Addl Information provided by Rev. Jerome K. Drakeford on 2/16/2006 -

The Founders/Organizers: Rev. Berry Austin & Deacon Zachary

Pastors: Rev. Grisson, Rev. W. B. Bell, Rev. W.W. Thomas, Rev. Gare, Rev. A. S. Austin, Rev. E. A. Hargrove, Rev. K. J. Johnson, Rev. H. M. Alexander, Rev. A.G. Henley, Rev. W. M. Covington, Rev. H. Strickland, Rev. Robert Redding, Rev. Jerome Dukes, Rev. B. J. Clark, Rev. D. L. Dennis, and our current Pastor, Rev. Jerome K. Drakeford.

The original site of the church is located just across the street from the present church building and is now the cemetery.  Flint Ridge Baptist Church  is one of the oldest African American Churches in Fayette County. It was originally established by African Americans. Rev. Drakeford says there are some old church records on file at the church, including photos.  There is a photo of one of the original founders - Rev. Berry Austin. Rev. Drakeford provided the following information on the church history -

According to our records the following information is hereby provided:

The Church was organized in 1866 as Flint Ridge Baptist Church by Rev. Berry Austin & Deacon Zachary. Services started under an old Bush Arbor until a building was erected with a stronger foundation. In 1941 the Highway Department decided to build a new highway (GA Highway 85), this road would run through the property of Flint Ridge. This meant the church had to relocate. The church purchased land across the street from the Late Deacon C. B. Butler and built another sanctuary. In 1955 the present sanctuary was erected.

We have graves in our Cemetery dating back to the 1800's. There's much more history involved in the 140 years of this ministry as well as families whose backgrounds are rooted in it's history. What I provided is a brief overview. Thanks, Rev. Jerome K. Drakeford, Pastor.

Flint River Baptist Church

The first mention I have found of this church is in the 1827 Minutes of the Flint River Baptist Association.

The delegates to this Association meeting held at Sardis in Pike County, GA in October of 1827 were Robert M. Sims and Thomas Glenn. The church reported 79 members.

According to A History of the Flint River Baptist Association, 1824 - 1974 by Harold Elston Graham, Sr., Flint River Baptist Church is listed as being in Fayette County in 1825 (Possibly known as Leakville Baptist Church) - Clayton County, GA - became Jonesboro in 1868.

In Clayton County, 1945.  From Pg. 162 - "The original Flint River Baptist Church was constituted in 1825 and located ten miles northeast of Fayetteville.  Now affectionately known as First Baptist Church of Jonesboro."  Also - pg. 132 - Lists R. G. Jones as pastor of Flint River, 1945-47.  The 1945 Book of Minutes lists Flint River as a new church, with messengers John Mann and Mrs. R. G. Jones.  It was listed in the Jonesboro District.  The 1946 minutes list the year of origin as 1941, Pastor R. G. Jones, College Park, GA.; meets the 2nd and 4th Sundays, membership 35; John Mann as Sunday School Superintendent with average attendance of 25;  Emma Lee Dees of Riverdale, GA as treasurer; pastor's salary was $42.51.

Do you know anything about this church?  Was it absorbed into another county?  Was it closed at some point - was it's name changed?

J. F. Tharp & Jacob Mercer were listed as delegates to the 1827 Association meeting.

This is one of only a few references I have found to this church but can't find where it was located.  It is mentioned here in September of 1848 and again in October of 1850 and August of 1852.

In addition, see Church Letter of dismission for Davy Cook in 1829.

According to A History of the Flint River Baptist Association, 1824 - 1974 by Harold Elston Graham, Sr., Salem is listed in the Flint River Association Minutes as being in Fayette County in 1827; in Crawford County in 1828; in Spalding County in 1854; in Monroe County in 1861and in Henry County in 1874.

Records Available at Georgia Baptist History Depository, Special Collections, Jack Tarver Library, Mercer University, Macon, Georgia - Box CH 4 and Reel 891: CB, 1827-1854  - According to their website Salem was established in 1827 and Extinct in 1854 and was originally established in Henry County and was later in Fayette County.

Do you know anything about this church?  From this new information found at the Jack Tarver Library website, the one mentioned above as being in Monroe in 1861 and Henry in 1874 are not the same church.  I am guessing the Crawford County one mentioned in 1828 is not it either but the one mentioned in Spalding in 1854 could be the same church.  This would definitely narrow down it's original location as we know the area that was originally Henry, then Fayette, then Spalding.
