New Information to Share
Every male in America born between about 1875 and 1900 was required to register for the
WWI draft. (He would have been between 18 and 40 at the time of the War, 1914-1918).
These draft application cards provide a wealth
of information furnished by the man himself, including his first, middle and last name,
his address, his age and birthdate, place of birth, citizenship, race, occupation, name
& address of employer, name & address of next of kin, marital status and number of
dependents. The man's signature is included. On the back of the card his physical
description, such as color of hair & eyes, height, distinguishing scars or marks, etc.
is listed.
Even though the LDS spent years microfilming these cards, they were filed by draft board
rather than county, so they were virtually unsearchable. However, The Friends of the
National Archives took all the cards, separated
them by state and then by county, then alphabetically by name, and filed them back in
their boxes at the NARA (National Archives & Records Administration).
In order to get a copy of the man's draft registration, you only need to know 3 things:
his name, what county he lived in at the time of WWI, and his race. (This is
because the military was segregated at that time).
Send a letter requesting a copy of THE FRONT AND BACK of the draft registration card to:
N.A.R.A.,
Southeast Region,
1557 St. Joseph Ave.,
East Point, Ga. 30344
The actual charge is only $10.00 per name. Include a SASE.
If you want a list of ALL of the men with that surname in that county, (a GREAT way to
connect brothers, uncles, cousins, etc.) ask them to let you know how many there are
first. Include a SASE with your request.
