CAROLYN (SPINDLER) FRIDAY
Carolyn Friday, age 94, of Odebolt,
Iowa, died Thursday, December 20, 2007, at the Odebolt Nursing & Rehab Center in
Odebolt.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday,
December 24, 2007, at St. Martin's Catholic Church in Odebolt, Iowa, under the
direction of Christensen-Huffman Funeral Homes. The Reverend John J. McGuirk
will officiate, with burial to follow at St. Martin's Catholic Cemetery in
Odebolt. Visitation with the family present will be held on Sunday from 2-4 p.m.
at Christensen-Huffman Funeral Home in Odebolt. Memorials in Carolyn's name may

Born September 16, 1913, in Schaller, Iowa, Carolyn M.
Friday was the daughter of Victor and Eugenie (Kleiber) Spindler. She received
her early education in Schaller, then attended the University of Northern Iowa
and Buena Vista College. Carolyn taught elementary school for over thirty years
at many locations, including Schaller, Carroll, Fonda, Lake View, and Odebolt,
Iowa, as well as in the state of Wyoming.
On December 28, 1948, she was married to Lawrence
Friday at Schaller, Iowa. Carolyn was a member of St. Martin's Catholic Church
in Odebolt and of the Rosary Society. Other memberships included the Iowa State
Education Association and Federated Women's Club. Carolyn enjoyed playing bridge
and spending time with family and friends.
Survivors include three children and their spouses,
Charles and Susan Friday of Newell, Mark and Regina Friday of Olathe, KS, and
Carol and Tom Witry of Dubuque; six grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Norma
Spindler of Mason City; as well as other extended family members and a host of
friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband Lawrence in 1993; her parents; an
infant son, Douglas; a brother, Victor "Bud" Spindler; and two sisters, Margaret
Specketer and Alice Hunter.
ANNIE (CORRIN) SAATHOFF
Annie Amelia Saathoff, age 94, of Lytton, Iowa, passed away on
Monday, November 26, 2007, at Park View Care Center in Sac City.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, November 28th
at 1:30 a.m. at the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home in Sac City.
Annie was born on March 31, 1913, in Arthur, Iowa, the daughter of Joseph John
and Lydia Grace (Bennett) Corrin. She grew up in the Odebolt-Arthur area where
she attended country school and graduated from high school. She taught country
school prior to her marriage on September 11, 1935, in Manson, Iowa, to Reent
Saathoff. They made their home near Rockwell City and Sac City before moving to
Lytton in 1953. This union was blessed with three children: Joy, Janet, and
Jerry. She was a member of Emanuel-St. John Lutheran Church in Lytton. On
November 17, 1987, Annie moved into Park View Care Center due to failing health.
Annie was a wonderful and loving wife, mother, and
grandmother. She would do anything for her children. She enjoyed working in her
vegetable garden, sharing her produce with others, and working in her flower
garden, raising gladiolas and mums, and filling her house with African Violets.
Annie also enjoyed sewing and will be remembered for her great cooking and
baking skills. She loved her family deeply and treasured their many visits.
Those left to mourn her passing include her children:
Joy Reynolds and her significant other, Al Shimer of Perry, Iowa; Jerry Saathoff
and wife Jennifer of Windsor Heights, Iowa; four grandchildren: Kathy Hansen and
husband John, Wendy Nicolaisen and husband Willis, Ryan Saathoff, and Jessy
Saathoff and significant other Dana Robinson; six great-grandchildren; two
great-great grandchildren; her sister, Louise Kampen of Laurens, Iowa; and
sisters-in-law: Mary Corrin of Early, Iowa, and Cena Junkman of Rockwell City,
Iowa; many extended family members and friends.
Annie was preceded in death by her parents; husband
Reent on September 29, 1998; daughter Janet; two brothers: Earl and Eugene
Corrin; and sister Edith Brucker.
MELVIN BOYSEN
Melvin Gale Boysen, age 76, of
Odebolt, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, December 9, 2007, at St. Luke’s Hospital
in Sioux City, Iowa, following a lengthy illness with cancer.
Memorial services were held at 1:30 p.m., Thursday,
December 13th, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Kiron, Iowa, with Reverend Mark
Hansen officiating. Burial was at the Deloit Cemetery under the direction of the
Farber & Otteman Funeral Home.
Melvin was born on June 24, 1931 in Crawford County,
Goodrich Township, near Deloit, Iowa, the son of Henry Fred and Inez Evelyn
(Childress) Boysen. He was raised on the farm and attended Goodrich Township No.
1 Country School and farmed with his Dad, until he enlisted in the Army. From
1955-1957, Melvin served his country, during the Korean Conflict. After his
discharge, he returned to farming, road construction, and driving truck. In 1970
he moved to Alton and West Plains, Missouri. He retired in 1994 at the age of
63. Melvin returned to Iowa in 2002, moving to Odebolt where he resided at the
time of his death.
He was confirmed in Zion Lutheran Church, Denison,
Iowa, in 1948, where he was a member, until recently, transferring to St. John’s
Lutheran Church in Kiron, Iowa.
His favorite pastime was taking care of his dog Buttons
of many years, and meeting his friends for coffee and conversation. He was a
member of the American Legion Post No. 61 in Ida Grove.
He is survived by his brothers: Hubert and wife Corlys
of Arthur, IA; Leonard and wife LaVon of Sac City, IA; Dean and wife Virginia of
West Burlington, IA; Don and friend Ruby of West Plains, MO; and Jim and wife
Judy of Holstein, IA. Other survivors include his best friend of many years,
Darlene Boyens of Kiron and her family, many nieces and nephews, and extended
family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister in
infancy, Luverne Unabell Boysen; brother Rev. Joseph Boysen and his wife Sharon;
a nephew Ted Boysen; and niece Susan Boysen.
RAYMOND MAU
Raymond H. Mau, 77, of Cedar Falls,
died Monday, November 12 at Allen Memorial Hospital, Waterloo, of lung cancer.
Services were held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, November 16 at
Hagarty Waychoff Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, with burial in
Elmwood Cemetery. Full military rites were conducted by Evansdale Amvets Post 31
and Waterloo Amvets Post 19.
He was born July 30, 1930, in Odebolt, son of William
E. and Johanna A. Johnson Mau. He married Josephine Fecht June 23, 1957 in
Waterloo. She died February 16, 1999.
Mr. Mau was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in the Korean
War. He was employed with John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works for 32 years,
retiring in 1985. After his retirement, he was employed at the Dunkerton Co-op.
Survivors include: two daughters, Joanne Hiller of
Waterloo and Christine (Bob) Junkins of Stout; five grandchildren, a
great-granddaughter and two on the way and a brother, Lawrence (Cindy) Mau of
Janesville.
He was preceded in death by a son, Roger Gene Mau; a
brother, Ronald Mau and a sister, Violetta Walton; a son-in-law, Matt Hiller.
DELORES (WOOD) BIRD
Delores J. Bird, 80, of Odebolt, died
Wednesday, December 12, 2007, at St. Anthony Hospital in Carroll.
Services were 10:30 a.m. on Monday, December 17, at the Gunderson Funeral Chapel
in Fort Dodge. Interment was in Corpus Christi Cemetery.
Delores J. Wood, the daughter of Martin and Helen
(Daisy) Wood, was born February 20, 1927, in Lake City. She received her
education in Lake City and Rockwell City. In 1957, Delores was united in
marriage to William Bird in Fort Dodge. Delores raised her family and was a
homemaker.
Delores is survived by her children, Cecilia (Jerry)
Mathies, Deloit; William (Denise) Bird, Newell; Robert (Kimberly) Bird, Charles
Bird and Anthony Bird, all of Odebolt; 13 grandchildren and nine
great-grandchildren; brothers, Ronald Wood, Fort Dodge; and Herbert Wood,
Walnut; Dennis Wood; Kenneth Wood; Dwight Wood; and Raymond Sanders; two
sisters, Wanda Sanders, Seger, South Dakota; and Vickie Wood, Omaha, NE.
She was preceded in death by her husband William; two
children, Martin and Lorraine, grandson Adrian Hike; and her parents and four
brothers.

EVELYN G. E. (LICHTENBURG) ANDERSON -- Red Wing, MN
RED WING -- The funeral for Evelyn G. E. Anderson will be at
10 a.m. Friday at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel in Red Wing,
with the Rev. Todd Engel officiating. Burial will be in Burnside Cemetery, Red
Wing.
Mrs. Anderson, 86, of Red Wing, died Monday (Dec. 3,
2007) at Fairview Red Wing Medical Center.
Evelyn Gertrude Emma Lichtenburg was born Jan. 16,
1921, in Odebolt, Iowa. She graduated from high school in 1939 and worked as a
phone operator for Bell Telephone for 25 years. She married G. Harold Anderson
on Aug. 5, 1964, in Storm Lake, Iowa. They lived in Red Wing, where she worked
at the old city library. The couple moved to the Seminary Plaza in 1995; her
husband died March 9, 1995. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in
Red Wing.
She is survived by a brother, Kenneth (Beverly)
Lichtenburg of Mesa, Ariz. Other survivors include a niece and two nephews. In
addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a nephew.
Visitation will be an hour before the service at Mahn
Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel. Memorials are preferred to St. John's
Lutheran School or Church.

SGT. ADRIAN HIKE
Sergeant Adrian Edward Hike,
age 26, was killed in action in Afghanistan on November 12, 2007. He was
assigned to the 1st Squadron, 91st Calvery Regiment based at Schweinfurt,
Germany.
Hike died of injuries suffered when his patrol vehicle struck and detonated
an IED near Bermel in eastern Afghanistan. He was on a resupply mission to
Combat Outpost Malekshav, a remote base less than three miles from the Pakistani
border.
He was born July 21, 1981, in Carroll, Iowa, and attended schools in Odebolt,
Lake View, Wall Lake, and Sac City where he graduated in 2000.
After enlisting in the Army in 2002 he completed Cavalry Scout training at
Ft. Knox. His duty station was Schweinfurt, Germany.
In February 2005 he was deployed to Iraq where he served for a year and
received a Purple Heart due to injuries. In 2006 he attended Airborne and
Paratrooper training for 8 weeks at Ft. Benning. In June 2007 he was deployed to
Afghanistan where he was killed in action.
Hike lived a theme of selfless service that started long before his military
career. He gave up his own security to keep his family together, and never
shared experiences with his mom he thought would give her nightmares. His
military career shed him of childish habits and crafted him into a true hero.
That is how he will be remembered.
He is survived by his parents, Robert Bird of Odebolt and Kim Bird of
Ralston; four brothers: Robert Jr. of Odebolt, Martin and his wife Jill of
Harcourt, Jonathon of Ft. Dodge, and Aaron of Rinard; his Grandmother Delores
Bird of Odebolt; his Grandmother Patricia Stout of Ralston and Special Friend
William Schneider; his Great-grandmother Daisy Hyland of Lake City; Uncles:

Hike and friend Karen Stewart of Des Moines, Bill Bird and wife Denise of

He was preceded in death by Aunt Karen Kay, Grandfathers William Bird of
Odebolt, Raymond Hike of Effingham, Illinois, Ferman Stout of Ralston, and
Great-grandparents Lloyd Hyland of Lake City, and Kenneth and Frieda Hike of
Carroll.
Mass of the Christian Burial was held at 9:30 A.M. on Saturday, November 24,
2007 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Carroll with Father James McCormick as
Celebrant. Visitation was held at 9:00 A.M. on Friday at the Dahn and Woodhouse
Funeral Home in Carroll where there was a Christian Wake Service held by Holy
Spirit Parish. The casket was moved to the church at 8:00 A.M. on Saturday to
lie in state until the time of service. Burial was in the Carroll City Cemetery
with full military honors.
Casket bearers were SGT Christopher Winburn, SGT Jeffery Hodge, SSGT Andrew
Larson, SGT Stephen Gauthier, SGT Christopher Matz, and SSGT Robert Connelly.
Honorary casket bearers were his 22 cousins.

