Barrow County was formed in 1914 (one book says 03 NOV, another
says 14 JUL) from portions of Jackson, Gwinnett and Walton Counties.

The county was named for David Crenshaw Barrow who was a Professor at The University of Georgia.
From 1907 to 1925 he served as chancellor of the University of Georgia.

The Barrow County area was actually settled prior to the start of the 19th century Indian named 'Umausauga'
who lived in a village called Snodon, invited the white men to stay in 1786 after they gave him a gift of fish hooks.
In those days, Winder was called 'Jug Tavern' and Commerce was named 'Groaning Rock.'
