VAFHO is an umbrella organisation of family history and genealogical societies, together with State government instrumentalities. It was formed at a meeting held at the Second State Family History Conference in Maryborough in November 1996. The inaugural President was Mrs Frances Brown, then Genealogy and Local History Librarian of the State Library of Victoria, Australia.


Some of the aims of VAFHO

* To promote and encourage the study of genealogy, heraldry, family history and allied subjects throughout Victoria.

* To promote and arrange for easier access by the public to public records and record repositories throughout Victoria.

* To co-ordinate the conduct of regular family history conferences in Victoria by its members.

* To arrange the Don Grant Family History Lecture

Since the inaugural meeting in November 1996, VAFHO has conducted several Victorian State conferences and also the Annual Don Grant Family History Lecture.

The Third Victorian Family History State Conference was held in Melbourne in May 1999 and was organised by a committee of representatives of the Australian Institute of Genealogical Studies Inc. (AIGS), the Genealogical Society of Victoria Inc. (GSV) and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS). It was opened by the Governor, Sir James Gobbo, and was a tremendous success.

The Fourth Victorian Family History State Conference was organised by the Wodonga Family History Society Inc. with the support of VAFHO. This was held at Albury in April 2001 and was an outstanding success. The key-note speaker was Michael Gandy, BA, FSG, from London. Photos.


Don Grant Lectures

The Don Grant Lectures were named in honour of Don Grant, joint convenor of the Australian Institute of Genealogical Studies in 1973 and Past President of AIGS. Don was officer-in-charge of the City Search Room of the Public Records Office of Victoria, helping family historians with their research for many years.

Speakers at these lectures have been:

1997 - Ross Gibbs, Director of Public Record Office of Victoria.

1998 - Fran Awcock - CEO and State Librarian of the State Library of Victoria.

1999 - Ken Shewan of the Shiplovers’ Society, which was founded in 1930.

2000 - Sue McBeth - long time researcher in Victoria.

2001 - Michael Gandy - BA, FSG, from London.

2002 - Susie Zada - local and family historian for the Bellarine area.

2003 - Anne-Marie Schwirtlich - CEO and State Librarian of the State Library of Victoria.

2004 - Shauna Hicks - Senior Manager, Access Services, Public Record Office Victoria

The VAFHO Committee