TERESA E. (ZIEGMANN) LILLY
Teresa E. Lilly of Blair,
Nebraska died Saturday, Oct. 27, 2007, at Memorial Community Hospital in Blair.
Funeral services were 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31, at St. Francis Borgia
Catholic Church in Blair. Interment was at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Wall Lake
(Iowa) cemetery.
Teresa Elizabeth Ziegmann was born in Odebolt, Iowa, to Joseph and Mary (Stelpflug)
Ziegmann. She graduated from Odebolt High School.
She married Alvin Reising; he preceded her in death in 1945. She later
married James Lilly.
The Lillys moved to Blair in 1965 and owned and operated the Blair bowling
alley. Mrs. Lilly was a member of the Blair Fraternal Order of Eagles and St.
Francis Church Ladies Society, numerous card clubs, and originated the Blair
Ladies bridge marathon group.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Roger and Donna Reising
of Omaha and Dennis and Carole Reising of Mechanicsville, Va.; daughters and
sons-in-law, Marilyn and Bill Beach of Sac City, Iowa, Joan and Gene Turner of
O'Neill, Mary and Bob Parks of Omaha, Teresa and Tom Mencke of Blair, and Carol
and Jim McGinley of Mansfield, Texas; 21 grandchildren; numerous
great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Barbara Engel of
Sac City; brothers, Msgr. Leonard Ziegmann of San Antonio, Texas, and Walter
Ziegmann of Iowa City, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James, in 1985; an infant son,
Dale Reising; brothers, John, Paul and Edward Ziegmann; and a grandson, Thomas
Reising.

EVELYN (LINGREN) KORNER
Evelyn Ione Korner, 79,
passed away on Wednesday, October 17, 2007, at St. Rose Dominican Hospital in
Las Vegas, Nevada. Graveside services were held at 11:00 a.m., on Wednesday,
October 24th, at Morgan Township Cemetery in Schleswig, Iowa, with Pastor Merle
Mahnken officiating.
She was born January 3, 1928 in Gowrie, Iowa, the daughter of Emory and
Elda (Clark) Lingren.
Evelyn was united in marriage to William Korner on January 5, 1949. A long
time resident of Odebolt, Iowa, she later resided in Denison and Lake View
before moving to Las Vegas several years ago. Evelyn was in the food service
industry most of her life. She was a cook at Colonial Manor Nursing Home in
Odebolt and at Job Corps in Denison. She and her late husband, William, also
owned a bar and restaurant in Kiron.
She is survived by three sisters: Jean (Mark) Rossow of Jefferson, IA, Geri
Irwin of Iowa City, IA, and Wavey Baeth of California; three brothers: Red
Lingren of Schleswig, IA, Don (Elaine) Lingren of Des Moines, IA, and Denny
(Pat) Lingren of Denison, IA; three daughters: Cindy McWhirt of Omaha, NE, Becky
Ellinger of Fort Collins, CO, and Vicki (Charles) Spoonhour of Las Vegas, NV;
four grandchildren: Missy Bluml, Jason (Joni) Bluml, Tiffany Ellinger and Tate
Ellinger; four great-grandchildren: Taylor, Temara and Tarek Ellinger and Rylan
Bluml; and by her beloved Shihtzu, Radar.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; husband

BRADLEY KLINE, JR.
Bradley J. Kline, Jr., age
15, of Odebolt, Iowa, died Saturday, October 27, 2007, of injuries sustained in
an automobile accident near Mapleton, Iowa.
Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Thursday, November 1, 2007, at the United
Methodist Church in Odebolt, Iowa, under the direction of Christensen-Huffman
Funeral Homes. The Reverend DeAnn Klapp was officiate, with burial following in
the Odebolt Cemetery.
Born July 21, 1992, in Omaha, Nebraska, Bradley Jay Kline, Jr. was the son
of Bradley and Jodi (Hartwell) Kline. He recently moved with his family to
Odebolt, Iowa, where he was a freshman at Odebolt-Arthur High School. Bradley
will be remembered as a daredevil who enjoyed riding four-wheelers and go-carts.
He also liked camping, fishing, music, and spending time with his family. Most
of all, he loved playing hacky sack with his friends.
Survivors include his parents, Bradley and Jodi Kline of Odebolt; a
brother, Brent (Megan) Young of Clarinda, two sisters, Ashley Kline and fiancé
Eric Reimers of Clare, and Nichole Kline of Odebolt; maternal grandparents,
Phillip and Sally Hartwell of Council Bluffs; paternal grandmother, Charlotte
Cranford of Ponca City, OK; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Robert Kline, Sr.;
and an uncle, Michael Kline.

MICHAEL BABCOCK
Michael Willis Babcock,
age 19, of Odebolt, Iowa, died on Saturday, October 27, 2007, near Mapleton,
Iowa, as the result of a car accident.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday, October 31st, at the
Trinity Lutheran Church in Odebolt with Reverend Albert Buelow officiating.
Burial was at the Odebolt Cemetery under the direction of the Farber & Otteman
Funeral Home.
Michael was born February 16, 1988, at Horn Memorial Hospital, Ida Grove,
Iowa, the son of Gary and Sharon (Neumann) Babcock. He was baptized March 20,
1988 and confirmed May 4, 2003, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Odebolt.
Michael enjoyed his life to the fullest. One of his
nicknames was “Smiles” for his beautiful smile which he always shared. His easy
going nature made him a friend to all. He graduated from Odebolt Arthur
Community School this spring and was currently attending classes at Iowa Lakes
Community College in Emmetsburg majoring in Ag Business Technology.
Michael enjoyed working in his hometown community; he mowed lawns, helped
several local farmers, worked at Farmers Coop, drove truck and helped his
brother with carpentry projects. This all led to his love of farming and being
outdoors.
Michael enjoyed collecting Breyer horses, tractors, Mickey Mouse mementos,
and puppies. His favorite horse being Popcorn, who guarded his bed. He supported
his favorite team, the Chicago Bears.
We miss Michael greatly and hearing him say his favorite phrase, “What’s
Up?”
Left to cherish his memory include his parents: Gary and Sharon Babcock and
his brother Troy of Odebolt; grandmother Donna Neumann of Rockwell City; uncles

DELETTE (JOHNSON) PETERS
Delette Peters, age 92, of
Odebolt, Iowa, and formerly of Arthur, died Thursday, November 1, 2007, at Horn
Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, Iowa.
Memorial services were held 11:00 a.m. Monday, November 5, 2007, at the
Arthur Evangelical Free Church in Arthur, Iowa, under the direction of
Christensen-Huffman Funeral Homes. The Reverend Glen Lozier officiated the
service, with inurnment in the Kiron Cemetery.
Delette Johnson Peters was born September 29, 1915, to J.B. (Cuba John) and
Hattie Johnson in Wheeler Township near Kiron, Iowa. She attended local schools.
Delette met her husband, Carroll Peters, while attending Free Church Bible
Institute in Chicago, Illinois. They were married May 2, 1942, in Windom,
Minnesota. As a pastor and wife, they served numerous churches in Wisconsin,
Nebraska, Minnesota, and Iowa.
Delette was a much-loved pastor's wife. She enjoyed teaching children,
hospitality, and visiting the sick and elderly. She was a faithful prayer
warrior. Many were encouraged by weekly cards and letters as Delette was an avid
writer. Family and friends loved her sense of humor, quick wit, servant heart,
and great cooking - especially rusks and rice pudding. Delette loved Jesus with
all of her heart and faithfully and sacrificially served Him.
The last two years of her life, Delette resided at the Odebolt Nursing and
Rehab Center. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carroll; her parents;
two brothers, Kermit and Wally; and a sister, Doree Lindberg.
Survivors include several nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.

ROLAND GEYER
Roland L. Geyer, age 90,
of Storm Lake, Iowa, and longtime businessman from Early, Iowa, died Sunday,
October 21, 2007 at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.
Funeral Services for Mr. Geyer were held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October
25, 2007 at Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake. Reverend Duane Queen
will officiate. Burial was in the Odebolt Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral
Home in Storm Lake was in charge of the arrangements.
Roland Louis Geyer was born October 14, 1917 in Early, Iowa, the son of
Fred and Mabel (Halboth) Geyer. He was baptized into the Christian faith at the
Presbyterian Church in Odebolt. He received his education at a country school
near Odebolt.
In 1939, Roland was married to Dorothy Mae Morey. They welcomed their son,
Tod Allen, in 1959. The couple farmed in the Odebolt area from 1940 until 1950,
at which time they purchased and moved to a farm south of Early. Roland raised
purebred Spotted Poland China hogs and had a herd of Guernsey dairy cattle. An
avid horseman, Roland bought, sold, trained and showed Palomino quarter horses
for 24 years. In 1981, the couple bought a home and moved into Storm Lake, where
they lived happily until Dorothy passed away in 1993. In April 2006, Roland
moved to Otsego Place in Storm Lake.
During his farming years, Roland worked part-time for USDA/ASCS from 1954
to 1957. In 1958, Roland became a federal crop insurance agent. He served as
chairman of the Iowa Agents Association from 1975 to 1981. He was a charter
member of the National Agent Association, organized in 1977 and was appointed
treasurer of this association. In 1981, Roland helped organize the present
National Association of Crop Insurance Agents (NACIA). He also served as a past
treasurer of the NACIA. Roland’s son, Tod, and friend, Phil Fanning, joined
Roland as partners in the Roland Geyer Agency in Early in 1985.
Despite keeping up with his farming and business interests, Roland always
put his family first. He always stressed the importance of a family vacation
each year. He loved to travel in the western states of the U.S. A loving husband
and devoted father, Roland’s caring ways will be dearly missed.

