For those of you who have been waiting for the last minute and the last Final Deadline, it is very near.

Any one may submit a family story at no cost. Guidelines for submission may be obtained by contacting any committee member.

While we would like for everyone that submits a story, to purchase a finished book, no purchase is necessary to have your story included.

    Hubert Grady Roberts
    WW II Veteran

Grady was born January 5, 1913 in Winfield, Fayette County, Alabama. He moved to Jackson County, Florida, with his parents, Stept C. and Elzie Jane Roberts, when he was a young boy. His life would be cut short by a Nazi bullet, at the age of 31

Life here was peaceful, and though families struggled to keep their farms going, through those hard times, this was an idyllic place for young boys to grow up. There were creeks and rivers to swim and fish in, and woods filled with game to hunt. Occasionally his family would take a trip to the Gulf of Mexico, and this took many days traveling in a wagon. Grady, being the oldest child, would walk the outer perimeter of the "road", hunting for game for the evening meal, to be cooked on their campfire. Once they reached the Gulf, they would spend a few days, fishing and picking up oysters, and begin their trip back home.

Then came the horror of WWII. Grady enlisted and after his training in Ft. Benning, Georgia, he was sent to Europe to fight Hitler's Nazi Army. While in England, he did get a few days off for a furlough and went to see London. In one of his last letters home, to his father, he wrote about this amazing city, and that the price of whiskey was $16.00 a quart! This was unbelievable to a "country boy" who probably "brewed" his own liquor at home. But it was a thrill to see such a famous town.

Soon, he was sent to France for the Invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944. Miraculously, he survived the beachhead landing, where thousands of men were shot down by the Germans, who were barricaded on the cliffs above the beach. In his last letter home on July 10, 1944, he wrote that the weather was still so cold in France , that the soldiers were having to wear their wool underwear, a strange idea for a Florida lad!

He continued fighting to liberate France, and pushing the Germans back across their own border. He served his country honorably and gave his all. Grady was killed on July 27, 1944. He is buried at the American Cemetery in St. Laurent sur mer, France. He was awarded the distinguished Purple Heart posthumously on October 21, 1944 for his sacrifice in defense of his country.
