Resort Course Draw Enthusiastis from West and U.A.
ILLUSTRATIONS
-
Mr. Donald Cameron, school registrar, stated Monday that this year the school was willing to accept students who were unable to attend the first two weeks of the summer course as partial students with partial fees. These may register any time within the first two weeks and get as much as possible out of the remainder of the course. Master classes in piano are being held under the guidance of Mr. Kihl in the United church hall. This is a new department for the school and judging by the interest shown will prove a very popular one.
Monday evening a general meeting with an impromptu program was arranged in the gymnasium of the school for all members.
Mr. Kihl began his first lecture Monday afternoon with an attendance of twenty pupils. Miss Marryat acted as his assistant. The professor gave a fine summary, an introduction to music. He divided it into three periods from the third to thirteenth century, from the thirteenth to the seventeenth and from that period to the present time. Art he defined as a contribution of personal experience and said that to give an artistic performance the players must not only play the proper notes but must also understand the processes in the author’s mind.
Must understand Idea
To understand long complicated pieces of music the idea behind the music must be understood and by following through and perceiving small details thus get the whole design. Mr. Kihl illustrated his lecture with records of old Greek music and old Jewish music, comparing the two and illustrating many points in his lecture by himself playing illustrative bars.
Mr. Kihl was a pupil of the great Teicmuller
at the royal conservatory of Leipzig and is well known throughout the principal
countries of
