Funeral of Mrs. Bertha Epps to Be Held Today
 
The funeral services for Mrs. Bertha Epps, 25 years of age of Gadsden, Ala., wife of J. G. Epps, will be held this afternoon at 1 o’clock at the Presbyterian Church of Ila. Interment will follow in the Ila cemetery.
Mrs. Epps died Thursday morning, at 3:30 o'clock at a local hospital, following shortly after an operation. She was a member of a very prominent Madison county family and had many friends in this section.
The deceased is survived by her husband; parents, Mr. And Mrs. John Freeman, of near Ila; six brothers, James, Melvin, Graven, Berlin, Chester and Paul ?, of Madison county, four sisters, Mrs. Eula Fitzpatrick, Mrs. Ella Perry and Mrs. Alfa Bray, all of Madison county, and Mrs. Carrie Harwell.

Meadow Baptist Church. The Rev. Eugene Pettyjohn, pastor of Meadow Baptist Church, Dr. Virgil Edwards, pastor of North Side Baptist Church and the Rev. Malcom Gunnells, pastor of the Baptist Church will officiate. The grandsons and nephews will serve as ball bearers, and please meet at the church at 2:15 p.m. Interment will follow in Meadow Baptist Church Cemetery. Mr. Epps will be at Bridges Funeral Home until 12:45 p.m. Sunday and then will be placed in state at the church for one hour prior to the funeral. The family will be at
the residence, Rt. 1, Comer, Ga. The family request that flowers please be omitted and contributions be made to the Meadow Baptist Church Building Fund.

Funeral services for Wayne Edward Nash, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Nash of Danielsville, will be
conducted from the graveside in New Haven Cemetery by Rev. Worley David this morning at 11 o’clock.
Surviving the little boy, other than his parents, are five sisters, Mrs. J. B. Alewine, Danielsville, Lucy, Patsy, Kay and Martha Nash, all of Danielsville; four brothers, Charlie Lee, Thurmond, Neal and Harold Nash, all of Danielsville; and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Nash, Danielsville.

Jenkins Services are held today
Services for Mrs. Van Jenkins, prominent Madison County woman who died in a local hospital early Thursday, were held this afternoon at 3 o'clock from Union Baptist Church.
Conducting the services were Rev. Thomas Wheeler, pastor of First Methodist Church in Madison, Rev. R. E. Carter, pastor of Union Baptist Church, and Rev. William Cauthen, pastor of Danielsville Methodist Church.
Burial was in Union Cemetery, Bridges Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Grandsons of Mrs. Jenkins were pall-bearers.
She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. J. Grady Gower, LaGrange, and Miss Ruby Jenkins, Danielsville; six sons, J. V. Jenkins, Sr., and H. B. Jenkins, both of Hull, Ruel Jenkins, Daielsville, D. D. Jenkins, Colbert, A. F. Jenkins,
Madison, and L. E. Jenkins, Athens, fifteen grandchildren and five great- grandchildren.
A native and lifelong resident of Madison County, Mrs. Jenkins before her marriage was Cora Lee White, daughter of the Late James and Martha Mitchell White. She was a member of the Danielsville Methodist Church and with her husband celebrated their firty-fourth wedding anniversary before his death some nine years ago. She had resided in the same house for the past 64 years. Mrs. Jenkins was member of one of Madison County's most prominent families. She was 82 years old and had been in failing health for the past three months, though she had been seriously ill for only the past ten days.

Robert T. Kincaid
Kincaid Services set for today
Robert T. Kincaid, well known Colbert resident, died in a local hospital yesterday morning at 3:40 o'clock. Mr. Kincaid was 57 years old and had been ill for several weeks.
Services are to be conducted Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock from Colbert Methodist Church with the pastor, Rev. J. W. Eberhardt, officiating.
Interment will follow in Colbert Cemetery, Bridges Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Serving as pall-bearers will be Ralph Collier, Myron Leard, Richard McLeroy, Oscar Adams, Joe Patton and Coke Hardeman.
Mr. Kincaid is survived by his wife, Mrs. Anna Loftus Kincaid, Colbert; three daughters, Mrs. O. L. Bray and Mrs. E. L. Barbee, both of Colbert, and Mrs. D. E. Fortson, Athens; two sons, I. W. Kincaid and B. B. Kincaid, both of Colbert; three brothers, C. C. Kincaid and W. F. Kincaid, both of Colbert, and James Kincaid, Griffin; six sisters, Mrs. Allie Burrouhgs, Clinton, S. C., Mrs. Cary Faulkner, Athens, Mrs. J. C. Barnette, Mrs. Mike Scoggins, Mrs. Occie Thompson, and Mrs. Heaes Gunnels, all of Colbert, and six grandchildren.
A native of Madison County, Mr. Kincaid had lived in that community all of his life. He was a devoted member of Colbert Methodist Church and took an active role in the Men's Sunday School class. The body will like in state in the church from 2:30 o'clock until the hour for the service.