Roland was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 54 years, Dorothy;

Edna M. Buse, age 72, of
Odebolt, Iowa, passed away on Monday, October 22, 2007, at Odebolt Nursing and
Rehab Center.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, October 25th, at
Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Lake View with Rev. James Travis officiating. Burial
was at the Wall Lake Cemetery under the direction of the Farber & Otteman
Funeral Home.
Edna was born on November 20, 1934, on the family farm near Breda, the
daughter of Elmer and Lizzie (Schmidt) Mohr. She attended country school and
graduated from Auburn High School. Before she was married, Edna worked as a
secretary at the Auburn High School. On September 3, 1961, she was united in
marriage to Donald D. Buse at Zion Lutheran Church in Auburn. This union was
blessed with three children: Doris, Ruth, and Rose.
Edna farmed with her husband near Ulmer until his death in 2001. She was a
devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who loved to spend time with her family.
Her two grandchildren brought her great joy. Edna loved to spend time
crocheting, quilting and reading. She moved into Odebolt in 2005. Edna was a
member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Lake View.
Survivors include her daughters: Doris Remmers and husband Ryan of Melvin,
IA, and Ruth Koenen and husband Mark of Kiron, IA; two grandchildren: Luke and
Sarah Koenen; three brothers: Hubert Mohr of Ord, NE, Marvin Mohr and wife Ruth
of Ord, NE, and Wayne Mohr and wife Ruth of Sac City, IA; her sister, Verna
Perry of Dolliver, IA; sister-in-law, Marjorie Mohr of Odebolt, IA; and
sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Darlene and Gerald Ott of Jefferson, IA;
extended family members; and many friends. She was preceded in death by her
parents; husband Donald; daughter Rose Marie in 1985; brother Wilbert Mohr; and

Alice Rebecca “Becky”
Mandernach, age 93, of Odebolt, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, October 23, 2007,
at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, October 26th, at the
United Methodist Church in Odebolt with Reverend DeAnn Klapp officiating. Burial
was at the Odebolt Cemetery under the direction of the Farber & Otteman Funeral
Home.
Rebecca Bye was born on September 30, 1914, in Milltown, Indiana to Mabel
(Lincoln) and Shelby Bye. In 1920 she moved with her family to Odebolt, Iowa,
where she resided until her death. She was baptized at Thompson’s Chapel in
Depauw, Indiana as an infant. Becky was a member of the Odebolt Methodist
Church, United Methodist Women, Rachael Circle, and several patriotic
organizations and social groups.
Becky attended Odebolt Public School through the 10th grade, and then
worked in various homes as a mother’s helper.
On June 1, 1936, Becky was married to Glen Mandernach at the Methodist
Parsonage in Odebolt by Reverend Farnham. They had two children, Charles and
Joyce.
She loved to read, play cards, and visit with family and friends. She was
always happy and jolly, an inspiration to everyone she met.
Becky lived at the Odebolt Nursing and Rehab Center for three and a half
years prior to moving into the Odebolt Assisted Living Center eight months ago.
Those left to mourn her passing are her children: Chuck Mandernach of
Dallas, TX, and Joyce Curtis of Odebolt, IA; grandchildren: Steven (Angela)
Martiens of Tremont, IL, Christen Zimbelman of Aurora, CO, Becky (Larry) Dunbar
of La Porte, IN, Fred (Toni) Martiens of Munich, Germany, Theresa (Christopher)
Cutting of Pekin, IL, Kelly Ross of Dallas, TX, and Kent (Marilee) Mandernach of
Forney, TX; great-grandchildren: Emily, Erin, and Sean Martiens, Kyle Zimbelman,
Brittany and Kayla Dunbar, Chase and Taylor Cutting, and Bowen Mandernach. Other
survivors include her sisters: Ruth Kelly of Omaha, NE, JoAnn (Jim) Scott of
Odebolt, IA, and Judy (Randy) Clark of Monroe, IA; her brother Bill (Janet) Bye

She saw the passing of her parents; her husband Glen; son-in-law Terry

Ruby C. Paulson, age 79,
of Odebolt, Iowa, passed away on Friday, October 5, 2007, at the Odebolt Nursing
and Rehab Center.
Funeral services for Ruby were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, October 8th, at
the Trinity Lutheran Church in Odebolt with Pastor Albert Buelow officiating.
Burial was at the Odebolt Cemetery under the direction of the Farber & Otteman
Funeral Home.
Ruby was born on June 18, 1928, to John and Carrie (Sinning) Lamaak at
Herring, Iowa, where she grew up and received her education in the country
school near Herring. She was baptized at Wheatland Presbyterian as an infant and
confirmed at Peace Lutheran Church in Wall Lake. On June 29, 1946, Ruby was
united in marriage at Peace Lutheran Church in Wall Lake to Wesley Arthur
Paulson. They made their home on a farm near Odebolt, where they raised their
three children, Carol, Thomas, and Donna. Ruby moved into Odebolt after Wesley
passed away in 1987.
Ruby was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and
friend. She loved spending time with her family, cooking and baking many
favorite treats for her grandchildren, making beautiful quilts, and working on
cross word puzzles. She worked at the Venture Inn at Odebolt as a cook’s
assistant and was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Odebolt.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children: Carol and her
husband Lloyd Schramm of Arthur, Iowa; Thomas and his wife Diane of Odebolt; and
Donna Maschoff and her fiancé Al Matson of Crystal Lake, Iowa; seven
grandchildren; and her seven great-grandchildren. Other survivors include her
brothers and sisters: Annabelle Craig of Anthon, Violet Werkmeister of Early,
Donald (Marcia) Lamaak of Early, Jack (Audrey) Lamaak of Wall Lake, Virgil
Lamaak of Odebolt, Orville (Carol) Lamaak of Denison, and Geraldine Lamaak of

Ruby was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Wesley on February 22,

LaVon Helen Schulte, age
46, of Carroll, Iowa, formerly of Odebolt, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday,
October 3, 2007, at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll.
Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m., Friday, October 5th, at St.
Martin’s Catholic Church in Odebolt with Father John McGuirk officiating. Burial
was at St. Martin’s Catholic Cemetery in Odebolt under the direction of the
Farber & Otteman Funeral Home.
LaVon was born on December 6, 1960, to Leo and Rita (Taphorn) Schulte in
Ida Grove, Iowa. She was baptized at St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Odebolt and
raised on a farm near Arthur. LaVon attended Special Education Classes in Wall
Lake until 1981. She moved to New Hope Village in 1982 and resided at the 18th
Street Group Home until her death.
LaVon enjoyed playing UNO, doing word puzzle books, and going bowling. She
always had a score of 56. Watching the Lawrence Welk Show on Saturday nights
with her housemates was her favorite pastime. She cherished the times spent with
family, especially Wyatt, her great nephew.
Survivors include her sister, Linda (Norm) Seeden of Storm Lake, Iowa;
brothers, Larry (Diane) Schulte of Odebolt, Iowa, and Lyle (Darlyce) Schulte of
N. Mankato, Minnesota; nieces, Kristin (Sherwin) Kuch of Keystone, Iowa and

Funeral services for Lucy Huldeen
were held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, October 6, 2007, at the First Presbyterian
Church in Odebolt, Iowa, with the Rev. Mark Volkers officiating. Music for the
service included the congregation singing "O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing",
"How Great Thou Art" and "To God Be the Glory" with Carol Raasch serving as
organist. Special music selections included the granddaughters singing "The Lord
is in This Place" and "Turn Your Eyes upon Jesus" and the grandchildren singing
"My Jesus I Love Thee" with Kala Zanoni serving as pianist. Honorary
pallbearers included Clarence Etler, Wallace and Berneta Carstensen, Bob Mason,
Mary Neville, Irene Siebrecht, Til Einspahr and Harriett Ricker. Interment was
at the Odebolt Cemetery, Odebolt, Iowa. Following the services the family
cordially invited everyone to return to the church and join them for fellowship

Lucy died Tuesday, October 2, 2007, at the Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida
Grove, Iowa, with her loving children at her side. At the time of her death she
had been blessed with 83 years, 1 month and 2 days.
Lucy Huldeen was born at Boone, Iowa, August 30, 1924, the daughter of John
Howard and Ruth Canfield Wayne. When she was five years of age the family moved
to Sac City before moving to Odebolt where she was raised and graduated from
high school with the class of 1942.
During World War II Lucy resided in Topeka, Kansas and Kansas City, Kansas
where she was a radio crystal inspector. She then returned to Odebolt and was
employed for Dr. McAllister.
On December 12, 1948, Lucy was united in marriage with John Huldeen at the
First Presbyterian Church in Odebolt, Iowa. Their union was blessed with four
children, Barbara, J. Bruce, Brent and Gwen. They made their home on the farm at
Odebolt, moving to Marcus, Iowa, in 1952. In the spring of 1955 they returned to
the Huldeen family farm at Odebolt. Through the years, in addition to being a
farmwife, mother and homemaker, Lucy was an Avon Representative, worked at the
Gingerbread House Development Center and, for fourteen years, was employed at
Schaller Telemarketing.
John died October 11, 2001, and Lucy remained on the farm until moving to
Odebolt in the fall of 2004. She most recently had resided at Odebolt Nursing
and Rehab Center.
Through the years Lucy enjoyed her memberships in the First Presbyterian
Church in Odebolt, Presbyterian Women, Tuesday Club, two supper clubs, one in
Marcus and one in Odebolt, Storm Lake Lion's Club serving as a past president,
Wall Lake Lion's Club serving as vice-president, was former treasurer of the 5th
District Federation of Republican Women, former president of the Sac County
Republican Women, performing with the Huldeen Family Trio at area worship
services and the Siouxland Master Chorale.
In her spare time she enjoyed flower gardening and spending time with her
family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren and she enjoyed her
many pet farm cats.
Including her parents and her husband, Lucy was also preceded in death by
one son, J. Bruce Huldeen and one infant brother, John Howard Wayne, Jr.
Those remaining to cherish her memory include three children and their
spouses, Barbara and Rick Votrobeck of Arthur, Iowa, Brent and Bev Huldeen of
Sioux City, Iowa and Gwen and Arlan Ecklund of Denison, Iowa, six grandchildren,

