Ayers Cemetery
Menard County, Illinois

Remaining fragments of stones
Directions: From Tallula on Rte. 123 going south, you will go about
1.2 miles on Rte. 123 from the Tallula City Limits to the first cross road.
Turn left there on Niemeir Road and go 0.2 miles. You will see the
cemetery on the left side of the road. It is fenced on three sides and
sits right along the road with the side facing the road open. There isn't a
single stone standing. This is the saddest cemetery I've visited. It is good sized and
there are the remains of a stone at the road edge and then evidence of another
burial at the far back of the cemetery where some other broken pieces of a stone remain.
A quick look around gives the impression of at least three former markers with only
fragments of pieces left. What is more disturbing is that these stones have been
gone for at least two decades, as the Menard County Cemeteries, Vol. I indicates
that in 1982 when Menard County cemeteries were being read, there were
no stones standing then. This is truly sad.
