EARLTON CEMETERY

 

EARLTON, NEOSHO COUNTY, KANSAS

 

 

EARLTON CEMETERY is located one-quarter mile east and three-quarters mile north of Earlton, Kansas.  It is in Canville Township of Neosho County, KS.  From Chanute, it lies about four miles south, one-half mile west and three-quarters mile north.  Earlton Cemetery was updated by Diana Shearin eddshearin@terraworld.net and Jarold Henry in 2003. 

 

The first Earlton cemetery was located 3 miles south, 1 mile west, then ˝ mile south on the west side of the road.  In 1881, the Earleton Cemetery was named “Earleton Cemetery Association” and was located directly north of the town of Earleton, Neosho Co. KS.  Lots were sold for $.50 to start the Association.  In 1883 lot prices were raised to $3.00.  The five board members were:  C.P. Vanderveer, President; J.C. Freeman, Secretary; A.F. Anderson, Treasurer and members John Clemens and James Rae.

 

In 1885, Mr. VanAllen sold five acres northeast of town to move the cemetery out of Earleton.  The Association voted, on Feb. 2, 1889, to turn the cemetery over to the township of Canville.  On Feb. 7, 1889 Earleton's name was spelled Earlton in the Cemetery records.