Edna Grove, 87, of
Holstein, Iowa, passed away on Friday, September 21, 2007, at the Good Samaritan
Center, Holstein, Iowa.
Services were held at 10:00 am on Monday, September 24, 2007, at United
Methodist Church with Pastor Todd Schlitter officiating. Burial was in the
Schaller Cemetery, Schaller, Iowa.
Edna was born October 18, 1919, to Harry and Hattie (Alderson) Ohlsen at
Schaller, Iowa. She worked on the farm with her parents.
Edna married Burley E. Grove at the family farm on February 27, 1940. The
couple farmed surrounding areas of Arthur and Galva until retirement. The couple
was blessed with four children.
Edna was a wonderful wife and mother. She worked many years at the Horn
Memorial Hospital, Ida Grove, Iowa. She welcomed many new babies, helped moms
adjust to motherhood, and acquired a vast number of friends. She truly enjoyed
her many years at the hospital and all the memories she accumulated.
Edna was a member of the United Methodist Church, Arthur, Iowa, until
transferring her membership to the United Methodist Church, Holstein, Iowa. She
appreciated her church family very much.
Edna loved to share her talent and ability of taking scraps of material and
turning them into beautiful quilts and then sharing them with family members and
friends. Her sewing machine was always humming with her little, white head bent
over another quilt. She was very well known for her famous apple pies, her
delicious chicken pot pies, and her never ending pot of homemade noodles. There
were always noodles simmering on the stove waiting for someone to stop in.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Burley,
granddaughter, Christie Baker; and brother, Paul Ohlsen.
Mom will be missed by her four children and their spouses, Sherry and Gary
Gritten of Odebolt, Iowa, Rochelle and Hank Luscombe of Holstein, Iowa, Katie
and Steve James of Madison, South Dakota, and Ronnie and Jeanie Grove of Battle
Creek, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; one brother, Wilbur and
his wife Jo Ohlsen of Rockwell City, Iowa; one sister-in-law, Marci Ohlsen of
Costa Mesa, California.

Godbersen, age 91, of Odebolt, Iowa, passed away on Friday, August 17, 2007, at
the Odebolt Nursing and Rehab Center in Odebolt.
Funeral services were held on Monday, August 20th, at 10:30 a.m., at the
Presbyterian Church in Odebolt with Rev. Mark Volkers officiating. Burial was
at the Odebolt Cemetery under the direction of the Farber & Otteman Funeral
Home.
Gen was born on March 31, 1916, in Odebolt, Iowa, the daughter of Gustav J.
and Eva Elizabeth (Luft) Freese. She graduated from Odebolt High School in
1934, with a class of 36 students.
Gen worked at the Adams Ranch for three years as a maid. On February 17,
1937, she was united in marriage to Harry Albert Godbersen. They made their
home on the Godbersen family farm near Odebolt, in Richland Township. This
union was blessed with five children: Janice, Ethel, James, Arlene (who died two
months after her birth), and Renae.
Gen became a member of the Presbyterian Church in Odebolt in 1921. She was
the longest and oldest church member to date. Through the years she taught
Sunday School, daily vacation Bible School, sang in the church choir, was church
deacon, and a member of the Presbyterian Women.
Gen and Harry loved to square dance and play cards. She enjoyed quilting
and visiting with people, working in her garden, canning, and sharing her
produce with others. She also enjoyed playing BINGO with her friends at Odebolt
Nursing and Rehab Center.
Survivors include her children: Ethel (Gene) Subbert of Scranton, IA; James
Godbersen and fiance' Carla Marsh of Mapleton, IA; and Renae Godbersen of
Waukee, IA; grandchildren: Scott (Kelly) Groe of Cedar Rapids, IA; Barry
(Carmen) Groe of Hibbing, MN; Sheila Subbert of Exira, IA; Lonn and Lori Subbert
of Milford, IA; Julie and Rob Litzenberger of Shakopee, MN; Jamie (Elisa)
Godbersen of Castle Rock, CO; Joe Godbersen of Sioux City, IA; and Jeff

FRANCIS F. SIMON
Francis Firman Simon, age 87, of
Odebolt, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, August 4, 2007, at the Odebolt Nursing &
Rehab Center.
A funeral mass for Francis was celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, August
9th at St. Martin’s Catholic Church, Odebolt, Iowa with Reverend John McGuirk
officiating. Burial was at Lone Tree Cemetery in Sioux Rapids, Iowa, with a
presentation of the flag by the Graeber-Rowe American Legion Post No. 394 of
Sioux Rapids, Iowa. The Farber & Otteman Funeral Home in Odebolt was in charge
of arrangements.
Francis was born on February 15, 1920, in Odebolt, the second child of Firman
Martin and Mary (Pfeiffer) Simon. After his early schooling in Odebolt and
Early, Francis moved with his parents and siblings to a farm west of Sioux
Rapids in 1932. Francis graduated from Sioux Rapids High School in 1937. On
September 10, 1941, Francis enlisted in the U. S. Navy, completing boot camp at
Great Lakes, Illinois. His chosen military career was in diesel mechanics and
subsequently received his training in Cleveland and the Brooklyn Naval Yard.
During WWII, Francis served with valor in the Asiatic/Pacific and Philippine
Islands on a patrol/gunboat. Along with five United States Naval medals, he and
his unit were awarded the Philippine Liberation and Philippine Presidential
Citation.
Francis received his Honorable Discharge on October 20, 1945. After
returning to Sioux Rapids for a short time, Francis left for St. Louis to
continue his education/training in diesel electric power generation and received
his graduate diploma. He was then employed by Iowa Public Service (IPS) and
subsequently Mid-American Energy Co. at their facilities in Audubon, Le Mars,
Ida Grove, and Odebolt for over thirty years. He was a member of the
International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW).
Survivors include his siblings: Alvin (Nelva Dawn) Simon of Colorado
Springs, Colorado, Mary Ann Wilson of Cortez, Colorado, Raymond G. (Shirley)
Simon of Sioux Rapids, Iowa, Paul (Betty) Simon of Rolling Meadows, Illinois,
sister-in-law, Helen Simon of Sioux Rapids; and several nieces and nephews. He
was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Amos, Donald, Caroline and
Clarence.
Special thanks from the family to the Odebolt Nursing and Rehab Center and
staff for the outstanding care afforded to Francis during the final years of his
life.

Grace E. Paul, age 102, of Odebolt, Iowa passed away on Sunday, March 11,
2007, at the Woodlands Rehabilitation Center in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
A graveside inurnment service was held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 14,
2007, in the Odebolt Cemetery, with Rev. Kathy Spracklin of the United Methodist
Church officiating.
Grace Ella Paul was born in Wheeler Township, Sac County, Iowa, on August
13, 1904, the daughter of Allie J. and Minnie E. (Sheldon) Paul. She attended
Odebolt Public School. Grace resided in Odebolt until 2001, when she moved to
Council Bluffs, Iowa, closer to her niece and family.
During World War II, Grace aided her country by working as a welder in Des
Moines, Iowa, and lived with her sister, Amy, while her brother-in-law was
overseas. At the end of the war, Grace returned to Odebolt and assisted her
brother in managing their farm.
Grace was an avid reader and enjoyed cooking, gardening, traveling and
fishing. She had a great appreciation for wildlife and our natural resources.
She shared these interests with her nieces and nephews and was a great
inspiration to all of them. Her greatest joy came from spending time with them
and their children. Her nieces and nephews cherish the many fond memories of the
times spent with her.
Grace belonged to several organizations. She was a member of The Daughters
of the American Revolution, American Legion Auxiliary, Isis Club and United
Methodist Church of Odebolt.
At the time of her death, Grace was survived by her sister, Thelma Sonksen
(now deceased); seven nieces, five nephews, and many grand nieces and nephews.
Grace was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Amy Mauer and Winnie
Scanlan; brothers, Archie, Verne and Milton; a niece, and two nephews.

ALMA (TACK) HUMMEL
Alma M. Hummel, age 95, of Cushing, Iowa
and formerly of Schaller, Iowa, died Wednesday, June 13, 2007 at the
Correctionville Nursing and Rehab Center in Correctionville, Iowa.
Funeral services for Mrs. Hummel were held Monday, June 18, 2007 at 10:30
a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Schaller, with Reverend David Lyons
officiating. Burial was in the Schaller Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral
Home in Schaller was in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Hummel was born July 26, 1911 in Tower City, North Dakota, the
daughter of August and Emma (Schwartz) Tack. She was baptized October 11, 1911
in Tower City. Alma’s parents were homesteading southwest of Valentine, Nebraska
and making their home in a sod house. In 1918, Alma’s parents died in the flu
epidemic, leaving four children. The children were taken to North Dakota by
train to live with relatives.
Alma’s aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Gosch, went to North Dakota and
brought her back to Wall Lake, Iowa and raised her in their home. She attended
school at Levey No. 3 west of Wall Lake. She was confirmed in Peace Lutheran
Church in Wall Lake on March 28, 1926. After graduating from 8th grade, Alma
worked as a “hired girl” until she married William V. Hummel on August 20, 1930
in Sioux City, Iowa. The couple lived in Odebolt, Iowa until 1940, when they
moved to Ida Grove, Iowa, where Bill was employed at the Ida Grove Creamery. In
1942 they moved to a farm by Arthur, Iowa and then to Schaller in 1945, where
they farmed until 1974, when they retired and moved to Schaller. William died on
February 28, 1975. In 1993, Alma moved to Cushing. She enjoyed crocheting,
playing cards and Aggravation, and doing crossword puzzles. She was a member of
the auxiliary of the Odebolt Nursing Home for 20 years.
Survivors include her daughter and husband, Barbara and Lawrence Miller of

GEORGE STREED
George Eric Streed, age 82, of Odebolt,
Iowa, passed away on Sunday, June 17, 2007, at the Odebolt Nursing and Rehab
Center in Odebolt.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, June 21st, at the United
Methodist Church in Odebolt with Rev. Kathy Spracklin officiating. Burial was at
the Odebolt Cemetery under the direction of the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home.
George was born on August 30, 1924, near Holstein, Iowa, the son of
Theodore and Alma (Wienert) Streed. He attended grade school in the Galva and
Holstein areas and later graduated from the Odebolt High School. He furthered
his education in his adult years by attending night classes.
On November 11, 1945, he was united in marriage to Elnora Stout of Sac
City, Iowa. To this union four children were born: David, Esther, Mark and Mary.
On September 5, 1975, George married Anna Gunderson Roll, they made their
home in Odebolt.
In his own words George referred to himself as being an "Iowa Plow Boy"
(farmer). He began farming in March of 1949, after serving his country from
January of 1946 to April of 1947.
George was also a former area manager for Standard Oil Fertilizer where he
initiated and supervised 21 plants in N.W. Iowa and one in Nebraska. He went on
to be a maintenance foreman for Shinrone Farms, and then a heavy duty equipment
operator for Pittman Construction. He was a self-taught expert on Iowa's land
formations/soils.
In his earlier years George was a 4-H leader and he enjoyed square dance.
During his later years he loved to create beautiful gifts in his woodworking
area, traveling, and selling Watkins products. He helped revive the Odebolt
American Legion, and volunteered his time transporting Odebolt citizens to
doctors appointments in Omaha, Des Moines, and Sioux City. Even in his senior
years one could find him giving simple rides around the area pointing out his
successful "dirt moving" or "bulldozing." He established a special relationship
with each of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Survivors included his children: David Streed and wife Suzan of Lafayette,
CO; Dr. Esther Streed of Urbandale, IA; Mark Streed and wife Candy of Lafayette,
CO; and Mary Streed of Parker, CO; and a step daughter, Marlene Noll and husband
Les of Spirit Lake, IA. He is also survived by his ten grandchildren: James,
David, Angi, Renee, Rachel, Jenny, Shari, Brian, Angie and Nate; 19
great-grandchildren, and one great-great granddaughter. Other survivors include
his brother Ted Streed of Perry, IA, and his two sisters: Louise Clausen of
McCook Lake, SD, and Gladys Albers of Cherokee, IA.
George was preceded in death by his parents; both wives; grandson Daren
Streed; and his three sisters: Alice Streed, Marie Cline, and Doris Bruns.

