ASGS Research Services

The Arizona State Genealogical Society offers an Introductory Search to researchers who are new to genealogy or new to Arizona sources. If you are not familiar with the sources available in Pima and some surrounding counties, the following information may answer your question or at least get you started in your Arizona research.

Please note that our area of research is Pima County and, to a limited degree, some counties in Southern Arizona. See the Arizona Research Sources webpage for resources in other Arizona counties.

Introductory Search

We suggest you send us the full name of your subject, as much information about places and dates as you know, and the specific question(s) you wish us to research. We will examine the following sources for you:

1. Arizona Cemetery Records (formerly Arizona Death Records)
2. Arizona Territorial Marriages, Pima County, 1871-1912 and Pima County, Arizona, Marriage Records, Feb 1912 - Dec. 1926
3. 1880 and 1900 federal censuses of Pima County, Arizona
4. St. Mary's Hospital Register Index, 1880-1907 and St. Mary's Hospital Register, 1909-1916
5. Pioneer Names of Pima County, AZ 1864-1912 (names in court records)
6. Tucson city directories: 1881, 1897-1966
7. Tucson telephone directories (white pages): 1916-1990
8. Arizona Daily Star (Tucson) obituaries, 1877 to present (full name and exact date of death required)
9. ASGS Members' Surname Index, 1994
10. Jewish Graves in Southern Arizona Cemeteries

A non-refundable donation to the society of $15.00 for each surname is requested, as well as a SASE (or loose stamps).  Please allow us two months to complete your research.

Vital Records

Arizona birth records older than 75 years and death records older than 50 years are available from the Family History Library on microfilm, or we will obtain them for you for the above $15.00 fee. You may also contact the Arizona State Archives in Phoenix for these records, or you may obtain them from the Arizona Department of Health Services genealogy web site.  The web site contains approximately 85% of the birth and death records available to the public. Early territorial records started about 1890, but are incomplete prior to 1912.

Birth records less than 75 years old and death records less then 50 years old are closed to the public by law in Arizona. If you are searching for a relative in your direct line from one of these time periods, we will send you an application form, with instructions for its completion, on request. Please enclose a SASE.

We will search Arizona Territorial Marriages, Pima County 1871-1912; Pima County marriage Feb 1912-Dec 1926; Navajo County 1895-1912; Yuma County 1864-1912.
