Welcome to the Placer County
California
Genealogy Home Page

Formed April 25, 1851. Placer County is probably a contraction of the words "place de oro" (the place of gold) which in Spanish means "a place near the river where gold is found." It also could have been derived from the numerous places where "placer mining" was practiced, a method of extracting gold from the earth. The county seat is Auburn.
