GENERAL MEETINGTopic: British Naming Patterns: Fact or Fiction? This presentation shows how he was able to advance his family tree using naming patterns and describes the search for his ancestors in Lincolnshire and Northamptonshire. Speaker: Ivan C. Johnson was born in rural Lincolnshire, England, where most of his genealogical research is centered. He and his wife, Gail, have been actively engaged in genealogical research for many years and have given talks all over Southern California and New Zealand. Their presentations are illustrated with photographs taken by Gail on trips to the areas of their research. Ivan is a founding member and current President of the British Isles Family History Society - U. S. A. He is a professor emeritus of Cal State Northridge where he taught economics for 30 years. |

ENGLISH STUDY GROUP Topic: Expecting the Unexpected. The Art of an Open Mind and Sheer Tenacity in tracing English Ancestors using less used English resources and methods. Items we'll explore: selected online resources, FHL gems and County Record Office search requests – sources such as A2a and (British) National Archives “Documents Online,” Multimap.com, Stirnet.com, Free BMD Search, Victorian County Histories, etc; Parish Chest items and tax lists from FHL; burials reconsidered; Land records for rich, poor, farmers and merchants; analyzing existing pedigrees, ordering research in England. Leader: Peggy Wishon, a part-time professional genealogist for the past ten years, has been doing English and American research since 1986 when she discovered her LDS neighbor with family group sheets spread all over her living room – and Peggy was instantly addicted. She has taken classes, attended seminars, read much and experimented a whole lot, and says she is at home with the ordinary sources, but finds expanding into “untried” sources and methods, plus adding details to the lives of ancestors to be just plain fun. |

General meeting. Topic: Titanic
Connections From Southampton, Hampshire, England
The presentation will focus on the effects of this tragedy in the lives of the people of Southampton; and how significant events in history inspire and help people from around to world to connect and persue their own research in to their families histories. This event has already opened numerous doors to the speaker because of her personal connection to the Titanic tragedy. Speaker: Jill Kirby was born in Southampton, Hampshire, England. Jill still considers this to be "home" and loves to return to explore the history of this lovely city. Jill is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints. Jill is also a long time member of this Society and often regrets not having more hours in the day to persue the fascinating search of her family. Not content with books and films and the internet, Jill has traveled far and wide to persue her ancestors; this has given her great insight in to their lives and living conditions and a real feel for who they are as part of what she has become. From England and Ireland to Scotland to France to New Zealand to South Africa to Mauritius; Jill has found numerous treasures of information and has, had great adventures along the way. Of course to do this Jill has to work; she is self employed in the Medical field and loves her work almost as much as her research. Jill has many hobbies and when time permits loves to knit and sew, collects stamps and enjoys meeting people all over the globe. She also sends herself postcards from wherever she travels. |

Your Ancestors' Handwriting Tells on Them
Speaker: Sheila Lowe Your ancestors' handwriting reveals them in a way no photograph can. Like body language, tone of voice and facial expression, handwriting is an expressive gesture that reveals the writer's personality as it was in the moment he or she put pen to paper. Learning some of the basic principles of handwriting analysis can help you detect many important personality strengths and weaknesses. Internationally recognized handwriting expert, Sheila Lowe, will guide you through this fascinating journey into the hearts and minds of your forbears through their handwriting. To make this talk a real success, we need members to send in clear photocopies of their ancestors' handwriting. A lone signature isn't enough to get a good reading. Sheila needs a paragraph or so.
