The Illinois State Genealogical Society currently has two separate Civil War Certificate Projects in progress.
1. The first
involves Civil War Certificates issued to direct descendants of soldiers who served during the Civil War.
2. The 2nd and newest project
arose as a result of researcher requests and involves the documentation and issuance of
Civil War Certificates to indirect descendants of a soldier who served during the war.
As an example,
my own Great Grandfather served as a member of the Union Army during the Civil War. I've applied for and
received a certificate issued in his name, with me as the descendant. His brother was also a soldier during the Civil War and it
is my intention to apply for and receive a "Collateral Ancestor" Certificate in his name. By doing
so, I ensure that the service and decendants of both men is preserved, both in ISGS Files and
thru any publications the Society issues in the future.