Joseph R. Bond
Joseph Roy Bond, 88, of LaGrange, died Tuesday, September 19, 2000, at West Georgia Medical Center, LaGrange.
Mr. Bond was born October 20, 1911, in Danielsville. He was a son of the late James Esty and Edna Ardella McGarridy Bond.
Mr. Bond had lived in LaGrange since 1949. He retired from the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Soil Conservation Agri-Services, with 25 years of service, and was a member of the First United Methodist Church of LaGrange where he was active in the Men's Sunday School Class.
Mr. Bond was a 1946 graduate of the University of Georgia and was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II. He was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees (N.A.R.F.E.) and was a former member of the Cattlemen's Association.
Mr. Bond was preceded in death by a step-son, Stephen U. Gay Sr., four brothers, Dr. DeWitt Bond, Dr. Ellis Bond, Leo Bond and Fred Bond, and a sister, Louise Tyner.
Graveside services were held Thursday, September 21, in Shadowlawn Cemetery, LaGrange, with the Rev. Billy Colquitt officiating.
Mr. Bond is survived by his wife, Lucile C. Bond; step-daughter and step-son-in-law, Carol and David Toney, Newnan; step-daughter-in-law, Janice Gay, Hogansville; five step-grandchildren, six step-great-grandchildren and several nieces nephews and cousins.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church of LaGrange in memory of Mr. Bond.

Imogene G. Wilson
Mrs. Imogene Gooch Wilson, 59, of Statham, died Wednesday, September 20, 2000.
A native of Madison County, Mrs. Wilson was a daughter of the late Ora Lee Gooch.
She had been employed with Westinghouse and was most recently a homemaker. Mrs. Wilson was preceded in death by her husband, Welton Wilson.
Funeral services were held Friday, September 22, in the chapel of Bridges Funeral Home, Athens, with Dr. W.H. Ruff officiating. Burial was in Barrow Memorial Gardens.
Survivors include four sons, Michael Anglin, Jefferson, Dwayne Anglin and Tim Anglin, both of Statham, and Wesley Wilson, Braselton; and 10 grandchildren.

Bessie M. Fowler
Mrs. Bessie Mae LaCount Fowler, 80, of Dewy Rose, died Tuesday, September 19, 2000, at Elbert Memorial Hospital, Elberton.
Mrs. Fowler was born October 14, 1919, in Madison County, a daughter of the late William and Amanda Crawford LaCount.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Bowman Church of God. Mrs. Fowler and her late husband, Thomas Haskell Fowler, had been involved in nursing home and children's ministries.
She was preceded in death by three sons, Wayne, Gerald David and Bobby Jason Fowler, and three brothers, Paul, Roy and John Thomas "J.T." LaCount.
Funeral services were held Friday, September 22, at the Bowman Church of God with the Revs. Sammy Cutshall, Leon Suttles and Johnny Stowe officiating. Burial was in Hillcrest Cemetery.
Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Paul Thomas and Carole Fowler, Bowman; one brother, Sam LaCount, Bessemer City, N.C.; two grandchildren, one great-grandchild and a family friend, Malcolm Bowers.

Junior Collins
Junior Collins, 55, of Danielsville, died Friday, September 22, 2000, at Doctors Hospital Burn Center.
Mr. Collins was born January 18, 1945, in Georgia, a son of the late Homer and Vesta Clark Collins.
He was retired.
Funeral services were held Monday, September 25, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce, with Pastor Curtis E. Hammond officiating. Burial was in the Liberty Church cemetery, Danielsville.
Mr. Collins is survived by his wife, Peggy Collins; three brothers, Bill Collins, Cornelia, JC Collins, Commerce, and Troy Collins, Danielsville; and four sisters, Geraldine Dailey, Thelma Lynn and Clara Minish, all of Commerce, and Elsie McClure, Maysville.

Nina L. Kidd
Mrs. Nina Lee Smith Kidd, 87, of Comer, died Sunday, September 24, 2000.
A native of Madison County, Mrs. Kidd was a daughter of the late William Thomas and Nona Carithers Smith.
She was a homemaker and was a member of Meadow Baptist Church. Mrs. Kidd was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd Franklin "Sam Bo" Kidd, a sister, Willie Loue Smith Anthony, and two brothers, Grady Smith and O'dell Smith.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, September 26, at Meadow Baptist Church with the Revs. Joe Dooley and Calvin Coile officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, O'neil and Betty White Kidd, Comer; five sisters, Nora Smith Gray and Mary Smith Scymore, both of Kannapolis, N.C., Lola Smith Kidd, Comer, Velma Smith Adams, Danielsville, and Ruth Smith Hendricks, Lexington; one grandchild, L. Dwayne and Gwen Morris Kidd; and two great-grandchildren, Dawn and Grant Belk and Zachary M. Kidd.

Lee Tillman Westmoreland, 87, of Commerce, died Wednesday, September 20, 2000, at Alzheimer's Care Center.
Mr. Westmoreland was born January 9, 1913, in Georgia.
He had been employed as a fixer.
Funeral services were held Friday, September 22, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce, with Pastor Don Baylock officiating.
Mr. Westmoreland is survived by his wife, Willie Westmoreland; three sons, Johnny Westmoreland and Franklin Westmoreland, both of Commerce, and Clyde Westmoreland, Ila; one daughter, Gail Brown, Commerce; one brother, Otis Westmoreland, Maysville; one sister, Mildred McDonald, Commerce; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Leona M. Hawks
Mrs. Leona McConnell Hawks, 100, of Nicholson, died Sunday, September 24, 2000, at BJC Nursing Home, Commerce.
Mrs. Hawks was born July 3, 1900, in Franklin County. She was a daughter of the late Thomas Crow and Grorgia Moore McConnell.
Mrs. Hawks was a homemaker and a member of New Harmony Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Warren Claud Hawks, and a son, Roger Hawks.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, September 26, at New Harmony Baptist Church with the Rev. Howard Garrison officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include three sons, Harold Hawks, Julian Hawks and Talmadge Hawks, all of Nicholson; four daughters, Cathryn Baird, Hull, Mildred David and Evelyn Haynes, both of Danielsville, and Dorothy Erdman, Athens; one brother, Fred McConnell, Pittsburg, Texas; one sister, Ora Mae Pace, Athens; 23 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren and 21 great-great-grandchildren.

