Sept. 1831 2 CONT By Charles L. Bookout 2 CONT 2 CONT We have assembled to day for the purpose of relating to each other an 2 CONT account of the various cases of disease which we have treated according 2 CONT to our System of practice and to consult together on the important 2 CONT Subject of discharging our duties to the Sick, believing that our 2 CONT conversations will be both pleasant and profitable; that new truth may 2 CONT thereby be discovered, and the interests of our noble cause advanced to 2 CONT the mutual Satisfaction and improvement of all. 2 CONT 2 CONT We have a Short and a complete System of practice well adapted to the 2 CONT capacities of the common people. With a small expense and a brief Study 2 CONT any man of common Sense may easily become his own physician and thus 2 CONT Secure the health restoring aid of our remedies with perfect safety. Man 2 CONT is composed of the elements, his body being earth, as declared by his 2 CONT creator in the words, "dust thou art and unto dust shalt return." It is 2 CONT certain that Fire, air, earth, and water breathe component parts of the 2 CONT human system, even admitting these materials to be compounds, as taught 2 CONT by modern chemists. Earth and water compose the Solid, fire and air the 2 CONT fluid of the body. Heat and life exist together and when the vital [page 2 CONT 14] flame is extinguished cold and death invariably Succeed. It is from 2 CONT these facts that Botanic doctors say "Heat is life and cold is death." 2 CONT But there are two things on which life depends, Viz: Food and Medicine. 2 CONT These two articles agree or harmonize with each other: often growing 2 CONT together in the same fields cultivated and used by the Same people. All 2 CONT who are capable of cultivating and preparing wholesome food, may as 2 CONT easily learn to cultivate and prepare wholesome medicines, and heat, and 2 CONT food is a fuel to the fire; it maintains and continues that heat without 2 CONT which no human being or animal can exist. The Stomach is the great center 2 CONT and depository from which the System is warmed and Supported; heat being 2 CONT produced by digestion, or the consuming of the food, the blood is therby 2 CONT renewed, and Sent fresh and hot from the heart to warm and nourish all 2 CONT parts of the body. 2 CONT 2 CONT Unwholesome food does not afford the proper kind of nourishment because 2 CONT it cannot be well digested; hence it produces a foulness which amounts to 2 CONT obstruction. The Stomach, which has been called the fireplace of the 2 CONT System fails to send out the necessary quantity of heat on account of 2 CONT being clogged with a kind of food or fuel which it cannot consume, in 2 CONT consequence of which the appetite fails, the bones ache and the Spell of 2 CONT Sickness or ill health ensues. This condition of the body indicates a 2 CONT need of means or medicine to cleanse the Stomach and bowels of the filth 2 CONT oppressive matter, and at the Same time rekindle the internal heat So 2 CONT that wholesome food can be again digested. All the art required to effect 2 CONT So desirable a change in the system consists in knowing what kind of 2 CONT medicine to give, the mode of preparing it, & Nothing, more is expected 2 CONT than to remove obstructions, and keep up the natural heat, which is in 2 CONT fact all that medicine can do, and it takes the best Sort to do that a 2 CONT Sort furnished by nature alone, and not by a chemist as many have 2 CONT erroneously Supposed. 2 CONT 2 CO
