Thomas Henry Nettles was born in Chesterfield District, SC on June 30, 1832. He later moved with his parents Samuel Henry Nettles and Mary Martha Owen Nettles to Germany, Monroe County, Alabama (now known as Buena Vista). His was a farmer.  He married Judah Ann Rikard on June 13, 1857.  They had two children, Samuel and Hennie Nettles.

Thomas Henry Nettles enlisted on March 17, 1862 in Company G, 36th Alabama Infantry.   At the time of his enlistment he was 29 years old ( two weeks before his 30th birthday) and described as being 5’ 10” in height, fair complexion, blue eyes, and light hair.  He was promoted to 1st Corporal on December 1, 1862, promoted to 4th Sergeant on March 1, 1863 and promoted to 2nd Sergeant on November 1, 1863. Sergeant Nettles was captured at Nashville in 1864 and taken to Camp Chase Ohio.  On March 25, 1865, shortly before the end of the War, he died at Camp Chase while imprisoned.  The cause of his death was starvation.  This is attributed to the improper inhumane treatment he received as result of the Secretary of War’s directive to northern prison authorities to reduce food, fuel, clothing and shelter of all Confederate prisoners.

A runner was sent to tell his family of his death.  Judah Rikard Nettles lost her husband and all five of her brothers in the War.  She received a small Confederate Widows pension in 1913 from the State of Alabama.

Sergeant Thomas Henry Nettles rests in grave number 1569, grave position 21, row 34 in the Camp Chase Cemetery in Columbus, Ohio.