Sidney Carstensen, age 86, passed away
at his home in Boca Raton, Florida on May 22, 2007.
He was born April 17, 1921, the son of the late Nick and Mary Carstensen.
He is survived by his sons, Charles and Greg, granddaughter Nicole, and
brothers Wally and Leonard.

Eleanor Edna
(Kessler) Schwab, age 92, of Scottsdale, Arizona and formerly of Schaller, Iowa,
passed away Thursday, May 31, 2007, in Scottsdale.
Services celebrating the life of Mrs. Schwab were held on Monday, June 4,
2007, at Messinger Mortuary, Scottsdale, Arizona, and local services on

Eleanor was born on July 12, 1914, in Odebolt, Iowa to Edward and Lydia (Wallbaum)
Kessler. She graduated from Odebolt High School in 1931 and attended the
National Business Training School in Sioux City, Iowa. John Grohe Seed Farms of
Schaller, Iowa employed her. Eleanor married Lester William Schwab on June 11,
1940 and they made their home in Schaller. Lester owned and operated Schwab
Electric, while she was a homemaker and a mother of four children.
Eleanor was an active member of the community and First United Methodist
Church. In 1983, some years after her husband’s death, Eleanor moved to
Scottsdale, Arizona. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Scottsdale
and various vocal and artist groups and was active in the Scottsdale Senior
Center. Some of her activities with the Center consisted of modeling in fashion
shows and she sang in the Guys and Dolls Showtime Band and Charlie’s Angels
singing groups. She was a season ticket holder to the Scottsdale Performing Arts
Center. Eleanor enjoyed traveling with friends, as she did with her husband. A
love for all things beautiful; faith, family, friendships, music, art and nature
were central in Eleanor’s life. Her talents in the arts brought numerous
opportunities for expression and serenity to a life well lived.
Eleanor is survived by her children and their spouses: Douglas and Sally
Schwab of Scottsdale, Arizona; Allan and Linda Schwab of Battle Creek, Michigan;
Patricia and Richard Selberg of Atlanta, Georgia; and Rebecca and Steven
Hamersley of Ankeny, Iowa; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; her
loving companion, Alex Salzman of Scottsdale, Arizona; extended family and many
friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester; her parents, Edward
and Lydia Kessler; and her brother, Walter Kessler.

SHIRLEY MAE (HENRY) TRUDEAU
Shirley Mae (Henry)
Trudeau, 88, passed from this life on June 5, 2007, in Boone, IA. She was born
November 24, 1918, in Sioux City, IA. Her parents were Bert and Alice (Blonge)
Henry. She graduated from Central High School in Sioux City and later attended
Buena Vista College in Storm Lake. On June 7, 1942, she married Lawrence Trudeau
of Elk Point, SD, in San Antonio, TX, where he was stationed in the Army Air
Corps. They later made their home in Odebolt, IA, where they lived for many
years. She was active in her church, in bridge groups, and with her many friends
in the community and worked as a secretary and grade school teacher’s aide. She
was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She
cared for her husband for many years before his passing in 1999, and in 2002,
she moved to Ames to be near her family. Shirley was blessed with a cheery
disposition, a caring and generous nature, and a great sense of humor. She loved
her family and friends, loved to share a laugh, even at her own expense, and she
had a strong faith in the goodness of God. She will be greatly missed by those
who had the privilege of knowing her.
Shirley is survived by her daughter Linda Trudeau and Linda’s husband Paul
Kaufmann of Ames, IA, her stepdaughters Margaret (Russell) Hanson of Elk Point,
SD, Donna Hoklin of Laurel, MT, and Sherril (Francis) Christensen of Yankton,
SD; grandchildren Shawna Trudeau and her partner Sara Drake, Jeremy Trudeau and
his fiancé Kristin Sifuentes, and step-grandchildren Kathy (Tom) Sandau, Doug
(Jeanne) Hanson, Yvonne (Mark) Doohen, Diane (Dan) Ritter, Darin (Donna) Hanson,
Debbie Jelinek, Jarl Hoklin Jr., Karen (Steve) Ahmann, Kristin (Ryan) Syvrud,
Julie Hoklin, Dennis Christensen, and Kathy (Ray) Campbell, and many, many

Raymond F. Voss, age
95, of Schaller, Iowa, died Sunday, June 3, 2007 at Buena Vista Regional Medical
Center in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Funeral services for Mr. Voss were held Wednesday, June 6, 2007 at 10:30
a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Schaller, with Reverend David Lyons

Raymond F. Voss was born January 25, 1912 in Odebolt, Iowa, the son of
Herman and Cora (Morley) Voss. He was baptized at Peace Lutheran Church in Wall
Lake, Iowa and later confirmed his faith at St. Paul Lutheran Church in
Schaller. He was raised in the Odebolt area and went to school there, graduating
from Odebolt High School.
On May 24, 1932, Raymond was united in marriage to Flora Buehler in
Odebolt. They were blessed with seven children: Ray, Don, Janice, Ethlyn,
Muriel, Albert and Amos. Flora died in 1969. On December 27, 1972, Raymond
married Geraldine Jacobson.
Raymond enjoyed farming and working the land, which he did for much of his
life. He was a member of the Rotary Club for many years. He was a member of St.
Paul Lutheran Church in Schaller, where he was a Sunday School teacher. He liked
to go fishing or hunting and enjoyed a spin around the dance floor. He will be
remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, as
well as a friend to many.
Left to cherish his memory are his son, Ray Voss of Schaller; daughter
Ethlyn Vogler of Beverly Hills, Michigan; daughter Janice Koenen of Odebolt,
Iowa; grandchildren: Cindy, Charlie, Susie, Sandy, Julie, Jim, Jeff, Jon, Mark,
Kelly, Scott, Dawn, Jerry, Jr., Kenny, Andrew, Sara and Amanda; many
step-children, step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren
and several great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Helen Heidemann of Pepin,

Hazel V. Raasch, 95, of Sioux City,
Iowa, formerly of Odebolt, died Friday, May 25, 2007, at the Maple Heights
Nursing Home, Mapleton, Iowa.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., on Tuesday, May 29th, at the
United Methodist Church in Odebolt with Rev. Kathy Spracklin officiating. Burial
was at the Odebolt Cemetery under the direction of the Farber & Otteman Funeral
Home.
Hazel was born March 31, 1912, to Julius and Vernal (Baker) Brucker. She
grew up on a farm near Arthur, Iowa, and graduated from the Arthur High School
in 1929.
She was united in marriage to Willard I. Raasch on December 18, 1930, at
the Methodist parsonage in Deloit, Iowa. They made their home on a farm north of
Odebolt for almost 50 years. Two daughters were born to this union, Genevieve
and Thelma.
Hazel was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, and sister. She
enjoyed spending time with her family, working in her garden, reading, and
sewing. In September, 1980, they moved to Morningside in Sioux City. Willard
passed away in December, 1992.
In July of 2004, Hazel moved to her daughters, Genevieve Schrunk, in
Mapleton. She had resided at Maple Heights Nursing Home since October 31, 2005.
Hazel is survived by two daughters: Mrs. Charlie (Genevieve) Schrunk of
Mapleton and Mrs. Floyd (Thelma) Nelson of Sioux City; eight grandchildren;
twelve great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; one
great-great-grandson; four step great-great grandchildren; a brother-in-law,
Cleo Perkins of Holstein; a sister-in-law Betty Raasch of Odebolt; and many
extended family members.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and six sisters and
two brothers.

KENNETH AHRENHOLTZ
Kenneth Ahrenholtz,
86, of Loveland passed away May 6, 2007 in the Hospice Center at McKee Medical
Center.
He was born in Odebolt, Iowa on their farm March 14, 1921. After high
school Ken received a full athletic scholarship to Grinnell, but he chose to
sacrifice his scholarship to help his Dad on the farm. In the army Ken served
his country in the South Pacific for three years. Afterward he managed a grain
elevator in Iowa and was very active in the community. Ken met Betty Bell at a
dance and they were married June 11, 1949. They moved to Colorado in 1960 where
Ken eventually co-managed A& M Poultry north of Longmont.
Ken and Betty enjoyed music and dancing, especially dancing at the
Broadmoor in Colorado Springs. Ken was an avid sports fan: Broncos, Nuggets and
Rockies were his favorites. He lived and breathed sports. He very much enjoyed
spending time with his grandkids. Ken had a gift for growing beautiful flowers
and he enjoyed the Rocky Mountains. Ken really appreciated great church hymns
and even joined us in song while at Hospice.
Kenneth is survived by his wife of 57 years, Betty Ahrenholtz, daughter
Jean Wiesner and husband Mark and four grandchildren: Kayla, Aaron, Christy,
Anna, and other relatives and friends.
Ken was a great story teller and his grandkids loved his stories from the
“olden days”. He had a dry sense of humor which could brighten our day and he
will be dearly missed.
Cremation has taken place and no services are scheduled at this time.

