Judy's Two-Bits Worth
Judith Bradley

It's an exciting time to be a member of Grande Prairie and District Branch AGS. IT'S OUR 25TH YEAR. To help with the celebration we have an exciting line up of guest speakers for the program part of our meeting.

At our April meeting, we will be visited by Jerry Petrychyn. His topic is the emigration of many people from Ukraine and their settlement in Canada. Our May meeting will find us sharing our research trail. This will be a time for "newbies" to learn where they can go for help on their specific problem. It will also be a time for anyone to share knowledge gained at our AGS Conference that has aided in their research. June will find us hosting David Leonard as he talks about the homestead project. In September we will welcome Duff Crerar to speak on researching Scottish roots.

Our conference is fast approaching. Hopefully you got all the information in the February issue of Relatively Speaking. You are encouraged to attend. If you would like to attend and require car pool information, phone me and we will try to hook you up with someone.

Because it is no longer possible to have our meeting time in the library run past 9:00 p.m.

it has become necessary to begin our meetings at 7:00 p.m. sharp. We have been able to gain access to the meeting room at 6:30 p.m. and this should allow ample time for "visiting" so we can begin our meeting promptly at seven. Thank you for your help in this matter.

Finally, our society exists for you. Without your input it cannot be the best it can be. Be it helping set out tables and chairs for our meetings, writing an article for Heritage Seekers, helping with fundraising, or helping with other "genealogical" projects you are vital to our organization. Help us make our branch the best it can be.

Fund A Film

The Grande Prairie and District Branch is working towards the purchase of the 1871 Canadian Census on microfilm. The census consist of 294 films and cost $40.00 per film. A BIG COMMITMENT!

Our fundraiser for this year is simple. Fund a Film. We can receive a matching grant for any money raised for this project. This means that with every $20.00 raised we are able to apply $20.00 matching grant. Now we have the $40.00 needed for another reel of 1871 census. What could be simpler! It is the perfect fundraiser for those that do not have the time to commit

to fundraising, but are wishing to help raise money for this worthy project.

Receipts for income tax are available upon request.

So the next time you are at the library, pick up a "FUND A FILM" form.

Whatever Happened to Hannah and John?
Judith Bradley

Hannah GATES was about 16 years old when she married John HARRISON around 1846. John had a 111 acre farm near Mimico on Lot 6 Concession 2 in Etobicke Township, York, Ontario. Here they raised their ten children - 5 boys and 5 girls: Lydia, Robert, Huldah, John, Mary Hannah, Sophia Jane, Nelson, George, Jonathan R. and Martha. Very little is known about John HARRISON. He was born in Ireland about 1819. It is believed he came from County Tyrone. We know a little more about Hannah's beginnings.

Hannah's father was Jonathan GATES. Jonathan GATES had come to Scarborough about 1815 to settle on Lot 19 and 20, Concession C. He eventually built an Inn known as Scarboro Inn or Gates Tavern. He married Hannah CORNELL before 1818. Hannah gave Jonathan six children: Nelson, Charles, John, Rossel, Jonathan and Annie. Hannah died 1 June, 1827 aged 30 years. On 24 August, 1829 he married Lydia STEPHENS. Lydia was just 18 years when taking his six children under her wing she became mother to the large brood. It was not long before Lydia was to become a mother in her own right. Hannah GATES was born about 1830. Lydia died in 1834 and Jonathan once again found himself looking for a mother for his growing family. Hulda SILVER became Mrs. Gates #3.

Jonathan was very prosperous. In 1849 William Brown, an Englishmen, described Jonathan's farm in his book, "Four Years in the United States and Canada".

"One of the best farms to be seen in his neighbourhood is in the township of Scarborough, belonging to Mr. Gates. He keeps a splendid tavern just ten miles from the City Hall, upon the plank road in Kingston Street, and his house is surrounded on both sides of the street with his farm, which contains about three hundred acres, some of which extends to the borders of the lake.

He takes care that every portion of it is well manured, having a large supply made in his stables, and he grows everything upon his own farm that is consumed in his house except groceries. He catches as much fish as serves his table all the year round, and makes as much sugar from his own maple grove as he wants, and kills his own mutton, beef and pork."

