Robert Bascom Brooks, 49, died suddenly at his residence, 1927 North Broad St., at 12:30 Sunday morning following an attack suffered a few moments earlier. Mr. Brooks had not been well for several years, but had continued to be active until his death Sunday. He was born in Rome November 15, 1904, son of the late Henry B. and Mary Ellinor Brooks and had spent his entire life here. For a number of years he operated his own grocery store but for the past nine years he had been associated with the Colonial Stores. He served in World War II as an X-ray technician in the U.S. Army. Mr. Brooks was a member of the North Rome Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his father Henry B Brooks, May 14, 1952, and by two brothers, R. C. Brooks, a former Rome city commissioner, Dec. 24, 1951 and H. Quincy Brooks May 28, 1954. Surviving Mr. Brooks is the widow, the former Velma Headrick to whom he was married August 12, 1942; one daughter, Miss Eleanor Brooks; one son, Henry Brooks, all of Rome; one step-daughter, Mrs. M. B. MaHaffey of Green Cove Springs, Fla.; one sister, Mrs. H. B. Crutchfield of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; one granddaughter, Miss Cindy MaHaffey of Green Cove Springs, Fla. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the chapel of Jennings Funeral Home with the Rev. Clyde Lee, pastor of the North Rome Methodist Church officiating. Interment will follow in the family lot in Oakland Cemetery. The body will lie in state at the residence until time for the funeral services and pallbearers are requested to meet there at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. They are Clyde and Walt Baker, Cliff Fowler, Julian Payne, Calvin Owens, and Johnny Yarbrough. Honorary pallbearers are requested to meet at Jennings Chapel at 1:45 p.m. and include Cliff Eakers, Winston Freeman, Cliff Brown, Griffin Rush, Taff Pruett, Herbert Carwile, Henry Stewart, and Hill Yarbrough.
