In 1996, a group of genealogists organized the Florida GenWeb Project, modelled after a project originally started in the state of Kentucky. The idea was to provide a single entry point for all counties in Florida, where collected databases and information on genealogy in the state could be stored. At the same time, volunteers were found who were willing to coordinate the collection of data.

The Florida GenWeb Project needs your help. We are from time to time needing county sponsors. There's really nothing to it. You are not responsible for doing lookups, and don't even have to live in the county you sponsor. Take a look at the Florida County list for the unsponsored counties, located at the History and genealogy home page, or e-mail your questions to the state coordinator.  One last note, county sponsors are not the only volunteer positions.  If you'd like to assist with doing look-ups, census or tombstone transcriptions, these are a few of the other volunteer positions we are always in need of.  Put a little back to the place that has brought you so much.

Lafayette County was created December 23,1856 from part of Madison County, and included at the time what is now both Lafayette and Dixie Counties. Lafayette County was named in honor of the Marquis de Lafayette, the French citizen who rendered assistance to the colonies during the Revolutioary War. The famed Suwannee River forms the entire eastern boundary. The county courts first met at the home of Ariel Jones near Fayetteville. The county seat was moved from to Mayo from New Troy in 1893, and Mayo is currently Lafayette's only incorporated town. In 1921 the lower part of of the county was carved off and created into Dixie County. As other information becomes available, I will provide a link to Archive, Genealogy and Historical information as it becomes available. This information shall include photographs. Anyone having any information that is not copyrighted or if copyrighted and a release can be obtained I will include such information on the links.

As you can see, I've condensed this page and did away with the slow loading graphics and icons.  This will make the page to load quicker and easier to navigate.  I solicit your genealogy information, if you have data you'd like to share and only have it in rough draft, I have a daughter who's all the time wanting to improve her typing skills.  So not only will you be able to provide information, but you'll receive back a finished copy of your original draft works.