Curtis L. Callaway
Curtis Loyd Callaway, 71, of Watkinsville, died Saturday, October 21, 2000.
A native of Jackson County, Mr. Callaway had lived most of his life in Clarke and Oconee counties. He was a son of the late Cleve and Sindie Helton Callaway.
Mr. Callaway was a U.S. Navy veteran and was a retired welder. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Brewer Callaway.
Funeral services were held Monday, October 23, in the chapel of Bernstein Funeral Home, Athens, with Father John Cotterell officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Blanton Michael Dove, Dub Gabriel, Randy Gabriel, James Gerrin, Jeff Gerrin, Josh Grimes, Norman Paugh, Allen Kim Stephens, Ronnie Williams and Chris Williamson served as pallbearers.
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Kay and Jeff Groover, Watkinsville, and Michelle and David Williamson, both of Hull; two sisters, Dora Mae Beck, Hull, and Sybil Irene Massey, Toccoa; and grandchildren, Donna Rene Bullock, Hilton Head, S.C., Jeffery Tuck Grover II, Watkinsville, and Brittney and Whittney Callaway, both of Hull.

J.C. Watkins
J.C. Watkins, 84, of the Sanford Community, Nicholson, died Tuesday, October 17, 2000.
Mr. Watkins was born in Madison County, a son of the late Bob and Pearl Adams Watkins.
He was a farmer and of the Methodist denomination.
A private memorial service was held Friday, October 20, in the chapel of Brown Funeral Home, Danielsville.
Mr. Watkins is survived by two sisters, Sue W. Dean and Pauline W. Wood, both of Athens; and several nieces and nephews.

William F. Hanley Sr.
William Franklin Hanley Sr., 89, of Nicholson, died Wednesday, October 18, 2000, at BJC Medical Center, Commerce.
Mr. Hanley was a born September 25, 1911, in Franklin County. He was a son of the late John P. and Lettie Mealor Hanley.
Mr. Hanley was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was a retired auto salesman and of the Baptist denomination.
Funeral services were held Friday, October 20, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Revs. Kenneth Dillard and Howard Garrison officiating. Burial was in the New Harmony Baptist Church cemetery.
Mr. Hanley is survived by his wife, Willie Rice Wardlaw Hanley; one son, William F. Hanley Jr., Nicholson; one brother, Doyle Hanley, Commerce; one sister, Ruth Ingram, Commerce; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

George W. McGinnis
George Wesley McGinnis, 76, Jefferson, died Monday, October 23, 2000, at Habersham County Medical Center.
Mr. McGinnis was born April 4, 1924, in Hall County. He was a son of the late Guy Rueben and Nellie Lou Crisler McGinnis.
Mr. McGinnis was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II, and was a retired welder. He was a Mason and a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church.
Graveside services were held Wednesday, October 25, in the Wilson United Methodist Church cemetery with the Rev. Larry Wilbanks officiating.
Survivors include three sons, Greg McGinnis, Jefferson, Mike McGinnis, Winneconne, Wis., and Tim McGinnis, Omro, Wis.; two brothers, Guy McGinnis, Toccoa, and Harold McGinnis, Commerce; two sisters, Lucille Sims, Maysville, and Dorothy Trammell, Pine Mountain; 11 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Gideon International, or to the charity of one's choice.

Genevieve K. Phillips
Mrs. Genevieve Kirk Phillips, 74, of Danielsville, died Wednesday, October 18, 2000, at her residence.
Mrs. Phillips was born in Madison County, a daughter of the late David Hadden and Lethia Jane Crumley Kirk.
She was a retired salesperson with Seymour Shoes, Royston, and was a member of the Evangelical Methodist Church. Mrs. Phillips was also a member of the Madison County Farm Bureau Women's Committee. She was preceded in death by her step-mother, Blanche Kirk, four brothers, Hoyt C., Leonard, Horace and Chandler Kirk, and four sisters, Ruth Adams, Vivian Argo, Marceline Lester and Eleanor Riley.
Funeral services were held Friday, October 20, at Evangelical Methodist Church with the Revs. Tim Peek and Ray Jenkins officiating. Burial was in the Kirk Family Cemetery.
Mrs. Phillips is survived by her husband, Grover Lee Phillips Sr.; son, Grover Lee Phillips Jr., Carrollton; son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy C. and Julie Phillips, Danielsville; daughter and son-in-law, Janet Westbrook, Hull; three brothers, Guy Edwin Kirk, Rondall H. Kirk and Bobby Kirk, all of Danielsville; three sisters, Sue Kirk Abercrombie, Danielsville, Rachel Kirk Hunsinger, Athens, and Jeanette Kirk King, Hull; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Blanche Drake Watkins, 91, Hull, died Thursday, October 19, 2000.
Mrs. Watkins was born in Jackson County, a daughter of the late Elic and Mollie Sears Drake.
She was a homemaker and was a member of Gordon's Chapel United Methodist Church. Mrs. Watkins was preceded in death by her husband, John Willie Watkins, and a daughter, Gwenell Watkins Adams.
Funeral services were held Saturday, October 21, in the chapel of Brown Funeral Home, Danielsville, with the Revs. Robert Passmore and Kenneth Dillard officiating. Burial was in the Gordon's Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery. Dit Powell, Gene McConnell, Harold Gillispie, Brooks Crawford, John Chick and Darrell Allen served as pallbearers.

