in donations for the courthouse books.
Other good news - The
Society has received word that they will have the use of a county-owned
building in September for a museum. The books will have a home.
We will have some remodeling to do so will need everyone's support.
The physical address is 711 E Union, next door to the courthouse.
The Society's mailing address is P.O. Box 943, Wynne, AR 72396.
------
The Society will have their 3rd meeting
this coming Tues., Aug 9th @ the 1st Methodist Church on Falls Blvd
in Wynne, 7 p.m. Membership in the Society is $15 per individual,
$25 family.
Also, as recently posted
on the Cross County board on Rootsweb:
"The Cross County Historical
Society is seeking donations to cover the cost of purchasing 29
old Cross Co. Courthouse books. The books were sold at the estate
sale of Thomas Baker for $3,223.00.
Mr. Thomas rescued these books from
a dumpster in the 1960's when the old courthouse was torn down.
There are several more books in the possession of individuals. One
person contacted has offered to donate one of these to the Cross
Co. Historical Society.
The books date from the 1860's when
court was held at Wittsburg to the 1920's. One of the books includes
the inventory & appraisement of Col. David C Cross' estate.
Another book lists land sold in 1865 for non-payment of taxes. This
was the year the Civil War ended so provides information as to who
was in Cross Co. during the Civil War.
Anyone wishing to donate please send
a check payable to:
Cross Co. Historical Society
PO Box 943
Wynne, AR 72396.
The society is a non-profit organization
so your donation will be tax-deductible."
