New Acquisitions!

Recently the Museum received a Magic Lantern. Do you know what they do? Volunteers were amazed, having never seen one before.

The lantern was donated by the Catherine Miller Estate, from John and Trina Miller. The lantern originally belonged to Catherine's grandfather, George A. Taylor.

According to Warman's Thirteenth Antiques and Their Prices by Edwin G. Warman the magic lanterns were forerunners of the home movie machines. The period between 1890 and 1910 was the time of their greatest popularity. The earlier ones used kerosene lanterns which were housed inside the machine, hence the name "Magic Lantern." The majority was manufactured in Germany. Colored glass slides were inserted between the lantern and a lens, reproducing pictures on a wall or sheet. The lantern is in wonderful condition and we thank the Miller family for thinking of us.

Another new acquisition of interest is a bound group of newspapers published in 1889 to 1900 under the name of "The Catlin Racket". While not in very good condition physically, the newspapers are a wonderful reading experience. If you ever thought or heard about the time when Catlin was the place to see "The Fair", this paper gives lots of information. The donor is Marcella Tilton, wife of Amos C. Tilton, son of Clint C. Tilton.

Thank you!
