded her own arms, closed her own eyes, and without a struggle calmly passed to the other shore, bidding adieu to earth and friends with a strong faith that a higher, nobler and better life awaited her, leaving beside her 3 children, 2 brothers and 1 sister to rejoice over her peaceful departure and her new birth.

Obituary: SUICIDE OF Mr. E. P. COLE -- Mr. E. P. Cole, a very early settler 6 miles north of here along the road to Chesterton, where he has lived for 40 years, has had some trouble 3 or 4 years past with Mr. Johon, living near there, feeling grossly wronged but yet averse to lawing; and perhaps had other matters worrying his mind. He had in months past frequently expressed himself so tired of life as to desire to die. He wrote a letter with a pencil, dated 7th of June, which covered one large page, describing how he felt about the course of Johon in perverting and transcending their agreement as to Johon's taking fallen timber from his premises. The other side of that same sheet was partly covered with a writing dated June 8, which was supplemental to the writing of the 7th, and declared his weariness of life and preference for death. Upon another slip of writing dated June 9, he requested R. P. Jones and John P. [sic] Cole his son, to act with Mrs. Sally Cole his widow, as administrators; said he wished his widow to have all his property for life, except some notions he desired to have distributed to his grandchildren. After dinner Saturday, the 9th, he told his wife that he was going to the barn to spread some grass to dry, and so went out. Some time elapsed, and Mrs. Cole, on looking out saw cattle near the barn in mischief, and went out to drive them off. While doing this she called to Mr. Cole to come and help, but got no answer. This excited her surprise, and drew attention to the barn door, which she found fastened on the outside in a way that was unusual. She looked in and saw her husband hanging by a log chain, fastened to a pole above the threshing floor, to all appearance dead; and certainly beyond her power alone to rescue. She immediately gave alarm, and John C. Cole, and others soon arrived and took him down. They hoped he was not too far gone to be restored, and used such efforts as they could, but all in vain.

COLE, Giles Edward
Birth: 1844
Death: 12 - 12 - 1864
Notes: Civil War, Company E 128th Regiment Indiana Infantry. Giles was presumably buried in December 1864 in Jefferson Barracks, Missouri. Jefferson Barracks is the presumed place of burial since there is no other record of burial elsewhere. However, Lewis M. Cole found signed military records that Edward P. Cole (father), Edward Cole Osborn (cousin), and David B. Osborn (cousin) appeared in Jefferson Barracks, Missouri, to claim the effects of Giles E. Cole in January, 1865. There are two documents: a hospital record listing 1 hat, 1 blouse, 1 pair trowsers, 1 pair drawers, 1 shirt, and 1 blanket, dated Jan. 1st, 1865; and a handwritten document swearing to Edward's relationship to Giles, dated Jan. 13th, 1865 - both signed by Edward P. Cole.

Notes: There is only a simple field stone with the following figures crudely chiseled on it - L Cole 1886. The Boy Scouts keep moving this stone to the side of the cemetery so they can mow it, and I [Tim Cole] keep returning it to one of the unmarked graves since I don't know where she is really buried within this cemetery. She was a sister to Edward P. Cole and was living alone in a small cabin on the property of John C. Cole, her nephew, as reported in the 1880 Census. I think her death was recorded in a Valparaiso newspaper as only a line item in a neighborhood news section, but it was June 19, 1886. She was evidently born in 1820 (from the Census report) in Bronson Township, Huron County, Ohio. Lavina was married December 23, 1861, in Huron County, Ohio, to a W. R. Clark. Any subsequent circumstances concerning this marriage are unknown, only that she arrived a few years later in Porter County, expecting to live with her brother, but his suicide and the turmoil it caused within the family prevented her from achieving that. His son John evidently took care of her after that and until her death. Her husband did not come with her, and she resumed her maiden name -- he may have died, and this may have been her second marriage.[Information concerning the burial of Lavina Cole was provided by J. Timothy Cole on March 2, 2003]

