British Isles Family History Society – U.S.A.Introduction to the Los Angeles Regional Family History Center |
The Los Angeles Regional Family History Center (LARFHC) began operation in June 1964 under the direction of E. Kay Kirkham. The size, facilities, and research materials have grown and expanded remarkably over the years. The Los Angeles Regional Family History Center holds over 125,000 microfilms, 100,000 microfiche and 40,000 books. The Center has 21 computer systems on a network server that contain the FamilySearch® program; 100 microfilm and 16 microfiche reading machines; four microfilm printers; two microfiche printers; and three copy machines for use by researchers. The Los Angeles Regional Family History Center has a particularly strong U.S. research collection and a strong British Isles Research Collection. About 60,000 researchers use the Family History Center each year. Many free research classes are taught each month on a variety of countries and topics, and printed schedules are available for upcoming classes. More than 70,000 people have attended these classes since they were started in 1984.
Volunteers staff the Los Angeles Regional Family History Center. There are no professional librarians, but research consultants are often available. The facility is open to the public at no charge.
The Official LARFHC website includes class schedules and other information. There is also an unofficial website maintained by Jon Schweitzer (As of April 2005, Jon Schweitzer is also the webmaster for the official LARFHC website, and is adding new content such as online inventories of local holdings.)
If you are not in the Los Angeles area, you can order LDS Family History Library film and fiche on interlibrary loan for a small charge at your local Family History Center.
