To the Honorable Superior Court of said County.
The Petition of James Mathews of said County respectfully that on the twelfth day of June in the year of our Lord Eighteen hundred and forty two years petitioner and Nancy Eleanor League of said County, then a single woman were married -- --- --- of Law to --- in the county aforesaid. And your petitioner further states that he entered into the Holy State of Matrimony with the said Nancy E. under circumstances which promised the realization of that comfort which is to be found in virtuous wedlock. The good name and virtuous demeanor of the said Nancy E. forbade the --------- expectation of her ----- wicked and unlawful conduct as herein after mentioned and her pursuit fallen and orphaned condition. Your petitioner and his said wife, said Nancy E. had lived together from the time of their marriage aforesaid until within a few days of the time of their separation as hereafter mentioned in peace and comfort. Without the least suspicion whatever on the part of your petitioner that the said Nancy E. could possibly be ------- by any means whatever to commit the odious crime of Adultery and thereby entail disgrace and shame upon herself, your Petitioner and the offspring of said marriage.
And your petitioner avers that he could not and would not have suspected or believed until the painful reality broke in upon him demonstrated her infidelity. That Nancy E. could have been guilty of any such infamous crime against both the laws of God and Man. Your petitioner avers that it was his constant and steady object to render his said Wife comfortable and happy and to support his Wife in a dedicated respected way which he accomplished to the best of his ability. Your petitioner was ever affectionable

and kind to his said wife during the time aforesaid and she never had the least cause to suspect him of a want of perfect fidelity with respect to any of his marital obligations. And your petitioner all that time hoped and believed that whatever might be his condition in relation to other things he would have comfort and ---------in the --------------- affections of his said wife.
But as it is that the said Nancy E. forgetful of her obligations to your petitioner, on the fifteenth day of August in the year of our Lord Eighteen Hundred and Fifty One yielded to the Carnal and seduction --------- of one Thomas Brannon and then after being seduced by the said Thomas Brannon she freely and voluntarily permitted said Thomas Brannon to have carnal knowledge of and sexual intercourse with her the said Nancy E and then and there and on divers (various) days and times afterwards and before the suing of this unit she committed the crime of adultery the said Thomas Brannon and during the time aforesaid She the said Nancy E. committed repeated acts of adultery and thusly broke her solemn marriage obligations made and entered into upon her under marriage with your petitioner as aforesaid and thusly disgraces herself and destroyed the peace and happiness of your petitioner. Your Petitioner further avers - that heretofore to with; on the Seventeenth day of August in the year of our Lord Eighteen Hundred and fifty one the said Nancy E. wife of your petitioner as aforesaid willfully and without any cause whatever deserted and abandoned retiuo furio, ran away and left your petitioner
And had continued furio that ----- until the suing out of this unit so deserted and absent from your petitioner for the space of ---- years and still continued and now continues so described and absent as aforesaid.

Therefore your petitioner prays that cita----- may issue div------- and re---------- said Nancy E. Mathews wife of your petitioner to lie and appear personally or by attorney at the next Superior Court to be held in and for said County. Then and there to show cause (if any she can) why said marriage entered into as aforesaid - should not be annulled and made void for the causes aforesaid and a Divorce a Vinculo matrimony ic be pronounced between your petitioner and his said wife Nancy E. Mathews.
And your petitioner will ever pray --
