Prescott County was established in 1800 from Glengarry County. It was named for Canada's Governor-in-Chief, Lieutenant-General Robert Prescott.
"Although close to Ottawa the county was slow in settlement"2 mostly due to lack of a main road. In the 1850's French Canadian's began settling in the county.
"Population 10,487 in 1852 and 52,201 in 1980."3