Edmund J. Bengford,
age 88, of Ida Grove, Iowa, died Monday, April 30, 2007, at Horn Memorial
Hospital in Ida Grove.
Funeral services were held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 3, 2007, at Sacred
Heart Catholic Church in Ida Grove, Iowa, under the direction of
Christensen-Huffman Funeral Homes. The Reverend David Hemann and Deacon Mike
Stover officiated, with burial in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Ida Grove.
Born July 29, 1918, in Odebolt, Iowa, Edmund Joseph Bengford was the son of
John H. and Nettie (Albers) Bengford. Ed received his education at Odebolt
country schools.
On August 11, 1938, Ed was united in marriage to Phyllis Mary Cranston at
St. Martin's Catholic Church in Odebolt, Iowa. During the early years of their
marriage, Ed worked for Krusenstjerna Implement in Odebolt, and later began
farming north of Odebolt. In 1964, he and Phyllis moved to their farm southeast
of Ida Grove. The couple was blessed with three children, Diane, Susan, and
Patrick. Ed and Phyllis enjoyed nearly 67 years of marriage when Phyllis passed
away in 2005.
Ed was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ida Grove where he
served as trustee and taught CCD for many years. In earlier years, he belonged
to the Knights of Columbus in Odebolt. He served on the volunteer ambulance crew
and was a charter member and treasurer of Ida Area for Life. Ed enjoyed
woodworking and life on the farm. He and Phyllis spent nearly 20 happy winters
in Texas.
In addition to his wife, Edmund was preceded in death by his parents; a
daughter, Diane Higgins in 1992; an infant granddaughter, Katherine Higgins; a
grandson, Tim Higgins; and three brothers, Joseph, Leo, and Lawrence Bengford.
Survivors include two children, Susan (Raymond) Drey of Ida Grove, and
Patrick Bengford of Sioux City; 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; a
son-in-law, John Higgins of Galva; a brother, Raymond Bengford of Deloit; four
sisters, Marie Pollien of Odebolt, Eileen (Lou) Cass of Dow City, Rita (Marvin)
Tiefenthaler of Early, and Aloysia (Wes) Bernhardt of Odebolt; and many nieces,
nephews, other relatives and friends.

IRVIN L. STEHR
Irvin L. Stehr was born April 16, 1933,
the son of August and Ada Schultz Stehr. He died Friday, March 30, 2007 at the
Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, Iowa at the age of seventy-three.
Irvin was born on his family farm in Sac County near Odebolt, Iowa. He was
baptized May 7, 1933 at St. John Lutheran Church, Stockholm Township, Kiron,
Iowa and later confirmed there on March 30, 1947. He received his education in a
rural school near his home and graduated from the Odebolt High School with the
class of 1950. After completing his education he farmed with his family until
entering the United States Army on July 22, 1953, serving in Germany as an
intelligence specialist. After completing his military duties and receiving his
honorable discharge he returned to Iowa.
On January 5, 1958, Irvin was united in marriage to Beverlyrae Bartlett at
St. John Lutheran Church, Kiron. The couple made their home on the Stehr family
farm, where Irvin lived his entire life.
Irvin was a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather who loved
teaching and passing on new ideas to his family. He enjoyed farming, especially
his livestock, planting trees and was very particular about painting his
buildings. In his leisure time he enjoyed playing cards.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Joanna Leigh Stehr
in infancy in 1963 and one sister, Shirley Neumann and her husband, Donald, and
his brother-in-law, Jim Ashbrook in 1959. Survivors include his wife, Beverlyrae
of Odebolt; two daughters, Jerilyn Ekstrom and her husband, Kenneth of Odebolt
and Julie Childers of Odebolt; four grandchildren, Allen, David, Kailey and
Ryan; and one sister, Dorothy Schmadeke and her husband, Louis of Arthur; his
father-in-law, Clarence Bartlett of Kiron; many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held 10 a.m., Tuesday, April 3, 2007 at Trinity
Lutheran Church in Odebolt, Iowa. Rev. Albert Buelow officiated the services and
grave side rites held at St. John's Lutheran Cemetery in Kiron, Iowa. Organist
Phyllis Kies provided accompaniment for soloist Linda Foy as she sang "What A
Friend We Have in Jesus," and for the congregational hymns "Abide With Me," "I
Know That My Redeemer Lives," and the hymn "Ashokan Farewell." Those serving as
honorary pallbearers were Charles Gunderson, Howard Hustedt, Keith Flink, Pat
Reis, Jim Wareham. Eric Martens, Don Roth, and Jim Roth. Those serving as
pallbearers were Steven Gunderson, Wayne Wingert, Frank Zimmer, Michael Ashbrook,
Kevin Schurke, and Alan Pudenz. Military Honors were provided by the American
Legion Post 694 of Arcadia, Iowa. The family invited everyone in attendance to
join them for fellowship and lunch served by the Ladies of Trinity. The Huebner
Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

HOWARD EINSPAHR
Howard W. Einspahr, 72, of Overland
Park, KS, passed away April 12, 2007. Memorial services were held at 1:00 p.m.
on April 15 at Faith Lutheran Church, Overland Park, KS. Burial services were
private.
Howard was born in Odebolt, IA to Eva and Leonard
Einspahr.
He graduated from Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, IA
and served in the Army as a Sergeant in Germany from 1955-56.
On June 7, 1959, he married Rita Marie Beisner. Howard
worked for the Health Care Financing Administration in Sioux City, IA, Salina,
KS and Kansas City, MO.
He retired due to health problems caused by Multiple
Sclerosis.
Survivors include his wife Rita; children Jeffrey
(Lori) Einspahr and Jean (Bob) Benson; brothers Duane (Beverly) and Bill (Rose)
Einspahr; sister Margaret Farbelow; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law;
grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

EDWARD ZIEGMANN
Edward R. Ziegmann was born in Odebolt,
Iowa, the son of Joseph J. Ziegmann and Mary L. Stelflug.
He attended St. Martin grade school and Odebolt Public High graduating in 1945.
He worked as an accountant for Boerner and Roth and in 1947 moved to Tecney,
Illinois to work for Tecneygraf. In 1951 he moved to Dubuque and graduated from
Bayless Business School. He moved to Omaha in 1953 and worked for U.S. Supply
until 1975. Moving to Sioux City in 1975, he worked for Catholic Charities until
1985 when he retired because of poor health and moved to Kerrville, Texas. From
there he moved to Fredericksburg in 1995 and finally to San Antonio in 2005.
During his retirement he was active in taking Holy Communion to hospitals
and shut-ins. He was involved in volunteer work with the St. Vincent de Paul
Society in Kerrville and Fredericksburg. He was also an active member of the
Knights of Columbus for over 50 years.
Ed died April 2 and donated his body to the Creighton University Medical
School in Omaha.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers John and Paul.
He is survived by his sisters; Barbara Engel of Sac City and Teresa Lilly of
Blair, Nebraska, and brothers; Walter of Iowa City and Leonard of San Antonio,
Texas.

Grace Ella Paul, 102 yrs., of Council
Bluffs, passed away March 11, 2007.
She was born in Wheeler Twp., Sac County, IA, August 13, 1904 to the late
Allie J. and Minnie E. (Sheldon) Paul. Grace lived most of her life in Odebolt
where she was involved in farming.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Archie, Verne and
Milton Paul; two sisters, Amy (Paul) Mauer and Winnie (Paul) Scanlan.
She is survived by her sister Thelma Sonksen of LeMars, IA and many nieces
and nephews.

Thelma Sonksen, of Le Mars, formerly of
Odebolt, Iowa, passed away Monday, April 2, 2007, at Good Samaritan Village in

Thelma Sonksen was born Feb. 7, 1912, to Allie and Edith (Sheldon) Paul, in
Odebolt, the sixth child in a family of seven. She graduated from Odebolt High
School as valedictorian in 1930. She received a two-year certificate from Iowa
State Teachers College in Cedar Falls in 1932.
She married Marvin Sonksen on Oct. 5, 1932. They had three daughters,
Janet, Lynne and Judy. They farmed south of Odebolt for several years, moving
into Odebolt in 1953. She joined the Odebolt Chronicle staff on April 3, 1953,
as a local and social news editor. In 1962, she was named editor of the
newspaper. She worked with three publishers, Paul Wagner from 1953 until his

She was a member of the Iowa Press Women and served as a district director
at one time. Her popular weekly column "Casual Comments" won awards in the Iowa
Press Women competition as did her news stories and social page in the category
of weekly newspaper in a town of less than 1,500 population.
She was a member of Odebolt United Methodist Church, United Methodist
Women, Mary Circle, Order of the Eastern Star, Past Matrons, Isis Club, M and K
Club, Odebolt Women's Club, Wheeler Improvement Club and a Birthday Club.
She is survived by three daughters, Janet and Bill Bye of Prescott, Ariz.,
Lynne Bogh of Le Mars and Judy Sonksen of Colorado Springs, Colo.; 17
grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; 29 great-great-grandchildren; and a
sister-in-law, Fern Chester of Odebolt.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin on Sept. 20, 1993; a
grandson, Bill J. Brucker; three brothers, Verne, Archie and Milton Paul; and
three sisters, Grace Paul, Winnie Scanlan and Amy Mauer.

PATRICIA (HILBURN) APPLEGATE
Patricia A. Applegate died Saturday,
March 31, 2007 at North Colorado Medical Center - Hospice & Palliative Care
Unite. Services were at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 7, 2007 at Adamson West
Chapel; Interment: Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Patricia A. Applegate was born in Iowa Falls, Iowa, to George and Doris
(Proctor) Hilburn, both public school teachers. Patty (as she was known to
everyone) grew up in Odebolt, Iowa, graduating from high school in 1945 and
going on to the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, where she earned a
teaching degree in 1949.
Trained early on as a classical pianist, she made several recordings during
the 1940s, and music remained an important part of her life.
In 1949 she married Roy Stierlin, and the couple had two sons before
separating in 1954. In 1960 she married Merle Applegate and joined the faculty
at Colorado State University, where she earned her master’s degree in 1962. That
year the family moved to Greeley, and Patty taught English and Humanities at CSC/UNC
until her retirement in 1987.
An authority on the history of England and the English language, she
traveled extensively in Britain, serving on occasion as a historical tour guide.
Besides travel and teaching, her great passions included books and
literature, crossword puzzles and her extensive collection of antique dolls.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church, the American Association
of University Women, PEO, Friends of Weld County Library, Show and Tell Antiques
Club, and Second Childhood Doll & Miniature Club.
Survivors include two sons, Michael Applegate and wife Judy Nordstrom of
Greeley and Marc Applegate of Greeley; four grandchildren, Richard Nehrboss of
Bumpass, VA, Tori Case of Fort Collins, CO, Tad Nordstrom of Lafayette, CO, and
Kelly Adams of Greeley. She is also survived by 7 great grandchildren and 2
great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Merle Applegate on March 8, 1994,
and her parents.