Mrs. Ruby Lee Ward Sexton, of Danielsville, died Monday, October 23, 2000.
Mrs. Sexton was born July 26, 1911, in Franklin County. She was a daughter of the late John Wesley Ward and Myrtie Fowler Ward.
Mrs. Sexton was a homemaker and was a member of Jones Chapel United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Loyd Sexton, three daughters, Myrtie Lou Ingram, Geraldine McElreath and Shelby Jean Brown, two grandchildren, William Russell Sexton and Robert Dennis McElreath, a brother, Brece Ward, and a sister, Edna Carey.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, October 25, at Jones Chapel United Methodist Church with the Revs. Ray Jenkins, Dennis Kesler and Marvin Coffee officiating. Burial was in the Jones Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery.
Survivors include two sons, Ralph Sexton and Leon Sexton, both of Danielsville; one sister, Vera Bowen, Hartwell; 13 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.

Eunice V. Carr
Mrs. Eunice Virginia Williams Carr, 81, of Commerce, died Sunday, October 22, 2000, at Athens Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Carr was born February 20, 1919, in Bonifay County, Fla. She was a daughter of the late Frank and Meddie Capps Williams.
Mrs. Carr was a homemaker and of the Baptist denomination.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, October 25, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. Kent Cranford officiating. Burial was in Jackson Memorial Gardens, Commerce.

Mrs. Betty Earlene Baird Fleeman, 67, of Jefferson, died Wednesday, February 7, 2001.
A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Friday, February 9, at the First United Methodist Church of Jefferson.
Mrs. Fleeman is survived by children, Cornelius E. Fleeman IV, North Augusta, S.C., Susan E. Tuck, Marietta, Donna L. Williamson, Winder, and Jonathan A. Baird Jr., Winder; sisters, Mattie Lee Baker, Trinity, N.C., Darlene Hembree, Greensboro, N.C., Curtistine Massey-Bruce, Nicholson, and Ester Summers, Bartow, Fla.; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Leavy Collins, 78, of Collins, died Thursday, February 8, 2001, at his residence.
Mr. Collins was a son of Asa Collins. He was a veteran of World War II, having received a Purple Heart while serving in France and North Africa. Mr. Collins was a retired correctional officer for Reidsville Georgia State Prison.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, February 10, in the chapel of Kennedy Morgan Funeral Home, Cobb Town. Burial was in the Conner Baptist Church cemetery, Collins.

Mrs. Georgia Carithers Poole, 99, of College Park, died Thursday, February 8, 2001.
Born in Madison County, Mrs. Poole was a daughter of the late George Matthew and Lula Smith Carithers.
She was retired from Spartinburg General Hospital, where she worked as a nurse for over 40 years, and was of the Baptist denomination. Mrs. Poole was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Coan Poole.
Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, February 10, in Comer Cemetery with the Rev. Stewart Lang officiating.
Mrs. Poole is survived by one sister, Hilda Mason, College Park.

Mrs. Lillie Mae Parson Garrison, 92, of Homer, died Friday, February 9, 2001, at Scenic View Health Care Center, Baldwin.
A native of Banks County, Mrs. Garrison was born January 5, 1909, a daughter of the late Garnett and Minnie Sheridan Parson. She was the wife of the late O.S. Garrison.
Mrs. Garrison was a member of Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by two sons, M.E. "Buster" Garrison Sr. and Herbert D. Garrison Sr., and a granddaughter, Ramona Gar-rison.
Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, February 11, at Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church with the Rev. Phil Ferguson, Jerry Payne and the Rev. Jim McLendon officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include one sister, Rose Jones, Homer; grandchildren, Mack E. Garrison, Herbert "Bo" Garrison Jr. and Donna G. Payne, all of Homer, Paulina G. Casper, Maysville, and Oscar S. Veronica Hughes
Mrs. Veronica "Ronnie" Hughes, 75, of Athens, a native of Grand Fork, N.D., died Monday, February 12, 2001.
Mrs. Hughes was the daughter of the late Joseph and Anna Schinider Deitz and the widow of the late John Frank Hughes.
She worked in the shipyards during World War II and later worked at Thomas Textile Manufacturing for a number of years. Mrs. Hughes had made her home in Athens for the past 55 years and was a member of Unity Christian Church, Maysville.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, February 15, in the chapel of Bridges Funeral Home, Athens, with the Rev. Ray Fumea and Linwood Smith officiating. Burial will be at 4:30 p.m. in the Unity Christian Church cemetery with Minister Dennis Harris officiating. Dorsey Campbell, Wesley Hughes, Cecil Highfield, Mark Chancey, Dough Roskam and Frank Strickland Jr. will serve as pallbearers.
Mrs. Hughes is survived by three daughters, Margaret Chancey, Bethlehem, Cindy Childs, Commerce, and Mary Perry, Hull; three sons, Alan W. Hughes, Athens, Ned Hughes, Watkinsville, and Jeff Hughes, Flowery Branch; one brother, LeRoy Deitz, Frazee, Minn.; 13 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
The family was to have received friends from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and from 2 p.m. until the time of the service on Thursday.

