NLGenWeb Frequently Asked Questions

How does one access the information from the Provincial Archives?

Some of the  information below was gleaned from the NF&L Government webpage by Stephen Baker.

The Provincial Archives Division of the Government of Newfoundland
and Labrador is responsible for
"Acquiring, preserving, organizing and making available records from both government and non-government sources. Developing a genealogical resource for the enhancement of the province's tourism potential. Creating an outreach unit to support the development of a consciousness of Newfoundland and Labrador's heritage including support for the development of heritage exhibits. "
It is believed that you must register with them to make use of their services and that this registration fee costs $10. It is also believed that each query you have them do from their pre 1892 archives, must be accompanied with a cheque for $10, regardless of the outcome of the search. If a record is found, then it will be sent to you. To obtain a certified copy of this record, will cost you another $15. When requesting a record search be sure to send them the full name of the person you are seeking, as well as the approximate date of the baptism record, marriage record or burial record. It is also absolutely essential that you provide the place of residence and the religious affiliation of the person you are seeking.
