| Mary S. Harris published the book Anderson
County Cemetery Records and has graciously granted written
permission to put her work online with the Anderson County Tennessee
Tombstone Project.
The Tennessee Tombstone Project wishes
to thank Mrs. Harris for allowing the transcriptions to go online to aid
genealogical research in the Anderson County, Tennessee region.
Mary S. Harris
The following is the forward from her book:
When I undertook to record all the cemeteries in Anderson County, I did so with the full knowledge of the task before me. I had previously recorded and
published, along with Euline Harris, the cemeteries of Marion County,
Tenn. It is not an easy project, but it was a labor of love. The
experience of meeting many people and the knowledge learned about the
county was very rewarding.
This book contains transcriptions of twenty seven thousand, three hundred, seventy one (27,371) grave markers, in three hundred & ten (310) cemeteries. I
have tried to be as accurate as possible in transcribing, but with so
many cemeteries covered with heavy growth, some stones hand carved,
broken, lying face down etc., there are bound to be errors.
I have used the TVA
Quadrangle Maps as the primary source for locating cemeteries. They are
available from: Mapping Service Branch, Tennessee Valley Authority,
Chattanooga, TN. Aiso from: the Maps and Publication Shoppe, 427 clinch
Ave., Knoxville, TN.
Excluding Oak Ridge,
there are 29 cemeteries shown on these maps with no names. They are
indicated only as Cern. I have located 43 cemeteries not shown on the
maps. Where a cemetery is shown with a name, I have used that name, even
though local residents might know it by another name. For cemeteries
shown with no name, I have inquired with local residents to determine a
name. There are twelve (12) cemeteries for which no one seemed to know
of a name. For these I have listed them as No Name-1, No Name-2 etc.
Likewise when there are more than one cemetery with the same name, I
have numbered them number-1, number-2 etc.
The Addendum contains
Cemeteries located, and additional information gathered after final
printing.
My deepest appreciation
to those who have contributed or helped in any way. My special thanks to
Lewis Parsly who contributed the Oak Ridge Cemeteries. They were
recorded by himself, his late wife, Marjorie, his son James and others.
Also Oscar Phillips, who recorded some of the Phillips Cemeteries
located in remote areas of the New River section.
Juanita Crosby, Destile
Holder and Barbara Blankenship have also contributed. Juanita recorded
the Andersonville Cemetery and was a great help in the Andersonville
area. Destile recorded the Foust-1 Cemetery and helped locate others.
Barbara contributed the Reeves-Daugherty and Patterson-6 Cemeteries.

links are presently online. Those that do not have active links (ie are
not underlined) will be put online soon.