John Henry McElreath, 88, of Danielsville, died Wednesday, February 7, 2001, at Cobb Memorial Hospital, Royston.
Mr. McElreath was born in Hall County on May 6, 1912, a son of the late James "Jim" McElreath and Adda Greenway McElreath.
He was retired from the textile industry, was a farmer and was a member of Friendship Baptist Church. Mr. McElreath was preceded in death by his first wife, Thelma Drake McElreath, two brothers, Martin McElreath and Frank McElreath, and two sisters, Fannie Gentry and Cora Dean.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, February 9, in the chapel of Pruitt Funeral Home, Royston, with the Rev. Dayton Logan officiating. Burial was in the Friendship Baptist Church cemetery.

Mrs. Eulaine A. Campbell Giles, 84, of Danielsville, died Friday, February 9, 2001, at BJC Nursing Home, Commerce.
Mrs. Giles was born in Madison County on August 24, 1916, a daughter of the late Roy Marion and Estelle Rice Campbell.
She was a homemaker and a member of Danielsville Baptist Church. Mrs. Giles was preceded in death by a son, Roy Wayne Giles.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, February 11, in the chapel of Pruitt Funeral Home, Royston, with the Revs. Michael Hudman and Tim Peck officiating. Brandall Mitchell Horne, 55, of Danielsville, died Sunday, February 11, 2001.
A native of Madison County, Mr. Horne was a son of William Claude and Emma Frances Haley Horne.
He was employed as a contractor with Branch Construction and was of the Baptist denomination.
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 14, in the Friendship Baptist Church cemetery with the Rev. Ray Jenkins officiating. Billy T. Burroughs
Billy Tom Burroughs, 66, of Danielsville, died Thursday, February 8, 2001.
A native and lifelong resident of Madison County, Mr. Burroughs was a son of the late Paul A. and Evie L. Mann Burroughs.
He was a U.S. Army veteran and a retiree of Southern Cathodic Protection. Mr. Burroughs was a member of Danielsville United Methodist Church, the AARP, the National Rifle Association and an honorary member of the Georgia Sheriff's Association. He was also a member of the VFW Post 08377 and the American Legion Post #39.
Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, February 12, at Danielsville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Walter Singletary and Bill Brown officiating.
Survivors include two daughters, Shonda L. Rogers and Jennifer L. Tullis, both of Loganville; three sisters, Mary B. Griffeth, Danielsville, Betty B. Zellers, St. Augustine, Fla., and Virginia B. Thomas, Conyers; two grandchildren, Rachel M. Rogers and Gabriella J. Tullis; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Annie Bell Queen Davis, 81, of Statham, died Thursday, August 9, 2001, at Athens Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Davis was a daughter of the late Henry and Anna Fuller Queen. She was retired from R & R Manufacturing Company, with 40 years of service, and was a member of the Statham First Baptist Church. Mrs. Davis assisted the elderly in her community by helping and delivering meals to them.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Davis.

John B. Parker
John Bunyan (J.B.) Parker, 93, of Ellijay, died Friday, August 10, 2001, at Athens Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Parker was born September 16, 1907, in Gilmer County, a son of the late Milford and Mary Jane Weaver Parker. He was married to the late Opal Pettit Parker.
Mr. Parker taught school in a one-room schoolhouse with seven grades and worked for the Soil Conservation Service. He was active in Tickanetley Primitive Baptist Church, where he served as clerk and deacon for 60 years.
Mr. Parker was preceded in death by a daughter, Helen Parker Moore.
He will be remembered for the contributions he made to improving the community and expanding the vision of those he taught, family members stated.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, August 12, at Tickanetley Primitive Baptist Church with Elders Edward Cagle, Lawrence Mooney and Paul Mooney officiating. Singing was presented by the church choir. Burial was in the church cemetery. Jack Chandler, Terry Chandler, Rodney Chandler, Phillip Parker, Hassel Parker Jr. and Adam Parker served as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Cynthia Childs, Linda Lamb, Karen Griffin, Denise Edwards, Danita Johnson, Cheryl Lundquist, Janet Wozniak and Lydia Parker.

Allen Bond Morgan, 76, of Commerce, died Tuesday, August 7, 2001, at his residence.

He was retired from the City of Commerce Public Works Department and was a member of Bold Spring United Methodist Church and the Bold Spring Men's Club. Mr. Morgan was preceded in death by his first wife, Annie Bell Morgan, and two brothers, Hutcherson and James Morgan.

Janie Morrison
Mrs. Janie Morrison, 60, of Comer, died Friday, November 2, 2001, of an extended illness.
A native of Jackson County, Mrs. Morrison was the daughter of the late Texas and Evelyn Silman Hargrave.
She was a disabled, retired registered nurse. Mrs. Morrison was preceded in death by a daughter, Alicia R. Morrison.
Hospice chaplain Mike Mims conducted graveside services at 2 p.m. Sunday, November 4, in the Wesley Chapel Community Church cemetery. Mrs. Morrison's primary care nurse, Karen Gordon, gave the eulogy. Interment beside her daughter followed.
Mrs. Morrison is survived by an uncle and aunt, Clarence and Grace Silman, Augusta; aunt, Bertha Silman, South Carolina; son, Leo Pete Morrison Jr., and his wife, Michelle, and their son, Jordan, Comer; and a stepson and family, Hanahan, S.C. She is also survived by many close friends, including the Annie Lee Beck family and the Kerry and Lisa Hill family. Lisa was her loving caregiver for the last few months.