PAUL REINSCHMIDT
Paul A. Reinschmidt, age 67, of rural
Yale, SD, died suddenly of a heart attack at the conclusion of a machinery
auction sale at Clark, SD, on Friday afternoon, March 23, 2007.
His memorial service was at 11:00 AM Wednesday, March 28, at American
Lutheran Church with Rev. Steven Brandsrud and Rev. Kevin Channell officiating.
Burial was at 10:00 AM Wednesday at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery.
Paul A. Reinschmidt was born on January 30, 1940, to Adam and Ruth (Ulrich)
Reinschmidt at his parents’ farm near Yale, SD. Paul attended rural school near
Yale and graduated from Yale High School in 1958. He attended South Dakota State
University for two years and returned home to farm. He served in the South
Dakota National Guard from 1958-1964.
On August 30, 1964, Paul married Janis Lynn Smith at Odebolt, IA.
Paul was baptized at, and became an active member of, Trinity Lutheran
Church of Yale. In 1964, he joined American Lutheran Church of Huron, where he
served at various times as a board member, usher, communion server, lector,
Sunday-school teacher, and choir member. He served on the church synod’s Support
to Ministries Board of Directors in Sioux Falls from 1987 to 1992.
Paul was on the Board of Directors for the Beadle Electric/Dakota Energy
for 25 years, served many years on the Yale Farmers Cooperative Board, the
Northeast TV Cooperative Board, and the Foster Township Board.
He enjoyed his farming, attending farm and machinery auctions, and
traveling. In recent years, he became an avid antique tractor hobbyist and was a
member of the Huron Area Antique Power Association.
Paul will be remembered for his deep faith; his love for his wife, family,
extended family, and many friends; and his good memory and quick wit that could
bring joy to all around him.
He is survived by his wife, Jan of Yale; their three daughters, Tristin and
Jason Gruenhagen of De Smet, SD, Tifani and Scott Williams of Minneapolis, MN,
and Tauni Reinschmidt of Chicago, IL; two granddaughters, Lyric Gruenhagen and
Aria Gruenhagen, (and soon-to-be-born Williams’ twins); two brothers, George
Reinschmidt of Dallas, TX, and Rev. Dr. Howard and Connie Reinschmidt of
Rochester, MN; 1 sister, Gail and Robert Schultz of Traverse City, MI; nieces,
nephews, and other loved relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister and brother-in-law,
Mary Alice and Alvin Walz; and dear friend, Ron Lehr.

DONALD W. MURR
Donald Wayne Murr, age 71, of Odebolt,
Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, March 28, 2007, at Odebolt Nursing & Rehab
Center.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, April 2nd, at Trinity
Lutheran Church in Odebolt officiated by Pastor Albert Buelow. Burial was at the
Odebolt Cemetery under the direction of the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home.
Born on November 1, 1935, in Odebolt, Don was the 4th of six children born
to Arthur and Rose (Werkmeister) Murr. He was baptized April 15, 1936, at home
by the minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Odebolt and became a member
of Trinity Lutheran Church in Odebolt on May 29, 1955. Don attended Odebolt
Elementary School.
He was employed by the Cracker Jack Company in Odebolt for several years,
later on Don did odd jobs for others and mowed lawns for many people around
Odebolt. It was not unusual to see him driving around Odebolt on his riding lawn
mower. He always raised a large garden and took great pride in it, sharing his
bountiful produce with others. He also enjoyed going fishing with Ronald,
traveling with Dolores and her husband Joe, but especially loved to be with his
family, including his nieces and nephews. He made the best popcorn and was an
avid Dallas Cowboy and John Wayne fan.
Survivors include his sisters and brothers: Dolores Sprouse of Aurelia, IA,
Fayetta Konradi of Storm Lake, Barbara Glau and husband Dick of Lake View,
Ronald Murr and wife Berneice of Odebolt, and Jerry Murr and wife Mary of
Corning, MO; many nieces and nephews, and extended family members.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Rose Murr; two
brothers-in-law: Earl Konradi and Joseph Sprouse; and two nieces: Brenda Hugg
and Sonya Murr.

CHESTER F. OGRENChester F. Ogren, age 87, of Odebolt, Iowa, died Saturday, March 10, 2007, at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, Iowa.
Funeral services were held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 15, 2007, at Bethel Lutheran Church in Kiron, Iowa, under the direction of Christensen-Huffman Funeral Homes. The Reverend Patricia Underberg officiated, with burial in Bethel Cemetery in Kiron.
Born November 23, 1919, in Kiron, Iowa, Chester Franklin Ogren was the son of Frank and Minnie (Peterson) Ogren. He grew up and received his education in the Kiron area, graduating from Kiron High School in 1937. Chester served in the United States Air Force for three years during World War II, then returned to Iowa where he farmed the home place north of Kiron. In addition to farming, Chester fed cattle and also was a sales representative for DeKalb Seed Corn Company, earning several awards and trips for his efforts.
He was a lifelong member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Kiron, serving in many capacities over the years, including as a board member of Bethel Cemetery. He also was a member of the American Legion. Chester was well known throughout the area and will be remembered for his love of the land and of the people with whom he associated.
Survivors include four brothers, Allen Ogren of Odebolt, William (Betty) Ogren of Philadelphia, PA, Bob (Marina) Ogren of Las Vegas, NV, and John (Virginia) Ogren of San Marcos, CA; a sister, Frances Soli of Denver, CO; and ten nieces and nephews, Sue Kenny, Scott, Nancy, Jeff, Jim, Steve, Robin, and Mark Ogren, Ann Shively, and Eric Soli. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Caroline Catherine Werkmeister, 88, of Wall
Lake, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, March 10, 2007, at Twilight Acres Nursing
Home in Wall Lake.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 13th, at Peace
Lutheran Church in Wall Lake with Pastor Roger Carlisle officiating. Burial
followed at the Wall Lake Cemetery under the direction of the Farber & Otteman
Funeral Home.
Caroline was born July 29, 1918, on the family farm 5 miles west of Wall
Lake, Levy Township, Sac County, Iowa, the daughter of George and Margaretha
(Lange) Werkmeister. She was baptized on the farm, August 3, 1918, by Pastor
Discher and confirmed at Peace Lutheran Church April 9, 1933, by Pastor
Schwidder. She attended Levy #4 Country School. Caroline remained a lifelong
member of Peace Lutheran Church where she was a member of Ladies Aid, served as
treasurer of Mission Society, and Sunday school teacher for 42 years.
In her younger years Caroline worked as a hired girl for several families
and helped on the family farm for 16 years. She had her own egg business with
3300 layers, retiring in 1977. She moved into Wall Lake December 18, 1993. She
enjoyed visiting with family and friends and playing cards. Caroline moved to
Twilight Acres Nursing Home January 13, 2006.
Survivors include two nephews: Darwin Roth and wife Carol of Lake View,
Iowa, and Kenneth Roth and wife Dixie of Milford, Iowa; and many cousins.
Caroline was preceded in death by her parents, George and Margaretha; her
brother Carl and infant brother Johan; adopted sister, Christina Roth; and
brother-in-law Rolland Roth.

FLORENCE M. (Mandernach) HERRIG
Florence M. Herrig,
age 93, of Odebolt, Iowa, passed away on Friday, February 23, 2007, at the
Stewart Memorial Community Hospital in Lake City, IA.
Florence Marie Mandernach, the daughter of Albert and Lena (Hoefling)
Mandernach, was born on July 30, 1913, on the family farm, in Clinton Township,
northeast of Odebolt, Iowa.
She was baptized on March 22, 1914, by Rev. D. E. Basma and later confirmed
on September 12, 1926, by Rev. Jacob Elner at the Salem Reformed Church which
was located one half mile west of her home. This church was closed in later
years. After her marriage she became a member of the Peace Lutheran Church in
Wall Lake, Iowa.
Florence received her education by attending country school in Clinton
Township through the 8th grade. She then went on to attend Odebolt Public School
and graduated from there in 1931. Florence remained at home on the farm with her
parents until she was married there on October 11, 1934, to Albert Paul Herrig.
The couple made their home on a farm 3 miles east and 1 mile south of
Odebolt. To this union four sons were born, Douglas Albert on April 22, 1937,
Darrell William on July 12, 1939, Dennis Dew on February 6, 1941, and Doyle
Glenn on March 14, 1947.
Following the death of her husband, Florence continued to live on the farm
with her son Dennis, until moving to Twilight Acres in Wall Lake.
Florence enjoyed cooking and baking for her family. She also loved music,
dancing, watching Lawrence Welk on TV, along with playing the piano and organ.
Other interests included crocheting, embroidering and doing family genealogy.
Those left to mourn her passing included her sons, Darrell and his wife
Mary Jo of Oshkosh, WI and Dennis of Odebolt; daughter-in-law Deborah Herrig of
Sprit Lake. Five grandchildren: Daniel Herrig of Grand Forks, N.D. Judson Herrig,
of Elko, MN. Jodi Mancuso of Overland Park KS, Dana and Trent Gilman of
Winneconne, WI and Andrea Easter of Spirt, Lake, IA. Five Great Grandchildren:
Colton Wollesen, Anthony Mancuso, Mallory Mancuso, Jacob Gilman and Abigail
Gilman. Her sister-in-law, Becky Mandernach of Odebolt also survives her along
with numerous, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Florence was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Albert in 1959: two
sons, Douglas and Doyle: and sister and brothers; Mildred and Harry Iversen,
Howard and Louise Mandernach, Glenn Mandernach, and Floyd and Dorothy Mandernach.
She was also preceded in death by brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Harvey and
Marie Herrig, Verona and Tom Ferris, Roy and Lucille Herrig, and William Herrig.
Funeral services were at 10:30 A.M. on Tuesday, February 27, 2007 at the
Peace Lutheran Church in Wall Lake with Rev. Roger Carlisle officiating, and

Tim Ellinger, 58, of Fort Collins, passed
away March 2, 2007.
Tim was born July 27, 1948, in Storm Lake, Iowa, to Donald and Betty

DONNA (Sporleder) GARLOCK
Donna Garlock, age 74, of Storm Lake,
formerly of Odebolt and Lake City, Iowa, died Sunday, February 4, 2007 at Buena
Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake following a brief but courageous
battle with cancer.
Funeral Services for Mrs. Garlock were held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday,
February 7, 2007 at Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake. Burial was in
the Storm Lake Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake was in
charge of the arrangements.
Donna Rae Sporleder was born on December 16, 1932 to Albert and Bessie (Amsden)
Sporleder on a farm in Calhoun County, Iowa near Lake City. Donna attended
country school near Varina, Iowa and then in Auburn, Iowa. She graduated from
Auburn High School with the class of 1951.
On May 26, 1957, Donna was united in marriage to Lance Robert Garlock in
Lake City. The couple was blessed with three children: Lance, Valerie and Gale,
and were married nearly 47 years before Lance died on May 5, 2004.
Lance and Donna owned and operated the Rexall Drug Store from 1966 to 1986
in Odebolt, where they were active members of the community. Donna was a former
member of the Odebolt-Arthur Booster Club, a member of Ingleside Club and served
the Odebolt area as a volunteer EMT. She and Lance then moved to Storm Lake.
Donna was a longtime and faithful member of the Presbyterian Church and
currently a member of Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake. She served her
Lord in many capacities, including the church offices of Elder and Deacon, as
well as on Outreach and various other committees. She was a hospice volunteer,
member of Beta Sigma Sorority and president of the Storm Lake TOPS chapter. At
the time of her death, Donna was semi-retired and managing the Storm Lake Senior
Center. A devoted wife and mother, her treasured family always came first and
was near to her heart. Donna loved life, being with her family and many friends,
and giving of herself to help others. Her caring and gentle presence will be
dearly missed by all those who loved her.
Left to cherish Donna’s memory are her son, Lance G. Garlock of Storm Lake;
daughter Valerie (Duane) Kavanaugh of Groton, South Dakota; daughter Gale (Pat)
McEvoy of Elgin, Minnesota; her precious grandchildren: Spenser and Mikaela
Kavanaugh of Groton, South Dakota and Reece and Braeden McEvoy of Elgin,
Minnesota; sisters-in-law Viola Sporleder of Winona, Minnesota and Betty Garlock
of Fonda, Iowa; cousins Elmer Sporleder, Ann (Sporleder) Jacobs, Dale Sporleder
and Duane Sporleder; nieces and nephews; extended family and a host of friends.