DILLINGHAM, Amanda (Page)
Birth: 5 - 7 - 1798
Death: 1 - 12 - 1880
Notes: It is assumed that Amanda (Page) Dillingham is buried in either the Dillingham Cemetery or the Kimball Cemetery in Liberty Township, Porter Co., Indiana, as her obituary states that she was buried "in the cemetery near by" her son-in-law's home. Her son-in-law is mentioned as Nathan Kimball; therefore, Amanda was most likely buried in the Kimball Cemetery. Neither the Dillingham Cemetery nor the Kimball Cemetery, however, show tombstone or written records of a burial for Amanda Dillingham. There is also no burial record listed for Amanda's husband, Henry Dillingham, in either of these two cemeteries. Neither Amanda nor Henry appear in any other cemetery index prepared for other Porter County, Indiana, cemeteries.

Burial at Kimball Cemetery, Liberty Twp. || Obituary 2: Lonnie Gaines liked to work with his hands. -- By TERRI ANNE GREIG -- Lonnie Dorian Gaines enjoyed working with his hands, whether it was helping to build a deck on a friend's house, working on automobiles or tending his vegetable garden. "He liked to work outside and he was really mechanically inclined," said daughter Jeanette Ritz. "He was very skilled." Mr. Gaines, 74, a former Valparaiso resident, passed away Jan. 19 in Terre Haute. "He was very caring and loving,” she said. "He took care of all of us and made sure we were always safe." Born on a farm in Shelbyville, Mo., Mr. Gaines moved to Valparaiso in 1939. Joining the U.S. Army in 1942, Mr. Gaines served in the Pacific during World War II. He worked in the repair department of IBM until his retirement in 1983, and was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Valparaiso. A self-taught carpenter, Mr. Gaines would build decks, room additions and even houses for friends and family. Jeanette remembered her father loved to till the land, and every year had an abundant crop of tomatoes, corn, carrots and green onions. "There was a pond behind our house," reminisced Jeanette. "And in the winter, if the ice was thick enough, he would take his plow and clear the ice so we could go ice-skating, and he would watch us while we skated." An avid card player, Mr. Gaines enjoyed meeting monthly with family and friends to play pinochle. "I love my father," said Jeanette. “I can't see him anymore. But I can feel him in my heart and in my prayers." Obituary: Obituary 1: Youth Dies In Tragic Mishap - Arthur Hanrahan Fatally Hurt When Horse is Hit By Auto. -- Arthur, 14-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. William Hanrahan, RFD 5, Valparaiso, died this morning in Porter Memorial hospital of injuries received Sunday afternoon in a tragic accident. Astride his pet horse, "Champion," which he had ridden in the horse show Sunday at the county fairgrounds, Arthur was thrown from the animal's back to the pavement while enroute home. The mishap occurred at the Burlington Beach road on State Road 49, according to State Trooper Tony Perotta, who reported the mishap to the office of Porter County Sheriff Harry Borg. According to accounts of the accident, the horse, shying at an oncoming auto driven by Elmer R. Spain, 823 LaPorte road, turned suddenly and was hit on the side of its head by the auto. The animal reared, caught its hoof in the car bumper and threw the youth across the pavement. Rearing a second time, the horse toppled backward onto the boy, causing a skull fracture, broken neck and chest injuries. Efforts of two local physicians, a specialist from Chicago, and a registered nurse, proved futile in an attempt to save the boy's life. Arthur had been an enthusiastic horse lover for years and began riding a Shetland pony at the age of eight. Later he was given "Champion" by his parents, and became a skillful rider. For the past few years he had been in full charge of his father's mink farm, feeding and tending over 150 of the animals daily. He had planned to enter Liberty Center high school next month as a freshman student. In addition to his parents, the youth is survived by a brother, Lynn, 8, grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. William Pigolah [Figolah], Arthur Hanrahan, and two aunts, Mrs. Edward Keene and Mrs. Pearl Rosenberger, Valparaiso, and an uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Hanrahan.