Mrs. Turbeville was born in Athens. She was a graduate of Madison County High School and was a Dean's List student at Truett McConnell College. Mrs. Turbeville was a homemaker and attended Hull Baptist Church.

She was a homemaker and was of the Pentecostal Holiness faith. Mrs. Thomas was preceded in death by a son, William B. Shelton Jr.

James A. Gilreath
James Alvin Gilreath, a resident of Pocataligo, Madison County, for most of his life, died Monday, October 29, 2001.
Mr. Gilreath was born February 17, 1930, in Cleveland, White County. He was the son of the late Andy B. and Ruth Davis Gilreath.
Mr. Gilreath served in the U.S. Navy and was a retired steel worker for several years with American Monorail in Georgia, Tennessee and the Carolinas. He was of the Holiness denomination.
Mr. Gilreath was preceded in death by a daughter, Carol Gilreath, an infant grandson and a brother, Johnny R. Gilreath.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, October 31, in the chapel of Ralph Buckner Funeral Home, Cleveland, Tenn., with the Rev. Raymond Duncan officiating. Music was presented by Helen Doffee and Doyle Mayton. Burial was in Hamilton Memorial Gardens, Chattanooga, Tenn.
Mr. Gilreath is survived by his wife, Orlene Powers; daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Chuck Burger; grandson, Chas Burger; brothers, Roy R. Gilreath and Clyde H. Ms. Betty Lou Brown, 51, of Anderson, S.C., died Saturday, October 27, 2001.
A native of Mercer, Pa., Ms. Brown was the daughter of Ethel Nelson Marstellar and the late Randall Marstellar.
She was a member of Comer Baptist Church and worked for U.G.A. Ms. Brown was an administrative assistant for Howell & Mitchell Investment, Athens, for five years and was presently employed as an administrative assistant with Gunter Investment, Anderson, S.C.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, November 2, at Comer Baptist Church with the Rev. Stewart Lang officiating. Burial was in the Vineyards Creek Baptist Church cemetery. Jason Brown, Jeff Spratlin, Tony Lundy, John Smith, Zach Smith and Joseph Smith served as pallbearers.

Marshall C. Cauthen Jr., 79, of Winterville, died Sunday, October 21, 2001.
A native of Clarke County, Mr. Cauthen was the son of Mary A. Cauthen, Winterville, and the late Marshall C. Cauthen Sr.
He was retired from the University of Georgia and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Mr. Cauthen was a member of Center Methodist Church and a member of the Winterville Civitan Club.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 3, in the chapel of Lord & Stephens Funeral Home, East, Athens, with the Rev. Sanford Willard officiating. Burial was in the Winterville Cemetery. Members of the Winterville Civitan Club, along with Ed Fleeman, served as pallbearers.

Mrs. Barbara N. Poole, 67, of Commerce, died Thursday, November 1, 2001, at her residence.
Mrs. Poole was born February 8, 1934, in Anderson County, S.C. She was a daughter of the late Grady Henry and Elise Christina Miles Nichols.
Mrs. Poole was a retired emergency management coordinator for Gwinnett County and was a member of New Salem United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Banks County Planning Commission.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, November 4, at New Salem United Methodist Church with the Rev. Don Scott officiating. Burial was in the Poole Family Cemetery, Commerce.

Kasey Marie Leachman, infant daughter of Walter Leachman and Sherry Embrick, Hull, died Thursday, May 23, 2002, at Athens Regional Medical Center following a brief illness.
Kasey was born January 21, 2002, in Clarke County.

George Paul Anglin, 72, of Colbert, died Saturday, May 25, 2002.
Born in Madison County, Mr. Anglin was a son of the late Waymon Elmer and Ella Louise Hunsinger Anglin.
He had been employed with Westinghouse and was a member of Macedonia Holiness Church.

Mrs. Ruth Adams, 72, of Hull, died Sunday, May 26, 2002.
A native of Madison County, Mrs. Adams was a daughter of the late Clifford Melvin and Vella Gooch Bradley.
She was employed as a greeter with Wal-Mart at Banks Crossing and was a member of Gordon’s Chapel United Methodist Church. Mrs. Adams was preceded in death by her husband, Orin “Big” Adams.

James A. Scogin
James Allen “Black Racer” Scogin, 60, of Colbert, died Thursday, May 23, 2002.
A native of Madison County, Mr. Scogin was the son of Robert Scogin and the late Mary Louise Carter Scogin. He was the grandson of the late Robert “Bill” and Annie Louise Goss Scogin and the late Harvey and Ester Carter. Following the death of his mother, Mr. Scogin was raised by his aunt, Azilee Nation.
He was an electrician and was of the Baptist denomination. Mr. Scogin also raced cars on dirt tracks and was very involved with his grandson’s racing team, JSR.
“He was loved and respected by all,” said family members.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 25, in the chapel of Lord & Stephens Funeral Home, Madison Chapel, with the Rev. Albert Vaughn officiating. Burial was in the Kirk-Scogin Family Cemetery, Colbert. Shaun Hardman, Jason Elrod, Scott Lance, Michael Scogin, Ronnie Scogin and Keith Thompson served as pallbearers.