Agnes C. Untied, age 89, of Golden

Agnes C. Jones was born on September 20, 1917, in Sac County, Iowa to Irvil
and Margaret (Beck) Jones. She graduated from Odebolt High School in 1934. She
moved with her parents to Jackson, Minnesota in 1937.
She married Rudy Untiedt on April 28, 1940.
She is survived by her son, Dan (Ginny) Untiedt; daughters, Marry (Harry)
Stewart and Kay (Randy) Evers; daughter-in-law Peggy Untiedt; 11 grandchildren,
17 great-grandchildren and a sister, Veronica Roeder; brother Paul (Ferne)
Jones; sisters-in-law, Evelyn Jones and Estella Olson.

EVA E. (Landgraf) BOERNER
Eva E. Boerner, 92, of Odebolt, Iowa,
passed away on Friday, January 26, 2007, at Black Hawk Life Care Center in Lake
View.
Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m., on Wednesday, January 31st, at the
First Presbyterian Church in Odebolt, with Reverend Ken Fells officiating.
Burial followed in the Odebolt Cemetery.
Born January 15, 1915, in Terrill, Iowa, Eva Elizabeth Landgraf was the
daughter of Michael and Annie (Lamaak) Landgraf. Eva grew up in Herring, Iowa,
and attended the Sac County rural school in that area, graduating from the
eighth grade. At an early age she worked for various families in their homes.
Eva was baptized July 13, 1919, in Herring and in 1953 she joined the First
Presbyterian Church in Odebolt.
On December 19, 1935, Eva married Dallas T. Boerner at the Wheatland
Presbyterian Church in Breda, Iowa. One daughter, Lois, was born to this union.
They made their home on several farms in the Odebolt area. In 1959 they retired
from farming and moved to their home in Odebolt. Dallas died January 29, 1990.
Eva was an active partner in farming with her husband. Her greatest
enjoyments were gardening, preserving the produce and sharing with friends. She
took pride in her flowers and working in her yard. Her home and family were
important to her. Eva and Dallas enjoyed fishing, and often went to Minnesota to
fish.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Dallas; three brothers:
Leslie, Francis and Darriel Landgraf: and sister Bernice Landgraf.
Survivors include her daughter, Lois and Burdette Benson of Colorado
Springs, Colorado; one granddaughter, Connie and Gordon Teubner; three
great-granddaughters: Kristin, Kellie, and Kaitlyn Teubner of Centennial,
Colorado; one brother, LaVern and Veda Landgraf of Albert City, Iowa;
sisters-in-law: Viola Landgraf of Denison, Iowa, and Janet Landgraf of Omaha,
Nebraska; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Ralph M. Boerner, age 88, of Odebolt,
Iowa, passed away on Saturday, January 27, 2007, at Horn Memorial Hospital in

Ralph was born on April 22, 1918, on a farm south of Odebolt, the youngest
son of five, born to John and Lena (Roth) Boerner. He was baptized, confirmed
and a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church in Odebolt. Ralph attended
Levey #4 Country School near Odebolt.
On September 8, 1939, Ralph and Bonita Nelson were united in marriage in
Cherokee, Iowa. To this union four children were born: Diane, Gary, Merlin, and
Randy. Ralph’s life was farming, but his love was his family. He was a devoted
and loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother. He especially enjoyed
spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Ralph was active
in softball, loved to go golfing and fishing, and traveling with Bonnie. Ralph
farmed all his life, retiring in 1984, when they moved into Odebolt.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Bonnie, his four children: Diane
Boyer and husband Stan of LaGrange, Illinois, Gary Boerner and wife Diane of
Gowrie, Iowa, Merle Boerner and wife Jean of Ankeny, Iowa, and Randy Boerner and
wife Gail of Newberg, Oregon. Other survivors include his six grandchildren; 12
great-grandchildren; five sisters-in-law; three brothers-in-law; many nieces,
nephews, and extended family members and friends.
Ralph was preceded in death by his parents; and four brothers: Glenn, Earl,
Vern, and Wayne Boerner.

Arlene Gosch, age 70, of Ida Grove,
formerly of Odebolt, Iowa, died Sunday, January 7, 2007, at Morningside Rehab &
Care Center in Ida Grove.
Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 10, 2007, at
Westminster Presbyterian Church in Ida Grove, Iowa, under the direction of
Christensen-Huffman Funeral Homes. The Reverend Kevin J. Freese officiated,
with burial in the Ida Grove Cemetery.
Born February 13, 1936, in Cherokee, Iowa, Arlene Mabel Gosch was the
daughter of Oscar H. and Mabel Peterson. She graduated from Fairview
Consolidated School in Alta, Iowa, then attended Mankato College. She worked in
Storm Lake at the Recorder's office and at the Federal Land Bank prior to her
marriage to Wayne Gosch on June 6, 1970.
Arlene was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Ida Grove. She
enjoyed needlework and walking.
Survivors include her husband, Wayne; two sons, Michael (Nia) Gosch of
Ankeny, and Jason Gosch of Ames; three brothers, Marvin (Bev) Peterson of Alta,

April 14, 1929, at Salem Reformed Church in rural Odebolt. She became a member
of the Odebolt United Methodist Church on June 9, 1946. Shirley attended Clinton
No. 4 Country School through the eighth grade and graduated from Odebolt High
School in 1946.
On February 28, 1947, Shirley was united in marriage to Donald William
Sykes. Two sons were born to this union: Dennis Ray and Dale Alan. They farmed
for 18 years on the Sykes’ family farm in Crawford County then moved to Odebolt
in December of 1964, and immediately Shirley started working as bookkeeper for
Ray and Dale’s Plumbing and Heating. She was employed at Ritz Paint and Glass
and as clerk at Bill’s IGA and Herb’s Foodland before going to Great Plains
Supply Company as bookkeeper for nearly nine years. Shirley was also employed as
a teller at First Federal Savings and Loan, retiring in 1981.
Shirley was a member of Wheeler Improvement Club since 1947, 50-year member
Order of Eastern Star, ISIS Club, United Methodist Women and Ruth Circle, and
past member of Tri-M’s of the United Methodist Church.
Those left to mourn her passing include her sons: Dennis Sykes and wife
Laura of Kiron, Iowa, and Dale Sykes and wife Joann of Odebolt, Iowa; her
granddaughter Gayle Strom and husband Greg of Storm Lake, Iowa; and grandson
Gary Sykes and wife Jennifer of Kiron, Iowa. Other survivors include her sister
Rita Frahm and husband Jerry of Ida Grove, Iowa; brother Roger Carlberg and wife
Diane of Eagle, Idaho; and sister-in-law Bonnie Carlberg of Leon, Iowa; many
cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Shirley was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and sister who
enjoyed her family and friends, and cherished time spent with her grandchildren,
Gayle and Gary. She enjoyed gardening and playing cards.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Donald on May 16, 1994;
brother Richard Carlberg, and nephew Brent Steuk.

DOROTHY (Reuber) HIGBY
Dorothy R. Higby peacefully slept away
at the Fleur Heights Care Center in Des Moines, IA on January 7, 2007 at age
88. Burial will be in the Odebolt Cemetery with a celebration of her life to be
held at a later date.
Dorothy was born 22 September 1918 on the family farm near Odebolt to Edgar
R. and Drucilla (Freese) Reuber. She enjoyed long-lasting memories of farm life
and attending one-room school houses.
When her father became too ill to farm, the family moved to Odebolt. Her
father died when she was 14 and during high school years she helped with family
income by babysitting and serving as a hired girl. She graduated in 1937.
Dorothy was confirmed in the Presbyterian Church and later served as Sunday
School Secretary.
The marriage of Dorothy and Everett Higby ended in divorce. As a single
mom with two daughters, she worked for Larson's Grocery as clerk and dry goods
buyer. She also worked part-time for the Odebolt Chronicle.
She traveled to Des Moines for specialized spinal surgery and after
recovering moved to Des Moines for better job opportunities. She worked for Dun
and Bradstreet for nearly twenty-five years and was retired when the Collection
Department closed.
An accomplished seamstress, Dorothy made draperies, linens, clothing,
formals, wedding dresses, and historic costumes for family and friends. She
carried on the family tradition and love of quilting using her keen eye for
color, design, and fine hand-stitching.
She loved to garden and to her neighbors was known as "the flower lady".
Her kids and grandkids would always praise her dill pickles. Dorothy loved the
birds and squirrels she fed and the trees surrounding her home. Most of all she
loved her family and friends and gave of herself generously to them and also to
charities. Christmas with family and family reunions were always favorite
events.
Those who will love and cherish her forever are her two daughters, Colleen
Ewing of Forest City and Sandra (and Kyle) McGonigle of Des Moines; two sisters
Grace (and Warren) Long and Helen (and Jim) Schumburg all of Rockford, IA; five
grandchildren and spouses; 16 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren
and a nephew and niece. Her extended family includes one aunt, Genevieve; many
dear cousins and their families; and her friends.
Preceding her in death include her parents; son-in-law, Claude Ewing; aunts
and uncles; more dear cousins and family babies.

Dale Neville, age 78, of
Ida Grove, Iowa, died Saturday, January 20, 2007, at Horn Memorial Hospital in
Ida Grove.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, January 25, 2007, at Faith
Commu
