What is the meaning of the name "Korngiebel?" In contemporary German it has no sensible meaning. "Korn" means "grain" and "a "Giebel" is that part of a roof structure called a "dormer" in English. Perhaps a "Korngiebel" was a dormer through which grain was placed in a barn?
This makes sense, except for the fact that there is no such term in German and no history of such a term. However there is another possibility. "Korn" or "K"rner" also refered to a "dealer in grain." "Giebel," it turns out has several meanings. In Middle High German, "gebel" means "skull," which also was used to refer to the head of an enterprise. So possibly "Korngiebel" comes from that era and means "head grain dealer."
Some family believed the name to be Korngabel, with could mean "grain fork," possible "pitchfork." There is, however, no such word in Germany now, though it could have been a Hessian dialect word in the 19th century. There is also indication that the name in Germany was Korngbel, or Korngiebel.
The Korngiebels were carpet weavers by trade in Germany, according to Lena May Kongabel Benson.
An 1877 map shows "G. Corngabel" as owner of a home in the east end of Little German Valley, Spring Township, 2 mles SE of Elliottsburg and 4 miles SW of Bloomfield Borough. In Perry township, PA, he went by the name George J. Korngabel (or Korngable); both spellings occur in contemporary documents.

Times, 12-17-1886
THE residence of Mr. Geo. Korngable, on Mahoney Ridge, near Elliottsburg,
caught fire Thursday night of last week, about 10 o'clock, and before discovery,
the fire had got so great that scarcely
anything was saved. Two ten dollar gold pieces, several dollars in
silver and a five dollar bill were burned. The gold and silver may be found
yet. The origin of the fire is no known. Mr. Korngable had his house insured
for $250 in the American Company.
[This fire is the reason there are no documents about George or his wife, no family Bible, etc.]