Claude Argentine Vinson, 65, of Commerce, died Sunday, May 26, 2002, at Athens Regional Medical Center following a brief illness.
A native of Madison County, Mr. Vinson was born January 9, 1937. He was a son of Ruby Jarrells Vinson, Commerce, and the late George Vinson.
Mr. Vinson was a retired retail businessman, having worked with a grocery store. He was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses, Jefferson.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 30, at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses with Minister Donald Christoff officiating. Burial will be in Tabor Chapel Cemetery, Ila.

Mrs. Nettie Sue Moore, 89, of Nicholson, died Monday, May 27, 2002, at BJC Medical Center, Commerce.

She was a homemaker and was a member of Antioch United Methodist Church. Mrs. Moore was preceded in death by her husband, Jessie James Moore.

Jack W. Worley, 71, of Hoschton, died Wednesday, May 22, 2002, at Gwinnett Medical Center.

Homer Mayor Leon M. Ray, 62, of Homer, died Tuesday, May 28, 2002, at Emory Hospital, Atlanta.
A native of Banks County, Mr. Ray was the son of Jimmie Pritchett Ray, Homer, and the late Ottis Ray.
Mr. Ray was a member of Homer Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army and was a member of the Georgia Mountain Development Committee and a member of the Banks County Cattleman’s Association.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 30, at Homer Baptist Church with the Revs. Charles Crabbe and Jerry Stowe officiating. Burial will be in Banks Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Wray was employed with the Oglethorpe County School System and was a member of Crawford Baptist Church.

Mrs. Betty Moseman Lunsford, 74, of Hull, died Monday, April 9, 2001.

Claude J. McCurdy Jr.
Claude Johnson "Mac" McCurdy Jr., 87, formerly of Chamblee and Danielsville, died Tuesday, April 10, 2001, at Christian City Convalescent Center of complications from Alzheimer's Disease.
Mr. McCurdy was born January 26, 1914, in Banks County, the fourth of seven children, to Blonnie Chambers McCurdy and Claude J. McCurdy Sr.
He spent most of his working years in the paint manufacturing industry. Mr. McCurdy was an entrepreneur who founded Maxi-Kote Paint Company and Mercury Spray Equipment in Chamblee, where he lived with his family for 30 years.
He was a devoted member of the Lions Club and served in various positions on the board. Mr. McCurdy was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Chamblee, and later Jones Chapel United Methodist Church, Danielsville.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Rosemary Speir McCurdy, his oldest son, C.J. McCurdy III, a grandchild, a brother, and a sister.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 12, at at H.M. Patterson & Son Oglethorpe Hill Chapel, Atlanta. Burial will be in North Atlanta Memorial Park.
Mr. McCurdy is survived by his wife, Lyla Bennett McCurdy, Union City; daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Glenn Jones, Norcross, and Margaret and Ernest Saunders, Hoschton; son and daughter-in-law, William and Anita McCurdy, Daytona Beach, Fla.; step-daughter and son-in-law, Kim and Steven Ekstrom, Paris, Texas; sisters, Monteen Winkleman, LeHigh Acres, Fla., and Blondine Andrews, Rainesville, Ala.; brothers, William McCurdy, Braselton, and George Wesley McCurdy, Royston; 13 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Christian City Convalescent Center in Union City, Ga., or to the Alzheimer's Association.
The family was to have received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at H.M. Patterson Oglethorpe Hill Chapel, located at 4550 Peachtree Road.

Thelma D. Lewallen
Mrs. Thelma Duncan Lewallen, 92, of Homer, died Friday, April 6, 2001, at BJC Nursing Home, Commerce.
A native of Banks County, Mrs. Lewallen was born January 25, 1909, a daughter of the late Alvin and Hattie Bray Duncan.
She was a homemaker and a member of Homer Baptist Church. Mrs. Lewallen was preceded in death by her husband, Cliff Lewallen, and a daughter, Doris Tucker.
Graveside services were held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, April 8, in Banks Memorial Gardens, Homer, with the Revs. Jim McClendon and Jerry Stowe officiating.
Survivors include one son, Bobby Lewallen, Homer; one brother, Hoyt Duncan, Commerce; three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

James R. Casper
James Roy Casper, 71, of Athens, a native of Barrow County, died Sunday, June 17, 2001.
Mr. Casper had lived in the Athens-Clarke County area for most of his life and was retired from Cartey Electric Motor Services.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Syble Casper Shelton, and two brothers, Victor E. Casper and Robert F. Casper.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 19, in the chapel of Bridges Funeral Home, Athens, with the Rev. Leon Pass officiating. Burial was in Whitworth Cemetery. Melvin Cheek, Travis Ingram, Marty Casper, Richard Gordon, Bobby Ramsey, Keith Cartey, Jonathan Casper and Steven Casper served as pallbearers. Members of The Dirty Dozen Hunting Club served as honorary pallbearers.

Ellie M. Tucker
Mrs. Ellie Merle Tucker, 90, of Athens, died Sunday, June 17, 2001.
A native of Madison County, Mrs. Tucker was born August 7, 1910, a daughter of the late Luther and Cora Allen Ginn.
She was a former school teacher in Madison County during the 1930s and was a member of the First Christian Church of Athens. Mrs. Tucker was active in Brownie and Girl Scouts as a leader, as well as the Cub and Boy Scouts.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Homer Allen Tucker.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 19, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with Minister Jerry Payne officiating. Burial was in the Harmony Christian Church cemetery. Leonard Ginn, Joe Ginn and Mike Lacey served as pallbearers. Mrs. Tucker's nephews, Boyd Drake, Coley Lacey, Dennis Drake, Ricky Dalton and Dr. Sam Vickery, served as honorary pallbearers, along with friends, Donald Cofer and George Hart.
Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Sid and Karen Tucker, Granbury, Texas; daughter and son-in-law, Pat Tucker Garrison and Billy Garrison, Commerce; grandchildren, Sidney L. Tucker Jr., Rowlett, Texas, Thomas Lloyd Allen Tucker, Augusta, Kan., Joe Allen Tinsley Jr., Valdosta, and Patricia Ann Tinsley, Atlanta; and a great-grandson, Sidney L. Tucker III, Wichita, Kan.