By the time of Jonathan's death in January 1853, he owned ample property to leave his five sons Nelson, Charles, John, Roswell (Rossell), Jonathan and daughter Annie property. In addition to his home farm was property elsewhere in Scarborough Township, Whitby Township, Pickering Township, Vaughn Township, Toronto and Town of Bronte in Haldimand. Curiously, Hannah was crossed off the will. Was it because she had received her share earlier? Perhaps the land farmed by her husband in Etobicoke had been such a gift.

In 1993, the steeply sloping ravine that cuts through the Scarborough Bluffs on its way to Lake Ontario became formally named Gates Gulley. A full 140 years after Jonathan's death.

The family of Hannah GATES and John HARRISON grew up and one by one they took on lives of their own. Robert married Louise McCARTY and their daughter was born in Napenee, Ontario in 1881. Lydia married Charles NORTHCOTE, who farmed near Mimico, and raised a large family of ten. Sophia Jane married Charles Edward GILES, a mariner from nearby Port Credit. Three of their sons emigrated to the United States - Chicago to be exact. John Jr. in 1882, Jonathan R. in 1885, and Nelson in 1886. John Jr. had married Bridget Anna O'LEARY at Toronto in 1875. Mary Hannah married John Henry HARVEY in 1881 at Emsdale, Muskoka Territory. It is known that the HARVEYs traveled to Chicago at least twice as their daughters were born there. Were Mary Hannah's parents in Chicago? Had they moved to the Muskoka region? All of the HARVEY boys were born in the Muskokas. (Nelson {who died in childhood}, Edith Agnes 1886, Mary Delia Eva 1888, John George 1891, Alexander Russell 1893, and Johnathan Henry 1895) We are told John Henry HARVEY died shortly after his son Johnathan Henry's birth leaving Mary Hannah a widow with five young children. She kept her two youngest children with her while the older three were sent to live with their paternal grandparents at Kerney, Muskoka. Mary Hannah was able to support herself as a housekeeper in the Turner home. In April of 1901 Mary Hannah wed Henry TURNER who was a widower. He farmed in McMurrich Township, Muskoka. On January 16 1902 Mary Hannah HARRISON died.

The search for Hannah GATES and John HARRISON continues. Where did they go? What became of them? Perhaps in tracing the lives of their children, be it near Mimico, in Muskoka, or in Chicago, I will discover something about them. I will probably meet a cousin or two. I hope so.

Our Future/Our Past:
The Alberta Heritage Digitization Project
University of Calgary

Our Future/Our Past: The Alberta Heritage Digitization Project brings to life a range of Alberta's historical records, which reflect the breadth and depth of our heritage. Alberta's diverse landscapes, resources and populace have all contributed to the province's rich history and ever-evolving character. Now a record of Alberta's history is being made available to students of history everywhere via the World Wide Web. Following are some of the types of material you will find on the Our Future/Our Past web site.

. Alberta Folklore features tales of fur trading, crime and criminals, politics, the unusual, the customary, and much more. This material is provided by the University of Alberta, which is home to the largest folklore collection in Western Canada.

. Alberta Homestead Files contain vital information about the first European settlers in the province. The Provincial Archives house 4380 reels of microfilmed homestead files.

. Rare Western Canadian Maps, such as Peace River Country Showing Trails and Settlements created by the Canadian Northern Railway Company, provide insight into early Alberta. The Glenbow Museum is contributing 100 rare maps to the collection.

. Western Canadian Art from The Nickle Arts Museum collection highlights artists who have set trends in Western Canadian artistic traditions.

. Senior Canadian architect's drawings, such as those by Thomas Mawson, whose innovative city plans were only recently rediscovered, are provided by the U of C's Canadian Architectural Archives.

. Alberta Newspapers, such as Bob Edward's Eye Opener, will help to place Alberta's history in the context of world history. The Provincial Archives' Southern Alberta Newspaper Index will also be placed online.

. Local histories, such as Glimpses of the Past 1894-1994 produced by the Hainstock Centennial History Book Association, will heighten awareness of the many Alberta local histories available today.

. 200,000 Aerial Images from the U of C's Aerial Photography Project capture Alberta terrain and land use from 1922 to 1945. The oldest aerial imagery for the province includes the prisoner-of-war camp location at Seebee, the Frank Slide, and the placement of the Armed Forces firing ranges within the lands returned to the Tsuu T'ina nation.

Provision and Preservation

Our Future/Our Past provides universal access via the World Wide Web to unique primary and secondary materials about the cultural and social heritage of Alberta and Western Canada.

Digitizing these resources preserves aging materials in a format that allows them to be consulted for generations to come. The materials will be used by school children, genealogists, writers, the public, and academic researchers across the world.

