Formed from portions of Calhoun, Randolph, and Talladega Counties, Cleburne County was created by an act of the Alabama Legislature in 1866. The county was named for Major General Patrick R. Cleburne. The county seat was established at Edwardsville, but moved to Heflin in 1906.
The western portion of the county is part of the Talladega National Forest.

The Alabama Room of the Anniston-Calhoun County Public Library contains local history and genealogical records of Cleburne County as well as Calhoun, Clay, Randolph, and Talladega counties.
The AlaBenton Genealogical Society meets in the Ayers Room of the Anniston-Calhoun County Public Library.