William Frasier Childers, 84, of Greenville, S.C., died Wednesday, June 13, 2001.
Born in Oglethorp County, Mr. Childers was a son of the late Walter David and Minnie E. Patton Childers. He was the husband of the late Mildred E. McCarty Childers.
Mr. Childers was a carpenter with Cothran Sims & Barker Builders and was a member of Washington Avenue Baptist Church. He was also a member of Woodmen of the World.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 15, in the chapel of Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Northwest. Burial was in Graceland Cemetery, West.

James W. Eberhart
James Walter Eberhart, 77, of Athens, died Saturday, June 16, 2001.
A native of Colbert, Mr. Eberhart was a son of the late Hoyt Adam Eberhart and Mae Willie Burroughs Eberhart.
He was the retired owner of Eberhart Television Repair Service and was a member of Forest Heights Baptist Church. Mr. Eberhart was a veteran of World War II, serving in Company A of the 133rd infantry, where he fought in the European theater and was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star.
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 18, in Evergreen Memorial Park with the Rev. Mike Purdy officiating.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Ida Mae Burgess Eberhart; four daughters, Carol Slay, Winterville, Linda Iza, Bogart, Diane Brewer, Crawford, and Janice Sand, Athens; two sons, Jim Eberhart, Athens, and Steve Eberhart, Bishop; three sisters, Dot Brewer, Athens, and Mary Carter and Louise Campbell, both of Fairburn; 10 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Joseph S. Eterno
Joseph Sebastian Eterno, 80, of Homer, died Saturday, June 16, 2001, at his residence.
Born February 8, 1921, in Wayne County, Mich., Mr. Eterno was the son of the late Vincent William and Frances Nazione Eterno.
He was a retired locksmith and was a member of St. Catherine Labouré Catholic Mission. Mr. Eterno was also a member of the American Legion, Gainesville Lodge #219 F&AM and the Fraternal Order of Police.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 19, at St. Catherine Labouré Catholic Mission with Father Richard Tibbits officiating.
Mr. Eterno is survived by his wife, Mary Lois Jones Eterno, Homer; one son, Vincent Eterno, Homer; three daughters, Rose Adams, Maysville, Jenifer Perry Hinson, Cornelia, and Francine Salbatore, Armada, Mich.; two sisters, Jennie Pernicano, San Diego, Calif., and Frances Turner, New Baltimore, Mich.; and 13 grandchildren.

Mrs. Oeline Strickland Bridges, 53, of Danielsville, died Thursday, June 14, 2001, at her residence.
Born in Madison County, Mrs. Bridges was a daughter of the late Obediah and Kathleen Alewine Strickland.
She was employed as a dieti-tian with Ila Elementary School.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Bridges was preceded in death by a brother, Leon Strickland.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 16, in the chapel of Pruitt Funeral Home, Royston, with the Rev. David Strickland officiating. The Rev. Jarrett E. McClain, 75, of Colbert, died Thursday, June 14, 2001.
A native of Clarke County, Mr. McClain was a son of the late James Frank and Odessa Brooks McClain.
He was a World War II veteran and was a retired minister. Mr. McClain was a member of the First Apolistic Church of Bishop.
He was preceded in death by a son, Jerry Kenith McClain.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 16, in the chapel of Bridges Funeral Home, Athens, with the Revs. Curtis Lee Hammond and G. Hubert Hammond officiating. Mrs. Frances Dora Benton, 80, of Colbert, died Saturday, June 16, 2001.

Albert Millard Wilson, 80, of Athens, died Tuesday, June 19, 2001.
Born in Washington County, Tenn., Mr. Wilson was a son of the late Charlie Wilson and Rachael Rice Wilson.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was owner of Wilson T.V. & Appliance Co. Mr. Wilson was of the Methodist denomination.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Minnie Lee McGalliard Wilson, and a son, John Albert Wilson.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 21, in the chapel of Lord & Stephens Funeral Home, West, with the Rev. Randy Crowe officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park.

Bobby Dwight "Bird" Stephenson, 42, of Commerce, died Saturday, June 16, 2001.

Mr. Stephenson was employed with Roper Pump Company. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Johnnie Sue and Odell Stephenson.

MAYSVILLE - Ed Woods, 70, died Friday, February 9, 2001, at BJC Medical Center, Commerce.
Mr. Woods was born April 22, 1930, a son of the late John and Maude Strickland Woods.
He had been employed with the State of Georgia as a prison guard.

Mrs. Louise P. Boswell, 71, Commerce, died Tuesday, November 6, 2001.
Mrs. Boswell was born in LaFrance, S.C., a daughter of the late Clifford and Quida Ramsey Pitts.
She was a homemaker and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Commerce. Mrs. Boswell was preceded in death by a daughter, Sheila Jewell.