Through access to local histories and local newspapers, interested participants will gain insight into the challenges and routines of daily life in Alberta from the 1890s to the 1950s. Links among artistic, literary and architectural archival materials will create awareness of the richness of the artistic heritage of Western Canada. This contextual analysis will provide a foundation for research by students at all levels.

Through the Alberta Heritage Digitization Project, you will:

The creation of a digital archive of Alberta heritage materials will not only provide an ongoing

resource for the people of Canada and the world, but will also preserve these materials for future generations. It is expected that the availability of this wealth of research material will herald a new interest in Alberta history at all levels and a celebration of our rich past.

Our prototype, demonstrating the range of historical materials that will be found in Our Future/Our Past is available at http://ahdp.lib.ucalgary.ca/

Our Future/Our Past: The Alberta Heritage Digitization Project has received funding from The Millennium Bureau of Canada, Canada's Digital Collections, Alberta Historical Resources Foundation, the Alberta Knowledge Network and the University of Calgary.

This project was made possible through the partnership of the University of Calgary Library, the University of Alberta Library, the Provincial Archives of Alberta, the Glenbow Museum, and the Nickle Arts Museum.

Grande Prairie Library Joins Our Future/Our Past

The Grande Prairie Public Library is joining with The University of Calgary and its partners to implement phase two of Our Future/Our Past: The Alberta Heritage Digitization Project. In 1999, the University of Calgary created an innovative consortium to bring to life the historical records of Alberta. These records include newspapers, folklore, homestead files, maps, architectural drawings, local histories and aerial photographs. These records, previously unavailable or available only in single locations, are being digitized and made available to schools, libraries, communities, and volunteer organizations for life-long learning via the World Wide Web. The integration of a variety of types and formats of materials makes this project unique and increases its value to researchers at all levels.

The Grande Prairie Public Library will make available 1200 photographs from the Isabel Campbell photograph collection as well as the first year of the Grande Prairie Herald Tribune newspaper. It is the plan to digitize all of the papers from 1913-1950 but for this first project priority is to mount the photographs first and then start on the newspapers.

Web Site

The following was first seen on the Devon rootsweb list. Hugh Wallis gets a huge thank you for making his hard work available to everyone.

Have you been frustrated searching the IGI for your rellies when you have only the surname but got tired of figuring out batch numbers and typing them into the LDS search screen (since you can't do a last name search unless you know a batch number)?

I have been - so I decided to do something about it. I have made an exhaustive search of the likely ranges of batch numbers for the British Isles and created a database of those numbers and the source records that they apply to. I have searched all the possible numbers in the ranges shown on my website. For each batch I extracted the church or chapel (if specified), town, county and country names of the first record that appears when it is called up in my browser. I then organized them by country and county and created a website. A very powerful feature that I have included is a hotlink from each batch number to the actual search engine provided at http://www.familysearch.org including the ability to enter the surname you are looking for. This makes it very easy to search all the batches for a particular geographic location using just the last name you are searching for - something that is not possible directly from the LDS site without doing a lot of typing. You lucky Devon listeners are the first to hear about this - I hope you will like it - please let me know if you have any suggestions for improvements, enhancements, or new features that I might be able to implement. The site is at:

1901 Scottish Census Records Are Now Online

-- Dick Eastman

The following is a press release from Origins.net:

1901 Census

The Scots got it right!

The 1901 Scottish census launched without problems on 24 January 2002. The General Register Office for Scotland contracted Origins.net, the company who pioneered this type of service, and so therefore knew better than anyone how to avoid the problems that the PRO has encountered.

Scots Origins traffic has also gone up by an order of magnitude, but users are "amazed at the speed of dowloads." One of our users has alerted us to the discussions on soc.gen.brit about the 1901 census on the PRO site and sates that the general consensus is: "... the PRO in England and Qinetiq, the company they contracted to put the Englishcensus online could definitely learn a lot from your excellent workÖ maybe you guys should make the PRO an offer!"

Since 1998, Origins.net has been home to Scots Origins, providing exclusive online access to the General RegisterOffice for Scotland's birth and marriage records from 1553-1900, death records for 1855 to 1925, and the 1881, 1891, and now, 1901 census records. Early 2001 saw the launch of English Origins, with Origins.net working alongside theSociety of Genealogists to provide access to key English records. (Please see site for cost and navigation information.)
