FORGOTTEN PAST OF ADAMS COUNTY, VOL. II
|
This is a different kind of chapter than any other one in this book, this is about a 101 year old lady named Pam Prentice. Pam was born April 6, 1876 in Cleveland, Ohio. Pam married Jack Smith when she was 26 years old. Jack was a very successful lawyer. Jack had a bad heart and the doctors told him to move to a drier climate, which brought them to Denver. They both weren’t happy about moving to Denver because they would have to sell everything they owned and leave their families. In April of 1911, they started to move but Jack found they had another legal job for him. They built a house they both liked, just north of Denver. Pam and Jack were very happy about moving once they got to Denver because Denver was smaller than Cleveland. Pam said Colorado is much prettier than Ohio. On almost every Sunday Pam and Jack went to the mountains. They would ride the train up in the morning and come back in the evening. When Pam went to town she rode the trolley car. They didn’t own a car because they didn’t like the idea of the car. Pam thought Denver was a nice town to live in even though it wasn’t much at that time. Pam and Jack were only married 10 years when Jack was killed by a gunshot wound in the stomach. The gun was fired by his brother. His brother shot him because he was jealous of him because he loved Pam also. Jack’s brother served 15 years in the state penitentiary. When he got out, he left the country. When this happened, Pam was going to go back home to Cleveland but decided against it because she didn’t have the money. She didn’t like living alone and they didn’t have any children. Pam decided to get a job. She started as a seamstress. She made clothes for the rich people. She did this for three years until she met a man who was the manager of a store by the name of Adam Prentice. They knew each other for about eight months before he asked her to marry him. Pam, at this time, was 39 and he was 42. They lived in the same house that Jack and Pam lived in. Pam and Adam never had any children either. The first time Pam had ever seen a television was in the year of 1954 at Adam’s store, she was very excited. She still calls it a radio box. She didn’t get a telephone until after Adam died. He died at the age of 60 from a heart attack. They were married for 18 years before he died. She has spent the rest of her years at home until she was 98 years old, then to the Columbine Nursing home. Pam Prentice is an elderly lady but she is strong for her age. When she got married to Jack Smith she was 5’5" and now she is 4’9". The only defect that she has is she is almost blind and just a slight loss of memory and hearing. She has seen a lot and we asked her what she thought of the world then and she replied, "It was a lot better than today." She said that she is very bored with life and that she wanted to die. We will hate to see her go but she is almost 102. We don’t want to live that long, not in this world today. Acknowledgments
